Crowley Maritime Corporation’s 2016 Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships have helped to further educational opportunities for four students of State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. The recipients, who will each sail with Crowley this summer, were chosen based on their demonstrated leadership skills, financial need and plans to pursue a career in the towing or petroleum shipping industries after graduation. River cruise operator Viking Cruises is taking full advantage of an annual deck maintenance program offered by the Dutch company Bolidt Synthetic Products & Systems. A total of 32 vessels – more than half of the Viking Cruises fleet – will have their decking cleaned and renewed at various European ports this winter, with 18 vessels being refurbished in Cologne. Nine more will be refurbished in Vienna, while the remaining five river cruisers will have work carried out in the French ports of Bordeaux and Rouen, or Mainz and Duisburg in Germany, depending on their cruising itineraries.

The State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College announced Friday that two student cadets, Julia Paxton of Sebastopol, California, and Brandon Baranyar of Fairfield, Connecticut, have been selected as recipients of the 2014 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Paxton and Baranyar both are members of the College’s Regiment of Cadets, and both are scheduled to graduate from SUNY Maritime next week. In a ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center last month, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher honored the more than 300 college students from campuses throughout the state, presenting 274 SUNY students with the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, and 68 awards from Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society.

Damen Shipyards and Afai Southern Shipyard contracted to build 35 m ferry for Liuzhou Yinliu Hotel Management. Liuzhou Yinliu Hotel Management Co. Ltd. (China) has ordered a Damen Ferry 3508 with Afai Southern Shipyard (China). The DFe 3508 is a 35m Aluminium Luxury Sightseeing Ferry and is designated for the municipal government of Guangxi Liuzhou. As Liuzhou is the main business port of the Guangxi Zhuang region, the city will use the ferry for receiving both government and industry representatives for official meetings and sightseeing tours along the Liujiang River.

In reaction to the increasing commuter traffic on the Bosporus, the municipal ferry enterprise IDO in Istanbul has commissioned four doubleended ferries with two Voith Schneider Propellers each. The four ferries operate on the route between the European ferry terminal Sirkeci and the Asian terminal Harem. With the increased number of ferries on this route, the transport capacity was boosted from 2,500 vehicles to approx. 10,000 vehicles per day. The four double-ended ferries are equipped with a total of eight Voith Schneider Propellers of the type 18R5 EC/150-1.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been selected to supply electronic navigation systems for six new high-speed vessels under construction at Austal Shipyards in Henderson, Western Australia. The equipment is being supplied by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit through contracts awarded by Austal to Electrotech Australia, which is supplying and installing the complete navigation and communication package for the new vessels. The new ships include four high-speed wave-piercing catamaran ferries, two for the Sultanate of Oman and two for IDO Turkey, and two Armidale-Class patrol boats for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The EIB is lending Istanbul’s Ferry boat company (IDO) $60.84m to finance the purchase of two fast ferryboats – part of a comprehensive program, which aims to improve the cities hamstrung transport infrastructure. Both ferryboats are designed to carry some 1200 passengers and over 200 cars and will offer passengers maximum level of comfort and safety. Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city and center of one of the country’s leading industrial and economic regions. The two bridges crossing the Bosphorus have proven insufficient to move hundreds of thousands of daily commuters in a city of 12 million people. Using the ferry to cross the straits is an alternative way to avoid the clogged roads.

Austal announced that a contract for two high speed vehicle-passenger catamarans has been signed with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. This follows the submission of a fully compliant proposal with the lowest price offer in an international tender that began earlier this year. To be operated by Istanbul Deniz Otobusleri (IDO) the identical new ferries are scheduled for delivery in 2007 and have a capacity to carry 1,200 passengers and 225 cars or 126 lane metres of trucks plus 158 cars. The origins of Turkey’s large fast ferry fleet can be traced to 1987 when the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality founded IDO to develop sea transportation solutions and thus help ease growing traffic congestion.

Joining organizations around the world in aiding victims of the tragic earthquake in Turkey, Austal's two 282 ft. (86 m) and two 197 ft. (60 m) vessels, constructed for Istanbul Deniz Otobusleri (IDO), have been utilized to take relief workers and rescue vehicles from Istanbul to Yalova - as well as ferrying ambulances and injured persons back to Istanbul. Operating 24-hours a day, the vessels were an instrumental piece in the relief efforts for this tragedy.
