CIMAC Announces its New Board

A new CIMAC Board is due to come into force at the completion of the CIMAC World Congress in Helsinki in June 2016 for the customary three-year tenure, 2016-2019. The new CIMAC Board will have Klaus Heim, Chief Technical Officer of OMT S.p.A as the new CIMAC President. Ilari Kallio, Vice President Research & Development, Wärtsilä is also new to the CIMAC Board where he will be taking up the role of Vice President Technical Program along with Marko Dekena, Executive Vice President, AVL LIST, who will continue in his role also as Vice President Technical Programme. Jin Donghan, President of Shanghai University will be the new Vice President for the Working Groups along with Christian Poensgen…

Hercules-2 Officially Launched

MAN Diesel & Turbo, Wärtsilä and Winterthur Gas & Diesel to collaborate on major, EU-funded project. A major cross-industry initiative led by MAN Diesel & Turbo, Wärtsilä, and Winterthur Gas & Diesel, to develop basic technologies for use in 2- and 4-stroke marine engines has been officially launched. The Hercules-2 project is aimed at fostering environmentally sustainable and more efficient shipping. It is in line with general European Union policy and is partly funded by the EU. Altogether, 32 marine industry partners from 11 different companies, 16 universities, and five research organisations are cooperating in this project, with NTU Athens as coordinator. The R&D efforts focus on four main areas.

Wärtsilä Opens New University R&D Facility

The new Wärtsilä Innovation Node is situated at the heart of the Aalto University campus in Espoo, Finland. Wärtsilä' recently opened Innovation Node brings business experts, students and researchers to the same venue to stimulate creativity and boost effectiveness as well as the cross-disciplinary nature of Wärtsilä’s research and innovation activities. “It is hard to interact in physically separate venues. We want to encourage creativity by uniting the brain power of business professionals, researchers and young talent in the same space,” says Ilari Kallio, Director of Research and Innovation Management, whose desk among a few others is now located on the first floor of the Open Innovation House.

Wärtsilä, Man Diesel Continue Research

Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel & Turbo enter next phase of HERCULES research project. World-leading low- and medium-speed engine manufacturers, Wärtsilä and MAN Diesel & Turbo, announce the kick off of the next phase of the extensive, long-term HERCULES research programme. The overall vision of the programme is to achieve sustainable and safe energy production from marine power plants. This next phase is made possible by funding from the European Commission. Phase III of the HERCULES programme, HERCULES-C, aims at integrating several successful technologies in order to reduce emissions and optimise the efficiency and long-term reliability of marine engines. HERCULES-C is planned to run for three years, from 2012 to 2014, with a budget of EUR 17 million.
