Container Tracking System Installation Up 54 Percent in 2012
According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of active remote container tracking units deployed on intermodal shipping containers was 137,000 in Q4-2012, up from 89,000 a year earlier. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 49.1%, this number is expected to reach 1 million by 2017. The penetration rate of remote tracking systems in the total population of containers is estimated to increase from 0.7% in 2012 to 4.1% in 2017. Berg Insight’s definition of a real-time container tracking solution is a system that incorporates data logging, satellite positioning and data communication to a back-office application. The market for container tracking solutions is still in its early stage.

New U.S. Port IDs Cause Concerns i
As many as 1 million U.S. seaport and ship workers must undergo background checks and obtain biometric identification cards as part of a federal program aimed at improving maritime security, according to Reuters. The credentials will supplement, rather than replace, the security cards and clearances workers already must have, sowing doubts about the program among shipping companies and port operators, industry officials said at the Maritime Security Council's annual conference in Fort Lauderdale this week. Enrollment in the U.S. Transportation Worker Identification Credential program, called TWIC, is scheduled to open next week at the Port of Wilmington in Delaware and expand to all U.S. seaports by August 2008.
Leica Marine To Supply ID Systems For BP Tankers
Leica Marine GPS has received orders from Seacoast Electronics to supply automatic identification systems (AIS) for three new tankers under construction for British Petroleum at the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California. Each of the vessels will be fitted with an integrated DGPS/AIS system meeting the International Maritime Organization (IMO) carriage requirements for shipboard AIS. The AIS equipment will permit the ships to exchange vital identification and navigation data automatically with other AIS-equipped ships and coastal stations via VHF radio channels.
