Inland Waterways Authority of India Releases Ship Designs for River Ganga

Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) made public 13 standardised state-of-the-art ship designs suitable for large barge haulage on river Ganga (National Waterway-1).This marks attaining of a critical milestone in the growth of the country’s Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector as it will help overcome the unique navigation challenges river Ganga throws due to its complex river morphology, hydraulics, acute bends, shifting channels, meanders and current.It will serve as an enabler for domestic shipbuilding industry working on inland vessels and open huge possibilities for cargo and passenger movement on National Waterway-1.The Government…

Ferry Design Contest Winners Selected

The Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) has announced the winners of its 2017 competition for the design of a safe and affordable ferry, chosen by a panel of judges. The awards will be presented on May 11, at WFSA’s Ferry Safety & Technology Conference. Dr. Roberta Weisbrod, the Executive Director of the WFSA, said, “Urban linear ferries like Bangkok and New York are in growth mode everywhere. IRS on Talent Acquisition Spree

IRClass, the Leading Ship Classification Society has hired 17 of the brightest and best Naval Architecture students from the elite technical institutes of India. IRClass celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. In keeping with the philosophy of acquiring the brightest talent, IRClass has visited four technical institutes of India namely, IIT-Chennai, IIT-Kharagpur, Indian Maritime Institute-Vizag and CUSAT-Kochin for campus placements to induct best talent from the field of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The management has constituted a four member senior management team to visit and select trainees from these Institutes. After gruelling selection process, 17 students including batch toppers were selected and invited to join the prestigious Trainee Scheme of the organisation.

ClassNK’s Super Eco Ship for Coastal Trade

As the Industry waits for the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India to roll out the much hyped policy to boost Coastal Shipping and Inland Waterways transport, ClassNK & Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) took the first step to conduct a workshop on “Super Eco Ship For India Coastal Trade” as a strategy to be first to cash in on the opportunities when the policy gets implemented. Held in Mumbai last week at the IRS auditorium, both the classes presented to the gathering of ship owners, coastal operators, barge owners, representatives of manning companies, shippers and other allied trade the large number of options and opportunities that the trade and industry could avail of in order to get the full advantage of coastal shipping and inland waterway transport.

Shipbreaking

The new IMO convention on Ship Recycling and the EU Proposal for Regulation of Ship Recycling are being viewed with concern by ship recyclers in Alang, India. If these come into force it is possible this world’s biggest grave yard for ships will have to close down. Alang is considered natures’ gift to the Indian ship recycling industry. Located in Gujarat, on the West coast of India, the shipyards in Alang recycle approximately half of all ships salvaged around the world. Having come into existence in June 1983, Alang, today encompasses over 180 ship yards stretching across 11 km of the coast line and is presently engaged in dismantling over 150 ships simultaneously. During 2011-12, Alang had achieved a record 415 ships’ demolition.

P.B. (Kaj) Shah, Senior Vice President of Customer Service, was named President of Ingram Barge company. The appointment was announced by Craig E. Philip, CEO of Ingram Barge Company. Shah has been an Ingram executive since 1989. Most recently, he has been responsible for managing the logistics and transportation needs of Ingram’s dry cargo customers. During his more than 20 years at Ingram, Shah has held various positions in Logistics, Corporate Development, Planning and Strategy, and Information Technology with several Ingram companies.

India’s Busiest Port Resumes Operations

Kandla, India's busiest port which was damaged in last month's earthquake, resumed operations at all its 10 general cargo berths on Wednesday with load restrictions on some of them, the port chairman said. "We are operating on all 10 cargo berths with load restrictions on berth numbers one to five from today (Wednesday) onwards," Kandla Port Trust Chairman A.K. Joti told Reuters. Operations were halted on January 26 by the huge quake which struck the western state of Gujarat, killing at least 30,000 people. The port resumed partial operations on February 3. "As of now more than 80 percent of the port capacity is being utilized," a shipping ministry statement said. Port authorities have been facing pressure from traders and the government to restore capacity after the quake.
