Even after concerted efforts from leaders in the maritime community and some improvement in the numbers, the crew change crisis caused by COVID-19 restrictions continues to create challenges, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization has warned.In a statement, IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim said that based on industry analysis, the numbers of seafarers requiring repatriation after finishing their contracts had declined—from a high of around 400,000 in September 2020, to around 200,000 as of March 2021, with a similar number waiting to join ships.

Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority a candidate for the post as IMO Secretary General      Denmark nominates Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Andreas Nordseth for the post as Secretary General of United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO). Today, Minister for Business and Growth Henrik Sass Larsen has announced that Denmark will nominate Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Andreas Nordseth as a candidate for the post as Secretary General of the IMO. The post will become vacant on 1 January 2016 as present Secretary General Koji Sekimizu will resign from his position at the end of 2015. It is expected that the election will be announced in December 2014 and will be held by the IMO Council in June/July 2015.

Speaking at the first meeting of the newly-formed IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction, IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has delivered his New Year Address outlining some of the targets, challenges and priorities the Organization in year 2014. Mr. Sekimizu recalled that he was speaking on the day of the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the first ever Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS), which was a direct response to the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

More than 200 stakeholders from the maritime world gathered at the Culture Yard in Elsinore, Denmark, where the World Maritime University, in collaboration with the Danish Shipowners' Association, hosted a major international conference focusing on maritime CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). The conference was part of the thrust to formulate maritime CSR policies and to implement them by self-regulation, an area in which analysts consider the shipping industry has been slow to adopt in comparison with others.

Danish Shipowners' Association in collaboration with the World Maritime University; BIMCO; The Nippon Foundation and the Japanese International Transport Institute will focus on maritime corporate social responsibility (CSR) at the Culture Yard in Helsingør on Tuesday November 12, 2013. The conference, entitled " Northern European Shipping CSR Symposium - Making the Business Case for a Sustainable Shipping Industry " derives in part of the Rio +20 sustainable global development based on voluntary participation by private companies . Focus will be both theoretical and practical on how European companies and organizations engaged in CSR and on the triple bottom line, which consists of profit but also social and environmental aspects .

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) recently hosted a St. Petersburg international conference 'Arctic Shipping and Offshore Activities: Responding to Safety and Environmental Challenges' . The conference was attended by key figures with interests in Arctic develoment, including the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Mr Koji Sekimizu. The international maritime community is focusing on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) as a measure to reduce the costs as well as time of cargo transportation, the latter resulting in reduction of CO2 emissions.

I woke up at 07:00 this morning to the sound of the hull hitting ice. I realised that it was the ice and jumped off the bed to take a photo from my cabin window. The sea was not extensively covered by ice. We had left Dixon just a half day ago and we were navigating well into the Kara Sea. IMO Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization Koji Sekimizu addressed staff and cadets on the golden jubilee of the Bangladesh Marine Academy. "In the 50 years since the Bangladesh Maritime Academy took its first influx of new cadet trainees, it has established a strong reputation for producing a consistent stream of diligent, conscientious, capable and highly-qualified personnel for the shipping industry. This has not happened without a great deal of foresight, planning and sheer hard work from a large number of people: from politicians, to the Academy staff and, indeed, to the cadets and trainees themselves. The modern ship’s officer needs to be far more than a navigator or an engineer, and the modern ship’s crewman needs to be far more than a manual labourer.

Mr. Koji Sekimizu says in his blog that it was fitting that Nor-Shipping's theme –  'Next generation shipping' – came in the year that IMO implemented EEDI & SEEM. "Shipping is still in an adjustment period. Shipping is a cyclical industry and we have seen a similar state of affairs in the 1970s, when the world encountered the oil crises in 1973 and 1978. In order to overcome the over tonnage, measures applied by the industry were ship lay-up, slow steaming, and eventually ship scrapping. More than three decades later, we have encountered the same situation.

International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) visited by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General. The purpose of the visit was to discuss matters of mutual interest, in particular in the field of the future of maritime communications and how new technologies would support the sustainability of the maritime sector. IMSO Director General, Captain Esteban Pacha-Vicente, said: “IMSO is honoured to receive Mr Sekimizu on his first visit to IMSO in his capacity as the IMO Secretary-General, although he has in the past attended many IMSO meetings.

In his opening address to the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee's 91st Session Mr. Koji Sekimizu pushes for publication of Costa Concordia accident report. "As the loss of the Costa Concordia amply demonstrated, those affected are quick to call for action. The international nature of the passengers and crew – with some 70 nationalities involved in the Costa Concordia incident – highlighted the need for an international response, through IMO, to take the appropriate and necessary action in evaluating, developing, and implementing any provisions that might be recommended and needed, following consideration of the outcome of the casualty investigation and any other relevant information.
