QatarEnergy to Charter 19 New LNG Carriers

QatarEnergy CEO Saad Al Kaabi announced on Sunday that the company has finalised a number of charter contracts with several Asian ship owners to bolster its shipping fleet by 19 LNG vessels ahead of a massive expansion in LNG output.In a ceremony at its Doha headquarters state-owned QatarEnergy signed contracts to charter six vessels from CMES LNG Carrier Investment, six vessels from Shandong Marine Energy and three vessels from MISC Berhad. Seaspan Enters Car Carrier Segment in Order with Glovis

Containerships owner/operator Seaspan Corporation signaled its entry into the car carrier segment in confirming a deal to order a series of new pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) in partnership with Hyundai Glovis (Glovis).The 10,800 CEU are the largest PCTCs under development to date. They will be dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as ammonia-and methanol-ready.Seaspan said it negotiated the purchase from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a China State Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard.

Norway Wealth Fund Revises Ship Scrapping Status of Two Companies

Norway sovereign wealth fund said on Tuesday it revoked the exclusion of Thoresen Thai Agencies from its investments, and ended observation of Hyundai Glovis Co.It had previously excluded one and put another company on observation due to their practice of sending decommissioned vessels to be broken up for scrap in Bangladesh and Pakistan where working conditions were "extremely poor," according to the fund.Thoresen Thai Agencies has not sent any more vessels to Bangladesh since 2018, while Hyundai Glovis established a new policy for responsible disposal of decommissioned vessels, it added in a

DNV Awards AiP to HD KSOE’s Hydrogen System for LH2 Carrier

DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and its subsidiaries HD Hyundai Heavy Industry (HD HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for their new hydrogen system.HD KSOE aims to complete the development of the hydrogen carrier technology that enables large-capacity hydrogen transportation and storage by around 2030.HD KSOE's new system utilizes boil-off gas from hydrogen transport for a hybrid propulsion system, integrating hydrogen dual-fuel engines and fuel cells.

First Large Commercial Hydrogen Carrier Developed

Flex LNG Sells Vessels in $420mln Deal

John Fredriksen-affiliated Flex LNG announced that it has entered into a sale-charter-back transaction with Hyundai Glovis for the vessels Flex Endeavour and Flex Enterprise.The shipping company focuses on the growing market for transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG), said that under the agreement, Flex LNG will sell the vessels for a gross consideration of $420m, with a net consideration of $300m adjusted for a non-amortizing and  non-interest bearing seller's credit of $120m in total. Flex Endeavour and Flex Enterprise will be charted back on a time-charter basis to subsidiaries of Flex LNG for a period of ten years.The Company will have  options to acquire the vessels during the term of the time-charters.

Oman Shipping Company (OSC) is reporting strong performance in domestic markets following long-term deals with local refineries and traders including ORPIC and OTI.OSC’s growth in the region is being driven by a 20-year contract to transport condensate for ORPIC (Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company) and a 15-year deal transporting methanol for OTI (Oman Trading International) from Salalah Methanol plant.The company is further supporting the export of LPG from Sohar Refinery to Yemen, Sudan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Wilhelmsen Group Income for 2Q up by 5%

The Wilhelmsen group delivers a slight increase in top line in the second quarter, mainly supported by higher operating revenue in supply services. The positive underlying market trends are expected to continue. The total income for the second quarter was USD 222 million, up 5% from the first three months of 2018.“We note that the positive development in top line in the first quarter continues into the second. Maritime services deliver stable revenue, while supply services record improved income following a seasonal upswing and property sales gains in NorSea Group,” says Thomas Wilhelmsen, group CEO at Wilhelmsen.EBITDA was nil for the quarter.

Hyundai Glovis Bags $1.3bln Contract

Hyundai Glovis, a logistics company headquartered in Seoul and part of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, has secured 1.42 trillion won (US$1.3 billion) in orders to ship vehicles, said a report in RTT News. The auto freight unit of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group quoted as saying that the orders are to ship vehicles built by Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. The report said that, under the two separate deals, Hyundai Glovis said it is set to ship Hyundai and Kia cars to the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia until December 2019. The two deals cover up to 60 percent of Hyundai and Kia's exports, respectively. Last year, Hyundai Glovis signed a share purchase agreement with Eusu Ship Management Co., Ltd.

Hyundai Merchant Heading for Bankruptcy ?

A bankruptcy of Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) would become the biggest ever in the shipping sector, and the creditors seem on the way to taking over control with the shipping group. Without further government support, bankruptcy is growing closer for Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) after the company's bondholders rejected the company's proposed debt rescheduling plan, says Alphaliner. "The potential bankruptcy of the financially troubled South Korean carrier would be the largest-ever in container shipping. Based on the total vessel container capacity operated by the respective insolvent carriers, a failure of HMM would dwarf all previous bankruptcies in this sector," said Alphaliner, noting that the company's survival seems to depend on a government bail out.

Global Ocean Trade Shipbuilding Orders

Another relatively quiet week with no reports of new shipbuilding orders in either the dry bulk and tankship markets, remarks Clarkson Hellas in its latest S&P Weekly Bulletiln. Odfjell Gas Carriers declared their options for four 22,000 CBM LPG/Ethylene Carriers at Sinopacific Offshore for deliveries in 2016 and 2017. Clarkson Hellas explain that these are the options from four 17,000 CBM LPG/Ethylene Carriers which were contracted last year for deliveries throughout 2015 and 2016. Clients of Schulte Group are understood to have increased their series of 2,350 TEU Containers at Zhejiang Yangfan to sixteen vessels by declaring four options. Delivery of the optional vessels is planned within 2016.

Expanded World Maritime University Campus Inaugurated

Expanded premises for the World Maritime University (WMU) were inaugurated on Monday, May 19, 2015 in Malmö, Sweden, by IMO Secretary-General and WMU Chancellor Koji Sekimizu. WMU is an international educational institute for the maritime community, operating under the auspices of IMO. At close to 6,000m2, WMU’s new facility is nearly double the size of the previous Malmö campus. It provides a new auditorium, multiple research laboratories, seminar rooms and video-conferencing capabilities for hosting international conferences.

Car Carrying Volumes Boost WWH Revenues in Q4 2013

“Shipping volumes increased in the fourth quarter. As expected, car volumes improved more than high and heavy volumes," stated Thomas Wilhelmsen, group WWH CEO. Operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2013 was USD 82 million (USD 96 million) based on a total income of USD 893 million (USD 903 million). The operating profit for the quarter was negatively impacted by an accrual related to a draft cease and desist order which the partly owned Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA (WWASA) company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) received in January 2014 (WWASA’s accrued share is USD 16.5 million).

Wilh.Willhelmsen Holdings Report 2013 Profit Slide

The Directors' report 2013 (extracted here) states that shipowners & technical services firm Wilh. Wilhelmsen Holding group (WWH) delivered lower results for 2013 when compared with a very strong 2012. The fallback in results was due to a 7% reduction in shipping volumes and substantial sales gains impacting previous year accounts. The accounts show that operating profit slipped from $562-million in 2012 to $325-million in 2013. Wilh. Experienced lower demand for transportation of high and heavy cargoes, while auto volumes for the year were stable.

Hyundai Glovis Signs $100m Qatari Shipping Deal

Hyundai Glovis Co., South Korean shipping firm, clinched a $100 million shipping service contract with a building materials firm in Qatar, reports Yonhap news agency. According to the agreement signed with state-run Qatar Primary Materials Co., Hyundai will transport 12 million tons of aggregates to the Arab nation from neighboring United Arab Emirates for the next two years. The aggregates imported by the Qatari government are to be used in the construction of facilities for the 2022 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by the country. Kim Kyung-bae, chairman of Hyundai Glovis, the logistics unit under auto conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group, said that the a test deal will be a chance for his company to promote its competitiveness in the Middle Eastern logistics industry.
