From humble beginnings KVH has evolved rapidly to become a central player in the maritime world’s global Big Data revolution. Maritime Reporter & Engineering News caught up with Martin Kits van Heyningen in Oslo for his take on KVH’s current position and future direction. “We certainly didn’t envision that we would be in the high-speed satellite broadband business when we started,” is how Kits van Heyningen, President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board, KVH, succinctly summarizes the biggest difference between the company he founded in 1982 versus the one he leads today.

Elmer A. Sperry casts a long shadow over the history of modern naval, nautical and aeronautical technology, one few people know much about, but should, for a man crowned both the “father of modern navigational technology” and “the father of automatic feedback and control systems,” as well as a pioneer of rocket and missile technology. “It is safe to say that no one American has contributed so much to our naval technical progress,” eulogized Charles Francis Adams III, Secretary of the Navy from 1929-1933, on the death of engineering genius Elmer Ambrose Sperry, June 16, 1930, at 69.

Offshore Survey Training Seminar Scheduled for October

Master Class Seminars has announced the hosting of the Offshore Survey Training Seminar, October 21 through October 25, 2002. The workshop will be held in West Houston, at a venue to be announced shortly. The course is being offered in response to a high level of demand for advanced and hands-on offshore survey training, and will include instruction on the theoretical, operational and data processing aspects of surface and underwater positioning, seabed mapping; geodesy and coordinate systems. There will also be talks on the latest concepts and technologies associated with GPS, inertial systems, and the relevance of GIS for offshore applications.
