MSC Cruises confirmed it exercised options for two new World Class cruise ships from French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered newbuilds, currently referred to as World Class 3 and 4, will be delivered in 2026 and 2027. MSC Cruises also holds an option for a fifth ship in the series.The newly ordered ships will be an evolution of the World Class vessels, MSC World Europa and MSC World America, which already perform better than the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirement.

WinGD X-DF engines will power CMA CGM’s record setting containerships. French shipping line CMA CGM has chosen WinGD’s largest, 92 cm bore, dual-fuel low-speed engine to power its series of groundbreaking box ships – presently the largest on order globally, and the first ultra large container vessels with capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The series of nine ultra-large 22,000 TEU capacity containerships will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd.

A new study has revealed that nearly three-quarters (71 percent) of all new containerships, which emit around a quarter of global ship CO2 emissions, are already in compliance with the post-2025 requirements of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The study, based on analysis of the IMO’s own data and conducted by Transport & Environment (T&E), a founding member of the Clean Shipping Coalition (CSC), also found that the best 10 percent of new containerships are already almost twice as efficient as the requirement for 10 years time.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is calling for nominations for the Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2017. The biennial IMA recognises individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions to Singapore's development as a premier global hub port and a leading international maritime centre. The marine industry is now recognizing the potential of utilizing hybrid power and innovative propulsion systems. Certain maritime sectors are potentially well suited to hybrid systems. These include ferries, pilot boats and workboats that have relatively consistent duty cycles. For military applications, hybrid systems are relevant for patrol, intercept and autonomous vessel duties. Submarines have utilized batteries and stored energy for many years. Diesel/electric systems have long been in use, but these are not hybrid systems.

Wärtsilä is to team up with an international group of shipping industry companies and organisations in a project to develop a concept for equipping future dry bulk carrier vessels with LNG propulsion. Project Forward is led by Athens-based Arista Shipping. A new CE Delft study has revealed that many recently constructed ships already meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) design efficiency standard for 2020, says Pan European Networks. The study, commissioned by Brussels-based NGOs Seas at Risk and Transport & Environment, calculated the Estimated Index Values (EIV) of new ships built between 2009-2014 and concluded that the majority of container and general cargo ships built in recent years already meet the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) standards set for 2020. While there was a small improvement in the design efficiency of new ships between 2009 and 2012, this changed significantly in 2013 and 2014.

Product and chemical tanker specialist Ardmore Shipping has taken delivery of the Ardmore Seaventure from SPP Shipbuilding in Korea and immediately delivered the tanker to Cargill on a 12 month time charter arrangement. The Ardmore Seaventure is a 49,999 deadweight ton (dwt) IMO 3 product and chemical tanker and the second vessel to be delivered to Ardmore Shipping from a series of four orders placed with SPP Shipbuilding, Korea. Ardmore Shipping Celebrates Naming of "Ardmore Seavaliant' and 'Ardmore Seaventure'. Ardmore Seavaliant immediately chartered to Cargill, following naming at SPP Shipbuilding. Chemical and product tanker specialist Ardmore Shipping has named the two newest vessels to join its fleet, the Ardmore Seavaliant and the Ardmore Seaventure. The naming ceremonies for the two newbuild vessels took place at SPP Shipbuilding in South Korea, prior to the Ardmore Seavaliant being immediately delivered to Cargill on a 12-month time charter arrangement.

Almi Sun and Almi Explorer were delivered by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Shipyard, Geoje Island, Korea and have commenced their operational lives. These ships are a further development of Almi Horizon delivered back in 2011. The latest deliveries have electronically controlled main engines, each turning a slightly larger propeller and they benefit from pre-swirl stators to further enhance energy efficiency. The ships have been verified by LR in accordance with the voluntary energy-efficiency requirements of the IMO's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships.

Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas has issued its first EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) certificate to the ultramax geared bulk carrier JS Amazon, the lead ship in a new generation of ‘CROWN63’ vessels developed by China’s  Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group with bulk carrier expert Setaf-Saget. The 63,300 dwt vessel is designed for the carriage of bulk cargoes, including coal, iron ore, grain and cement, as well as a range of dangerous cargoes. Its GHG (Green House Gas) performance when measured in accordance with IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index is twenty per cent better than the requirement under MARPOL Annex VI and already reaches the Phase II requirement normally set for the years 2020/2024.

Hapag-Lloyd became the first shipping company in the world to have its entire own-managed fleet certified in accordance with the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The independent certification was carried out by Germanischer Lloyd and shows that many vessels in the Hapag-Lloyd fleet have an EEDI that is between 20 and 27% better than the average figure for the active global fleet in their respective classes. This means that these vessels emit significantly less CO2 than the average of the world fleet.

Increased interest in the building of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers at Chinese shipyards spurred the recent Large LNG Carriers Forum, held in Shanghai, and conducted jointly by classification societies ABS and CCS (China Classification Society) in conjunction with leading LNG operators. More than 150 representatives from the Chinese government, shipowners, shipbuilders, designers, energy corporations and universities attended the forum. Topics presented by leading industry participants Poten & Partners, NYK Line LNG Group and BG Americas included the global LNG market outlook, LNG carrier specifications and LNG carrier operations and fleet management.
