Japanese Shipbuilders Go Forward with LCO2 Carriers for Large-Scale Transport

ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a parcel layout concept for a hydrogen-fueled multi-purpose vessel developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), MOL Drybulk Ltd. (MOL Drybulk), Onomichi Dockyard Co., Ltd. (Onomichi Dockyard), Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Kawasaki), Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG). ABS Joins Korean Partners on 3D Printing Project

Japanese Shipping Companies Partner on Liquefied Hydrogen

Japanese shipping companies, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (ā€œKā€ Line), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), have agreed to join JSE Ocean, a subsidiary of Japan Suiso Energy (JSE).JSE remains the majority shareholder with 50.2% of stock, whilst the shipping companies hold 16.6% each.Japanā€™s Basic Hydrogen Strategy, revised by the Japanese government in June 2023, identifies hydrogen as the alternative to fossil fuels as it targets decarbonisation. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Launches Liquefied CO2 Carrier Demonstrator Ship

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has launched a test ship for the transport of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2).The 236-foot ship has a storage capacity of 1,450 m³ and will be used with demonstration carbon capture and storage projects that are underway for Japanā€™s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).The Engineering Advancement Association of Japan (ENAA), one of the consignees for the NEDO demonstration projects, will charter the ship from Sanyu Kisen, and install and operate the low temperature, high pressure storage system.

ClassNK Grants AIP for Ammonia-fueled Ammonia Gas Carrier

Classifiction society ClassNK has issued an approval in principle (AIP) for an ammonia-fueled ammonia gas carrier (AFAGC) that is currently under research and development of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), Japan Engine Corporation, IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd.Ammonia is expected to be used as ship fuel for decarbonization since it does not emit CO2 when combusted. Meanwhile, adequate safety measures are imperative as it has been pointed out that ammonia is toxic to humans and corrosive to materials.

Classification society ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the design of a large-scale liquefied carbon dioxide (CO2) carrier developed through Research and Development Project from NEDO by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL).MOL has launched research and development (R&D) on the adoption of a large-scale liquefied CO2 carrier in response to a call for proposals by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to complete the conceptual design, under a project entrusted by NEDO to Japan CCS Co., Ltd. (JCCS).

NYK to Modify Tugboat to Ammonia Fuel at Keihin Dock Co.

NYK finalized a contract with Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, to modify a tugboat to ammonia-fuel specifications. Sakigake, a tugboat currently fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and operated in Tokyo Bay by NYK Group company Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation will be converted to operate on ammonia fuel by a target completion year of 2024.This R&D was initiated in October 2021 by NYK and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd.

A methane oxidation catalyst system developed by Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and Yanmar Power Technologies Co. An official keel-laying ceremony for the offshore wind installation vessel ā€˜Green Jadeā€™ was held Friday at CSBCā€™s shipyard in Kaohsiung, marking an important moment in Taiwanā€™s maritime and offshore wind history.ā€˜Green Jadeā€™ is owned by CDWE, a joint venture between CSBC, the largest shipbuilder in Taiwan and DEME Offshore.The vessel is the first floating, DP3 heavy lift and installation vessel to be built in Taiwan. ā€˜Green Jadeā€™ will feature a 4,000-tonne crane capacity and will be equipped to transport multiple the next generationā€¦

GERE Goes Carbon Neutral

GE Renewable Energy, the renewable energy arm of US industrial technology giant General Electric, announced its plan to make 100 percent of its operations carbon neutral by the end of 2020.GE Renewable Energy will reach carbon neutrality by reducing emissions through operational efficiencies, securing renewable electricity supply to all GE Renewable Energy sites throughout its operations for wind, offshore wind, hydropower, energy storage and grid businesses ā€“ and balancing remaining emissions with the purchase of carbon offsets to achieve a net-zero footprint.Jérôme Pécresse, CEO, GE Renewable Energy said, ā€œThis is a decision that makes business sense.
