FMC Examining How Data Can Improve Ocean Cargo Velocity

The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) said it has set out to identify data constraints that impede the flow of ocean cargo and add to supply chain inefficiencies as severe bottlenecks continue to hamper global supply chains.Launched at the direction of FMC Chairman Daniel B. Maffei and spearheaded by Commissioner Carl W. Bentzel, the initiative seeks to to pinpoint how data can contribute to the long-term reliability of the domestic cargo delivery system. Riga, Qingdao Sign Port Cooperation Pact

The Freeport of Riga in Latvia has announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement with the Port of Qingdao in China, one of the ten busiest ports in the world.According to a statement, the goal of the agreement is to facilitate trading, logistics and business partnerships between Latvia and China, boosting the exchange of information and expertise in the fields of port planning and development, port management and information technologies.“Last autumn, we transported cargo by rail directly from the City of Xi'an to the Port of Riga. After signing this agreement, we can hope for new cargo flows in future,” said the statement.The Port of Qingdao is one of the ten largest ports worldwide in terms of cargo turnover.

That society would be impossible without modern computers and other information technologies Those technologies have largely been developed piecemeal to address particular issues, and for the most part they have generally achieved their particular goals. Maximum efficiency is gained when multiple technologies are joined to coordinate their work. Computers get smaller and faster, with ever-growing memory. Joining computers together allowed for creation of the internet.

Fincantieri Buys Stake in Isselnord

Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri said it has signed through one of its subsidiaries an agreement for the acquisition of a stake in Isselnord, an Italian company operating in defense-related sectors and in the main industrial branches in the civil sector, specialized in logistic support engineering, maintenance and information technologies. The agreement was signed through Fincantieri’s company Delfi, created in 2008 in joint venture with Isselnord, charged with the development of logistic support engineering and maintenance activities related to orders in the naval sector. The initial transaction is for a majority stake in the company, with full takeover to be completed within a predetermined time frame, Fincantieri said.

SCF's New Icebreaker Named Gennadiy Nevelskoy

Built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, the Russian flagged Gennadiy Nevelskoy (deadweight 3,000 metric tons) will home port in Saint Petersburg and was commissioned by SCF under a long-term agreement with Sakhalin Energy. She is the first of four vessels for operations at the Sakhalin-2 project; the other three are ice-breaking standby vessels (IBSBVs) that have a smaller deadweight (2,000 metric tons), but offer enhanced functionality and a higher people-on-board capacity. SENER Presents Study on Implementation of CAD System

At the annual COMPIT conference, the SENER engineering and technology group presented a technical/economic study on the implementation of a CAD system in a shipyard and, in particular, the FORAN System, developed by SENER. The event took place in Lecce, Italy, on May 9, 10 and 11. COMPIT is an international conference focusing on software applications and information technologies that have been well received within the marine sector. The event is always held in Europe. Rodrigo Pérez, from SENER’s Marine Department, presented the article ‘Learning Curve and ROI in the Implementation of a CAD System in a Generic Shipbuilding Environment’. The article provides an analysis of the FORAN system learning curve in a generic shipyard.

UK Ocean Technologies Expo Biggest Yet

Ocean Business 2013 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton will welcome 300+ worldwide companies to its upcomeng show. One of the most exciting elements of the show is that visitors can actually see equipment in action and ‘test-drive’ products before they purchase. This year’s Ocean Business is running an unmissable programme of free training and demonstrations, running over 180 hours where leading companies will introduce new products, technologies and techniques. NSRP Solicits White Papers

The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has issued a solicitation for panel white papers. Additionally, the Panel Project Guide, which contains details on the white paper review and selection process, contracting requirements  and formatting guidelines, has been updated to correspond with this solicitation. The deadline for Panel Chairs to submit to SCRA those white papers which have been reviewed and selected by their respective panels is Friday, January 27, 2012. NSRP Approves $1.4m in Shipbuilding Program Funds

As part of the National Shipbuilding Research Program’s (NSRP) core mission to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and repair, the NSRP Executive Control Board has selected 15 new research and development projects for award, totaling approximately $1.4M. The NSRP Executive Control Board allocates funds on an approximately annual basis to fund a portfolio of relatively small, short timeframe projects - one year or less, $100K or less. The Project Portfolio contains summary information on all current and completed NSRP projects. Matson to Convert Containership

Matson Navigation Company, Inc. (Matson) has begun the first conversion of one of its C-9 containerships, MV Mokihana, to a combination roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) and container vessel to further strengthen its Hawaii service capabilities. With the conversion, the vessel will have ro-ro and container capacity comparable to two vessels in Matson's service today, the dedicated ro-ro vessel Great Land and the containership S.S. Lihue. The new garage will have the capacity to carry 1,350 vehicles. The plan is part of a multi-phase program that began in 2003 and is designed to provide Matson's auto customers with the two service features they prefer: frequency of service and ro-ro capacity.

New Warships Will Transform U.S. Navy
