Fire Extinguished at Turkey's Quake-hit Iskenderun Port

Shipping Containers Ablaze at Turkey's Iskenderun Port, Operations Halted

Hundreds of shipping containers were ablaze at Turkey's Iskenderun Port on Tuesday, shutting down operations and forcing freight liners to divert vessels to other ports.Turkey's maritime authority said on Monday that the port, located on the Mediterranean coast in the southern province of Hatay, was damaged due to the earthquake that struck Turkey and neighbouring Syria.Drone footage showed fierce flames blackening hundreds of containers on the dock, with water jets from a fire truck dwarfed by the scale of the blaze that broke out on Monday.

Revenues Soar at Russia’s PAO Sovcomflot

PAO Sovcomflot (SCF Group), which serves the energy shipping and offshore services to the oil and gas industries, reported in the first half of 2019 revenues rose 16.6% ($828m vs. $710.1m), TCE revenue rose 19.1% ($609m vs. $511.3m) and EBITDA rose 42.4% ($381.2m vs. $267.7m) as compared to the first half of 2018.Highlights from the first half included:• Korolev Prospect, Vernadsky Prospect and Samuel Prospect LNG-fuelled 114,000 DWT Aframax tankers added to the fleet.•In March 2019, the Group celebrated the 10th anniversary of the start of LNG shipments from the Sakhalin-2 project.

Hempel Invests in Fire Protection Coatings R&D

Coatings manufacturer Hempel announced that it is investing in a new research and development center focused solely on passive fire protection coatings. Located just outside Barcelona in Spain, the center is due to open toward the end of 2018. Passive fire protection (PFP) coatings are increasingly important in the construction and oil and gas industries. Applied to structural steel in large buildings and industrial oil and gas installations, the coatings expand to form an insulating layer of carbon char when exposed to high temperatures.

Varna Products, manufacturer of industrial oil & fuel pumps, announced the promotion of Mark Ashurst to Operations & Facility Manager. Ashurst has been with VARNA Products/Transportation Research Corp. for nine years in charge of production. Mark’s focus will be on organizing, directing, and coordinating all production activities as well as streamlining processes and new product development. Varna has also added a new team member to the electrical engineering/production team, Wilson “Boyd” Mello.
