Dali Hit Key Bridge with the Force of 66 Heavy Trucks at Highway Speed

The cargo ship Dali knocked down three main truss spans, constructed with connected steel elements forming triangles, on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just seconds after crashing into one of the bridge piers early on Tuesday morning, March 26, 2024.The bridge collapse happened so fast that it left little time for the work crews on the bridge to escape. Civil engineers like me have been paying attention to this disaster, because we want to find ways to make infrastructure like these large bridges more resilient. For a bridge this large to collapse would require a catastrophic collision force.

Wagenborg's Multi-Purpose Vessel to Support Decommissioning Works in the Southern North Sea

A Royal Visit at Damen Shiprepair Curacao

King of the Netherlands King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima have visited Damen Shiprepair Curaçao. The Royal couple arrived by boat together with Damen Shiprepair & Conversion Managing Director Durk-Jan Nederlof. Before disembarking, they viewed the yard’s two new floating docks that will be operational from September. These two docks, measuring 230x45 metres and 108x 23 metres respectively, represent a significant investment into the yard’s infrastructure that is expected to have a positive knock-on effect on the local economy. Lodewijk Franken, Managing Director of Damen Shiprepair Curaçao, then guided the Royal couple around the yard, speaking to numerous employees along the route.

GSI Completes 13-vessel Series for Stena Bulk

The final vessel has been named in a series of 13 chemical and product tankers ordered by Stena Bulk at the Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) shipyard. The 50,000 dwt MR tanker Stena Impero was named on Wednesday in Guangzhou, China, completing a series of newbuilds ordered at Chinese shipyard GSI in 2012 for SEK 4 billion ($508 million). The MR tanker Stena Imagination was named in the Port Rashid Terminal in the heart of Dubai. According to Erik Hånell, President & CEO of Stena Bulk and CEO of Stena Weco, “Naming the Stena Imagination in Dubai is very much a strategic choice. Stena Bulk recently opened an office here together with Stena Weco and Golden Stena Weco. We already had a presence in the market in the region but wanted to get even closer to our customers. On January 19-20, 2017 Novorossiysk Shipping Company (Novoship), a subsidiary of SCF Group, hosted special events dedicated to the company’s 50th anniversary. Vyborg to Build Four Trawlers for ATF

Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet (ATF) has entered into contract with Vyborg Shipyard for the construction of a series of fishing trawlers. The shipbuilding contract, signed at the the International Forum "The Fishing Fleet - New Impulse to Development" in Murmansk in March 2016, entered into force in November 2016. For ATF, Vyborg Shipyard, a group member of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), will build four "turnkey" medium-size trawlers project ST 116 XL to be operated in the North Basin. Each vessel of the new generation will have on board a fillet factory, a fish meal plant, equipment for fish oil production, a can factory and will be equipped with cargo cranes with high capacity as well as a cargo trawl complex of the latest generation.

IMOIIMAX Tanker Stena Immortal Delivered

The Stena Immortal was delivered yesterday from the Chinese shipyard GSI (Guangzhou Shipbuilding International) in southeast China. The vessel is jointly owned on a 50-50 basis by Stena Bulk and Indonesian Golden Agri Resources (GAR) and is the eighth of a total of 13 IMOIIMAX tankers ordered by Stena Bulk in 2012. She will be operated by Stena Weco and will sail in the company’s global logistics system, which currently employs about 60 vessels. 2016: The Stena Imperative, Stenaweco Impulse and Stena Imagination.

Chinese shipyard GSI (Guangzhou Shipbuilding International) has delivered the newly built MR tanker Stena Imagination to 50-50 joint owners Stena Bulk and Indonesian Golden Agri Resources (GAR). She will be operated by Stena Weco and sail in the company’s global logistics system, which currently employs about 60 vessels. Stena Imagination is the seventh of 13 IMOIIMAX tankers ordered by Stena Bulk. Three of the 13 IMOIIMAX tankers are wholly owned by Stena Bulk, six together with GAR, two by Stena Bulk’s sister company Concordia Maritime and two by Stena Weco.

Danish Princess Names Stenaweco Impulse

Newly built chemical and product tanker Stenaweco Impulse was named by H.R.H. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, whobroke a bottle of champagne against the tanker’s bow and wished the vessel, her captain and his crew fortune and prosperity. Named on Monday at a cerempny at Langelinie Pier in the center of Copenhagen, Stenaweco Impulse is the newest vessel owned by Stena Weco, a joint venture between Swedish Stena Bulk and Danish Weco Shipping for the transport of vegetable oils, chemicals and petroleum products.

The chemical and product tanker Stena Weco Impulse, jointly owned on a 50-50 basis by Stena Bulk and the Danish Weco Group, has been delivered from the Chinese shipyard CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering (CSSC OME) in Guangzhou. The IMOIIMAX tanker Stena Weco Impulse is the sixth in a series of 13 vessels ordered by Stena Bulk. She is now en route to several Indonesian ports where she will load vegetable oils after which she will sail to Barcelona and Rotterdam to discharge her cargo. The naming ceremony will take place in Copenhagen in June 2016.

EU-US Trade Deal on Course for This Year

EU and U.S. negotiators seeking a transatlantic free trade agreement expressed cautious optimism on Friday that they could resolve most issues by July, which could lead to a conclusion of a deal by the end of the year. The two sides are trying to agree on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which supporters say could boost each economy by some $100 billion at a time of slowing growth in China and emerging markets. "We now have proposed texts in the vast majority of the negotiating areas... we are well into the nitty gritty of the negotiating process," Dan Mullaney, chief U.S. negotiator, told a news conference at the end of a 12th round of talks.

ABB wins UAE Order for Solar Power Grid Integration

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $55 million from Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), the leading power utility in United Arab Emirates (UAE), to build a substation that will integrate power from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park. The order was awarded in the third quarter of 2014. The gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation will enhance transmission capacity, boost power supplies and strengthen the reliability of the grid. The 100 megawatt (MW) Phase II of the solar power plant in Seih Al Dahal, about 50 kilometers (km) south of Dubai, is scheduled to commence generation in 2017. The solar park is one of the biggest renewable energy projects in the Middle East and North Africa.

New Tanker Stena Imperial Named in Savannah

A new 50,000 DWT MR chemical and product tanker based on the IMOIIMAX concept, Stena Imperial, was named yesterday in Savannah, Ga. Built by Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) and delivered on July 1, Stena Imperial recently arrived in Savannah on the U.S. East Coast with a cargo of palm oil. The new ship is owned by a joint venture of which Stena Bulk and Indonesian Golden Agri Resources (GAR) each own 50 percent. She is the third of 10 vessels ordered by Stena Bulk for a total of $400 million with delivery to be completed by 2017.

LNG-Powered, Electric Engine, Boxship Concept Design

French LNG containment specialist GTT, along with French containerline CMA CGM (and its subsidiary CMA Ships) and classification society DNV GL have released a technical and feasibility study for a new mega boxship dubbed the Piston Engine Room Free Efficient Containership (PERFECt), which could get rid of engine rooms all together. The concept vessel is LNG-fuelled, powered by a combined gas and steam turbine, and is electrically driven. Exploring this novel configuration resulted in the partners identifying and analyzing a propulsion concept that has the potential to offer a more efficient, more flexible and greener box ship design than current 20,000 TEU two-stroke diesel engine driven ultra large container vessels.
