Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. said it has ordered a new self-propelled mega cutter from IHC Merwede in the Netherlands.    The new dredger will be a sister vessel of the Helios, which will be taken into service for Boskalis later this year.   The new vessel will have a total installed power of 23,700 kW, a pumping capacity of 15,600 kW and a maximum cutter capacity of 7,000 kW. The new cutters can dredge in extremely hard ground at depths ranging from 6 to 35 meters.   The new vessel is expected to be commissioned in 2020.

Royal IHC is very honored to be part of the program on the King’s Birthday. Among other activities, the King and his family will be viewing a ‘Grande Maritime Parade’ in Dordrecht. The last ship in this spectacular show is the offshore vessel SEVEN SUN which was built by Royal IHC for offshore contractor Subsea7. Especially for this day the crew carries an exceptional load: a message in a bottle for the King. The SEVEN SUN brings a Royal salute to the Royal couple. This means that the vessel will turn in front of the grandstand in Dordrecht and salutes the Royal family by using the ship’s horn. This moment will also be used to launch two congratulatory wishes to the King by the traditional message in a bottle. Royal IHC is an innovative organization but also values old traditions.

Weeks Marine, Inc. (WMI) and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) signed a contract to complete the construction of its Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger, the MAGDALEN. This 356’ Twin Screw Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger will be constructed at Eastern’s Allanton Panama City, Florida facility. Weeks Marine is another Eastern repeat client. This new construction Dredger project continues our commitment to the US Jones Act maritime industry and its long history of being a successful diversified US Shipbuilder.

Historic Dutch specialist shipyard IHC Merwede says it has been awarded the honorary title of Koninklijk (Royal) by the His Majesty the King. In light of this honour, the company has decided to change its name to Royal IHC and will also include the royal crown in its revised corporate identity. The company explains that the Royal title is an award granted to companies or organisations that meet certain conditions. To qualify, the nominated company must have been in existence for at least 100 years and should have prestige with regard to its image, size and reliability. It must be of national importance to and have prominence in The Netherlands – preferably with an international outlook – and the size of the company…

The South African company Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has named its 750m3 grab hopper dredger, Italeni, during a special ceremony hosted by the shipbuilder IHC Merwede. The ceremony was performed on June 18 by TNPA’s Supply Chain General Manager, Ncumisa Nkanunu, in the shipyard of IHC Merwede’s partner, MTG Dolphin, in Varna, Bulgaria. The contract for the design, construction and delivery of the grab hopper dredger was signed between TNPA and IHC Global Production, part of IHC Merwede, on January 29, 2013.

DBR will supply emergency/harbor diesel generator sets for six new pipelaying vessels under construction at IHC Merwede in the Netherlands for Subsea 7 and SapuraKencana. The order for the custom engineered units, generating up to 1,875 kVA, follows DBR’s successful delivery of three similar generator sets for IHC Merwede in 2013. For each of the six new generator sets, DBR selected Mitsubishi diesel engines and either 800 kVA Leroy Somer or 1,875 kVA AvK generators. The delivery includes cooler and control panels, and the units can operate in up to 50ºC air on temperature.

IHC Merwede has commissioned a prestigious new jubilee book, entitled 70 years IHC Merwede. The first copy of this publication was presented to the mayor of Rotterdam, Mr Ahmed Aboutaleb, at the city’s Maritime Museum. Written by maritime historian Dr Joke Korteweg, this unique and beautifully designed book contains more than 300 pages and approximately 400 photographs. Describing the history of IHC Merwede in several phases, it highlights how the traditional Dutch company has been able to survive challenging circumstances thanks to its commercial and technical innovations. The book also provides an excellent overview of the national and international impact that IHC Merwede has had in political, economic and social spheres.

IHC Merwede has been awarded the contract for the design, construction and delivery of a 5,500m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) to Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) in South Africa. The company was selected after a successful submission into an open tender process for what will be the largest dredging vessel of its kind operating in the country. The new TSHD will join TNPA’s existing fleet of IHC Merwede-built vessels, which features: the 4,200m3 TSHD ISANDLWANA (ordered in 2008); and the grab hopper dredger ITALENI (ordered in 2013).

IHC Merwede successfully increased its orderbook in 2013 across the main sectors of its business: offshore and dredging. The company received almost € 1.8 billion worth of new orders in the past year. At the end of 2013, the order book was valued at over € 1.7 billion, which is the equivalent of a backlog of approximately two years. IHC Merwede develops and builds innovative vessels, advanced equipment and life-cycle support services for the dredging, mining and offshore industries.

IHC Merwede announced that it has appointed Bram Roelse as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with immediate effect as of April 1, 2014. He has taken over this leading role within the company from predecessor Dirk Philips who stepped back in November 2013. Roelse has worked at IHC Merwede for the past 13 years. He was originally appointed as the Managing Director of the company’s business unit IHC Systems. At the end of 2004, he moved to the company’s shipyard at Kinderdijk, where he became Director of the Dredging division.

Kongsberg Maritime inform it has been contracted to deliver substantial technology packages for ten new pipelaying vessels ordered by Brazilian multinational energy corporation, Petrobras. In contracts valued approx. NOK 118 Million, the scope of supply includes Kongsberg Maritime's leading offshore vessel technology including Dynamic Positioning (DP), position reference systems, propulsion control and automation. Six 550-tonne laying tension capacity pipelayers will be built at IHC Merwede in The Netherlands for delivery in 2015 and 2016.

Three of the vessels, for Subsea 7, are identical designs to the recently launched ‘Seven Waves’, and will feature the same K-POS DP22 dual redundant DP system including HiPAP acoustic positioning system and other position reference systems from Kongsberg Maritime.

IHC Merwede named and launched the 23,545 kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger ‘AL BAHAR’ C/D HUTA 12 in a ceremony on March 8, 2014 at the company’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. It is building the innovative vessel for Huta Marine Works, which is based in Saudi Arabia. The ceremony was performed by Sylvia Wuebbens, the daughter of M. Wuebbens, the Managing Director of Huta Marine Works. The contract for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel was signed between Huta Marine Works and IHC Holland, part of IHC Merwede, on October 11, 2012.

IHC Merwede has successfully named and launched the pipelaying vessel Sapura Topázipo in a ceremony at the company’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. The naming of the fully integrated IHC Merwede vessel was carried out by Puan Sri Datin Seri Yazreen Yahya, spouse of Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Shahril Shamsuddin, President and Group CEO of SapuraKencana. The 550t pipelaying vessel – ordered by Sapura Navegação Marítima, a joint venture between SapuraKencana and Seadrill – is the second in a series of five fully integrated offshore vessels…

Cargotec's MacGregor has secured a new IHC Merwede order for subsea cranes, and in Libya Cargotec is to supply a Turkish company with a mobile cement unloader to work ports along the coast. MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won an order worth around EUR 23 million for six active heave-compensated (AHC) subsea cranes from the Dutch IHC Merwede. The cranes will be installed on three pipe-laying ships destined for the UK headquartered global offshore specialist, Subsea 7. Delivery of the cranes is scheduled between June and December 2015.

Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has ordered a new self-propelled megacutter from IHC Merwede. This self-propelled cutter suction dredger, with a total installed power of 23,700 kW and a pump ashore capacity of 15,600 kW, is a replacement investment. The total investment amounts to around EUR 170 million and construction of the vessel is expected to take more than three years. Boskalis explain that a cutter suction dredger is a vessel that dredges while being held into place using spuds and anchors. This technique combines powerful cutting with suction dredging.

IHC Merwede has been contracted by Royal Boskalis Westminster (Boskalis) for the design, construction and delivery of a 23,684kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) which will be one of the largest CSDs of its kind in the world. The shipbuilders say that as part of the close cooperation and working relationship between Boskalis and IHC Merwede, much attention has been paid to the design of this latest CSD in terms of safety, the environment and increased operational workability. A particular feature of the vessel is the widening of the aft ship in order to reduce the draught.

Swedish business software applications company IFS say they have been selected by dredging vessel, mining & equipment firm IHC Merwede to support its key business processes. The contract licenses are worth approximately EUR 2 million. IFS Applications will be implemented as IHC Merwede’s single ERP system (Enterprise Resource Planning)  supporting the company’s key strategic goals: collaboration, globalization, and growth. The implementation, which will be performed in phases and is expected to be complete in 2017…

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won an order worth around €23 million for six active heave-compensated (AHC) subsea cranes from the Dutch IHC Merwede. The cranes will be installed on three pipe-laying ships destined for the U.K. headquartered global offshore specialist, Subsea 7. Delivery of the cranes is scheduled between June and December 2015. The new series builds on others under construction at the IHC Merwede yard for Subsea 7, including the 146m vessel, Seven Waves, which will also be fitted with a MacGregor subsea crane and is scheduled for delivery this year.
