Chile Uses High-tech Buoys to Protect Migrating Whales

A smart buoy that can "hear" the ocean and monitor climate change is part of a new effort to help endangered whales avoid ship collisions on their journey from Antarctica to the equator.The buoy was installed in the Gulf of Corcovado, some 1,100 kilometers (684 miles) south of Chile's capital, in early October and is the first of many planned by the Blue Boat Initiative, a project designed to protect whales and monitor marine ecosystems.The area is teeming with marine life and…

Holland America Line Celebrates Official Handover of 'Koningsdam'

Holland America Line celebrated the delivery of ms Koningsdam with an official Handover Ceremony, luncheon and shipyard workers party aboard the ship Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy. In attendance at the ceremony was Italy’s Minister of Infrastructures and Transport Graziano Delrio, who expressed his appreciation for the long-standing relationship between Carnival Corporation, including Holland America Line, and Fincantieri. Other speakers included Giuseppe Bono, chief executive officer, Fincantieri, and Arnold Donald, chief executive officer, Carnival Corporation. A video was shown of the Italian flag being changed to the Dutch flag, as flown by all Holland America Line ships.

Fincantieri Delivers Koningsdam to Holland America Line

Holland America Line’s newest ship Koningsdam was delivered today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Marghera. The new ship will officially be presented on Saturday April 2 in a Handover Ceremony. At 99,800 gross tons, almost 300 meters long, with accommodation for up to 2,650 passengers on board in more than 1,300 cabins, 70 percent of which with private balcony overlooking the sea, the new unit will not only be a new Pinnacle class ship, but also the 15th unit realized by Fincantieri for Holland America Line…

Carnival Corp. to Launch Four New Ships in 2016

Carnival Corporation & plc will launch four new ships in 2016 across four of its global cruise brands. These additions are part of the 17 ships scheduled for delivery for Carnival Corporation’s 10 brands through 2020. “As we execute our fleet enhancement plan – which includes a long-term strategy for bringing highly efficient, state-of-the-art ships to market and elevating the overall cruise experience, we are excited about seeing these new ships come to life this year,” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation.

Carnival Vista Floated Out

The Carnival Vista has completed its dry dock phase and was recently floated out to a new location at Italy's Fincantieri shipyard, Carnival Cruise Line has announced. Carnival Vista, currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, has been “floated out” from its dry dock facility and towed to a new location at the yard, marking a significant construction milestone in the ship’s construction progress in anticipation of its May 1, 2016, debut. Carnival Vista will be Carnivals biggest cruise ship yet clocking in at 133,500 GT and 1,055 feet long. She will hold over 3000 passengers and have a host of new innovations for the line. A couple of the new features of Vista are the first IMAX theater at sea, a new cycle style ride called SkyRide and an onboard brewery.

Holland America Floats out Koningsdam

Holland America Line's new ms Koningsdam is set to be delivered March 31, 2016. This week the ship was transferred from its dry dock to its outfitting dock at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Italy, where the final construction and interior furnishings will take place. The initial stages of a cruise ship's construction take place in a dry dock facility. Once exterior outfitting is completed, the dry dock is flooded and the ship is floated to a wet dock where construction continues. “A ship’s construction has many key milestones, and floating it out and moving it to the outfitting dock is especially symbolic,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line.

In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson was President; the Beatles first appeared on the Billboard Chart with I Want to Hold Your Hand; the World's Fair opened in New York and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry made its grand debut. On July 1, 1964, the very first ferry vessel departed the Lewes, Delaware terminal at 6:47 a.m. The ferry carried eight vehicles and 15 passengers. Since then, more than 43 million passengers and over 14 million vehicles have made the scenic, 17- mile, 85-minute trip across Delaware Bay to and from Victorian Cape May, NJ and historic Lewes, Delaware.

German Shipyard Welcomes Cunard's QE to Dry-Dock

The cruise ship 'Queen Elizabeth', has arrived at the Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, for her first scheduled dry-docking since she entered service in 2010, inform Cunard Line. “Queen Elizabeth is already a much loved ship and following this multi-million dollar refit, she is sure to shine brightly for years to come,” said David Dingle, CEO for Cunard Line. On the technical side, scrubber technology (exhaust gas cleaning system) is being installed in line with Cunard’s commitment to minimising the company’s environmental impact. In response to passenger demand and changing demographics, a total of nine new single staterooms are being created on Deck 2 midships by remodeling part of Queen Elizabeth’s casino.

Holland American Line Launches 'Dive-in At The Terrace Grill’

Holland America Line is enhancing the Terrace Grill on its 15 premium ships and rebranding the popular lunch spot as “Dive-In at the Terrace Grill.” The outdoor bistro-style grill area by the ships’ Lido pool will feature new signature burgers, hot dogs and fries. The first ships to open the new gourmet grill were ms Eurodam, ms Amsterdam and ms Maasdam. The remaining ships in the fleet will be opening Dive-In at the Terrace Grill throughout summer 2014. ABB to Play Role in Protecting Venice

ABB’s Symphony Plus control system to help protect Venice from high water flooding at the long Venetian Lagoon Malamocco inlet. Cruise ships agree to adopt the strictest measures to reduce air pollution when entering Italy's Venice Lagoon. Holland America Debuts Pool Concept

When Holland America Line's ms Statendam, ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam, ms Veendam and ms Rotterdam emerge from nearly month-long dry docks with an additional $200m in investments, one of the highlights will be The Retreat, a new resort-style pool area on the aft of the Lido deck. The main focus of the new pool experience will be a shallow area with forty-four lounge chairs where guests can relax and dip their fingers and toes in the water. Built-in benches create another place for guests to relax and dangle their legs in the refreshing water.

Italy: Grimaldi Continues Fast Track Expansion

Manuel Grimaldi confided to some close friends last December that not only had he decided to set up a new line from Italy to Spain but also to purchase Superfast 1 now called Eurostar Roma for about $49.3 million. The specification of the vessel will mean a greater presence in Mediterranean RoRo and in fact there are now three of this type of vessel under the name of Grimaldi Ferry Prestige. The new purchase Eurostar Roma (pictured opposite page) was presented by the Naples shipping group in Rome on January 23, 2004. The vessel is 24,000 tons, 570.8 ft. (174 m) long, with a beam of 78.7 ft. (24 m) and a cruising speed of 27 knots. Eurostar Rome can carry 1,400 passengers with 100 cars as well as 110 trailers.

Blohm + Voss Repair Wins Business

Earlier this year, the Black Prince of the Fred. Olsen Cruises Line shipping company docked into Dock 10 of Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH. The cruise liner was originally constructed in such a way that it was able to be employed on the one hand as a passenger liner and cargo ship, and on the other as a passenger and car ferry. The Black Prince was converted into a pure passenger liner in 1986. A maximum of 451 passengers can go on a cruise in the 241 cabins of the Black Prince. The last full renovation took place in 1999. The 464.6 x 66.5 ft. (141.6 x 20.3 m) ship, with a draft of 21 ft. (6.4 m) is now receiving a new crankshaft on the port side at Blohm + Voss Repair. Moreover, some paint work has to be carried out in addition to retouch work on the engine plant.

Mivan Wins Cruise Deal

Northern Ireland’s Mivan has won contracts to outfit the interior of two cruiseships. The contracts, totalling around £3m, will be undertaken in the Bahamas and in Malta. Mivan will help refit Royal Caribbean International’s 73,192 grt Sovereign of the Seas at Grand Bahamas Shipyard (GBS) in Freeport, and carry out the conversion of Cunard’s 24,492 grt Caronia, to be renamed Saga Ruby for her new owners Saga Shipping at Malta Drydocks. Mivan Chief Executive, Dr. Ivan McCabrey, “This has been an excellent year for Mivan in the cruiseship sector with around £6m of new contracts secured to date. The Sovereign of the Seas contract will be completed by early December 2004 over a three-week period.
