Safety Failures Lead to Court
His Honour Judge Elwen at Truro Crown Court sentenced George Pill Sr., 61, to six months jail for each of the two offenses he plead guilty to and costs of £8,500. On the 22nd August 2008 a Surveyor from the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) was conducting an audit on the small Class V passenger vessel, the Haven Rose in the port of Falmouth. It became apparent that the vessels liferaft was overdue for servicing and the hydrostatic release unit (HRU) was past its expiry date. The Surveyor found the serial number of the liferaft had been obliterated and servicing data was attached to the label using yellow embossed Dymo tape instead of the normal black printed lettering on white tape. Further enquiries showed that the liferaft should have been serviced in December 2007.
Dangerous Fakes of Hammar H20
CM Hammar, of Göteborg, Sweden announced that fake copies of their Hydrostatic Release Unit, the Hammar H20, are being produced, posing a serious safety hazard. The copy is almost identical to the original product, with Hammar’s logo and address on the labels, however, the fake does not work. Hammar tested several of the copies. Not one of them worked properly according to SOLAS’ specification. The fake H20 will not release a life raft or an Epirb. Hammar stated that they see this as a very serious situation. There could be a number of ships at sea that are sailing with fake Hydrostatic Release Units. If any of these ships were to sink, there will be no life rafts or Epirbs to help to rescue the seafarers in danger.
Hammar Introduces Hydrostatic Release Unit
The Hydrostatic Release Unit from Sweden is found life rafts and EPIRBs of all sizes and on all types of ships around the world. The new Hydrostatic Release Unit, with the same name as its predecessor H20, has been introduced. The H20 is designed for easier installation. It has a 3-step coupling device that eliminates the risk of incorrect installation. The Weak Linkä of Hammar is now integrated into a new black thimble. This gives smaller tolerances in the Weak Linkä system (breaking strength 2,2 +/- 0,4 kN) as well as a stronger lower thimble construction. For the end user, the new design will be noticed in first place by the clear and easy-to-understand installation.
