Ignazio Messina & C Adds Secondhand Containership to Its Fleet

Ignazio Messina & C announced it has taken delivery of a secondhand 4,400 TEU containership, now renamed Jolly Clivia.Built in 2010 at the South Korea's Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, the vessel measures 262 meters in length by 32 meters in width, and was previously owned by a German company.The ship will now set sail from Singapore toward Europe with scheduled calls at Mundra (India), Jebel Ali Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Karachi (Pakistan), and is expected to arrive in Genoa at the end of March.

Genoese group Ignazio Messina & Co.has been taken delivery of the container vessel Jolly Rosa. Flying the Italian flag and enrolled in the International Registry at the Genoa Port Authority, the ship measures 260 x 32m with a gross tonnage of 42,112 tonnes and a transport capacity of 4387 TEU containers, 360 of which are reefer. Under the command of Captain Simone Galli with a crew of 23 people, 13 of whom are Italian, 4 EU and 6 non-EU, she joins in the Messina fleet the Jolly Oro and the Jolly Argento which have been purchased and entered service for the group in recent months.

Italian Ship Owners Accused of Poor Shipbreaking Practices

Italian shipping companies Grimaldi Group, Ignazio Messina and Vittorio Bogazzi & Figli are facing strong criticism from the NGO Shipbreaking Platform for reported poor shipbreaking practices. The NGO Shipbreaking Platform, a global coalition of 19 environmental, human rights and labor rights organizations working to end polluting and dangerous shipbreaking, denounced the companies, calling upon them to take action to ensure the sustainable recycling of their end-of-life fleet. According to the group, Grimaldi Group, Ignazio Messina and Vittorio Bogazzi & Figli sell vessels to shipbreaking yards that do not respect basic human rights and environmental protection standards.

Kalmar RoRo forklifts for Messina Line

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has clinched a further order to supply seven new Kalmar DCE330-RORO units to the leading Italian shipping firm Messina Line (Ignazio Messina & C S.p.a). The expansion of Messina's fleet has been made in preparation for larger vessels soon coming to their terminal in Genoa, Italy. The order has been booked into Cargotec's first quarter intake, and scheduled for delivery in the second. The Kalmar DCE330-RORO possesses a 33-tonne lifting capacity, free lift mast up to three metres high and 360° visibility; and so is equally at home in the limited space on board ship as it is handling and stacking containers in the terminal yard.

German Shipowner Worst Global Dumper -NSP

German shipowner Ernst Komrowski topped the list of the worst global dumpers with 14 end-of-life vessels sold to the beaches, according to a press release from NGO Ship-breaking Platform (NSP). All of these were formerly part of the Maersk fleet and had been on a long-term charter with the Danish containership giant, which oppositely to Komrowski has a strict ship recycling policy for its own vessels. Second ranks South Korea’s largest container ship owner Hanjin Shipping with 11 ships, followed by Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company. Hanjin and MSC’s bad practice stands in sharp contrast to that of their competitors Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd…

UANI Urges Italian Ship Operator to Desist in Iran Trade

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) called on Italy’s Ignazio Messina & Co. SpA, the world’s second largest roll-on/roll-off tanker operator, to immediately end its Iran operations. Ignazio Messina operates container and roll-on/roll-off services at the port of Bandar Abbas – Iran's largest port through which 90% of its container traffic passes. The Bandar Abbas port is known to be controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Container Ship Strikes Genoa Control Tower; Seven Reported Dead

Officials said seven are dead and two missing after the containership Jolly Nero crashed into a control tower in the Italian port of Genoa late Tuesday night. Rescue workers continue to search the rubble for survivors while divers scour the surrounding waters. The 240-meter ship collided with the 50-meter concrete and glass tower with approximately 13 people thought to be inside. The ship was exiting the port under tow of several tugboats and was on its way to Naples. The cause of the accident still remains unclear…

Wärtsilä Earns Repeat Order from Messina

Wärtsilä has been contracted by the Korean yard STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for four new Container Ro/Ro (ConRo) vessels being built for Ignazio Messina & Co, the Italy based ship owner and operator. This latest order will enable the new vessels to comply with both current and pending environmental legislation relating to exhaust emissions. For ships sailing in European waters, the maximum sulphur content will be limited to 0.5% from 2020…

Cargotec Secures Large MacGregor RoRo Order

In October, Cargotec received a large order to deliver MacGregor RoRo cargo access equipment for four 45,000 dwt container/RoRo vessels for Italian container shipping specialist, Ignazio Messina & C. S.p.A. The ships will be built at the STX Jinhae shipyard in Korea and the MacGregor RoRo equipment will be delivered between the last quarter of 2013 and the second quarter of 2014. Each MacGregor shipset includes a quarter ramp, stern door, ramp covers and doors, division doors and a power pack. "RoRo equipment is an integral part of a vessel's cargo-handling capability," says Magnus Sjöberg, Sales Director for RoRo ships.

ABS Elects New Council

At the 150th Annual Meeting of the Members of ABS, three industry leaders were elected to the ABS Council. Following the Annual Meeting, the ABS Council met and elected industry leaders to both its Marine and Offshore Technical Committees. Individuals serving on the ABS Council and the Technical Committees help guide the class society in fulfilling its mission of promoting the security of life, property and the natural environment. “Classification represents the concept of self-regulation for the marine and offshore industry,” said ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Ship Emissions First: Commercial Scrubber System in Operation

Hamworthy Krystallon announced that the first of four vessels installed with the company’s seawater scrubbers for Italian ship owner Ignazio Messina & Co has come on line. Kalmar Forklifts to Move Cargo for Messina Line

Cargotec has announced an order to supply eight dual purpose Kalmar heavy forklifts to leading Italian shipping firm Messina Line (Ignazio Messina & C S.p.a). Messina Line, which operates out of the port of Genoa in Italy, has purchased the specially adapted Kalmar DCF 420 models to operate on four new ships which it is adding to its fleet. The first forklifts are scheduled for delivery in October 2011, with the remainder to follow in November. The deal is a result of extensive development work between Cargotec and Messina Line to produce a forklift that is equally at home in the restricted space on board the ships as it is handling and stacking containers in the terminal yard.

MarAd Approves Ship Sales and Transfers

The Maritime Administration (MarAd) has approved three vessels sale and transfer under section 9 of the Shipping Act, of 1916, as amended. MarAd has given approval to Industrial Resources, Inc., of Clear Lake, Washington to sale the fishing vessel MOMMA, to Front Street Management LLC of Vancouver, Washington and transfer of said Vessel to Panamanian registry and flag. The fishing vessel was built in 1945. MarAd has given approval to Maersk Lines, Limited, of Norfolk, Va., to sell the container RoRo’s MAERSK ALASKA and MAERSK ARIZONA, to Ignazio Messina and C.S.P.A. of Genoa, Italy and transfer of said Vessels to Italian registry and flag. Both container ships were built in 1976.
