Two Container Giants Visits Austalian Port

Two of the largest-capacity container ships to ever visit Australia are making calls to the Fremantle Inner Harbour this month.The first one, Maersk Skarstind, has already arrived in Fremantle. Skandi Captain's Maiden Visit to Lowestoft

Pilbara Ports Authority Shortlists Two for Port Hedland Expansion

Australia's Pilbara Ports Authority has short-listed two respondents interested in investing to build and operate a new general cargo facility at the Port of Port Hedland.Located at Lumsden Point, at the south eastern end of the inner harbour, the development can accommodate a logistics hub, general cargo wharves and cargo lay down areas.Environmental approval for the development was obtained in 2014 and Pilbara Ports Authority has since invested more than $80 million in land remediation, dredging and reclamation works at Lumsden Point.Pilbara Ports Authority has consulted with The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) and…

ABP, Peterson Sign Pact

The logistics and service provider to the offshore energy industry Peterson UK Limited has concluded a new long-term agreement with Associated British Ports Holdings (ABP) to establish a new operational and logistics base to the Port of Lowestoft.ABP, which owns and operates 21 ports in the United Kingdom, said that the new agreement will see Peterson operate a wide range of warehouse, cargo and logistic services from the port, including fuel bunkering to support the oil & gas and renewable energy sectors being supplied from their Lowestoft Supply Base.Paul Smith, Peterson Business Manager East of England, said: “We are delighted to establish a new operations base in the Port of Lowestoft.

India to Roll-out USD 156 mln Vizag Port Projects

Nitin Gadkari, Indian Minister of Shipping will inaugurate five port projects worth INR  1062 Crores (USD 156 mln ) in Vishakhapatnam today (Friday). The projects to be inaugurated include upgradation of existing iron ore handling facility at Outer Harbour of Vizag Port. This would involve modernising and upgrading the 40 year old iron ore handling facility so that it can handle larger vessels of 2 lakh DWT with loading rate of 8000 MT/hour. Capacity enhancement would be to 16.20 MTPA from 12.50 MTPA. The work was awarded to M/s.ESSAR Vizag Terminals Ltd on DBFOT basis with revenue share of 31% on 14.5.2015 is was completed on 31.5.2018. The other projects to be inaugurated include Development Berths at the inner harbour of the port and Post Panamax Quay Cranes.

Color Line, Ulstein ink hybrid vessel Deal

It has now been decided that Ulstein Verft will be constructing Color Line’s new hybrid vessel. The environmentally sound ship will be servicing Sandefjord – Strømstad from summer 2019. Ulstein won the contract in competition with several other yards. “It is very gratifying that the Norwegian shipbuilding industry has proven its competitiveness internationally, and that Color Line contributes to the further development of the Norwegian maritime industry,” says CEO Trond Kleivdal at Color Line. “We are very pleased that Color Line decided to proceed from a Letter of Intent to a firm contract on the construction of this hybrid vessel. This is an important milestone for us, and we are looking forward to the further cooperation with Color Line”, states CEO Gunvor Ulstein at Ulstein Group.

Lerwick Port Launches Latest VMS

Lerwick Port Authority have inaugurated a new Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) which utilises the latest technology to improve the handling of ship movements at the busy Shetland port. Transas, a world-leader in providing harmonised integrated solutions to the maritime industry, has installed the system across four sites covering the port area – port control in the main building and three remote stations, at Rova Head north of Lerwick and Maryfield and Kirkabister, on the island of Bressay, monitoring the northern approaches, inner harbour and southern approaches, respectively. Fibre and microwave links supply data back to port control. The completion was marked on Friday 19 August, 2016 with invitations extended to port users to view the new system.

WILCO Logistics Bags Townsville Port Safety Works

WILCO Logistics Pty Ltd has been announced as the successful bid contractor on Breakwater safety works at the Port of Townsville. Minister for Ports Mark Bailey said the overall $1.5 million project will improve navigational safety at the Townsville Port by widening the entrance to the harbour, but does not involve any capital dredging works. “This project is another step towards being able to accommodate larger vessels at the Townsville Port and will also improve the navigational safety of vessels already entering our harbour,” he said. “Best of all, local North Queensland contractors will once again be engaged to complete important infrastructure improvement works, meaning more local jobs for this community.

Transas VMS for Lerwick Harbor

Transas signed a contract with Lerwick Port Authority to install a new Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) to cover Lerwick Harbour, in Shetland. The new Transas system is required to replace Lerwick Harbour’s existing system. Lerwick is a major commercial port in Britain, strategically situated at the crossroads of the North Sea and North-East Atlantic. Handling more than 5,000 vessel arrivals, totalling over 12,000,000 gross tonnes, annually, the deep-water port’s users include fishing, oil and gas support, cargo, sailing, ferries and cruises. BHP Billiton Injects $240m into Port Hedland

BHP Billiton has approved $240 million (BHP Billiton share) to purchase six additional tugs and construct a new eight pen Tug Harbour at Hunt Point in the Port Hedland Port. The investment will also include the upgrade of workshop facilities, operational and service berths and two small boat moorings at the existing Nelson Point Tug Harbour. BHP Billiton Iron Ore President, Jimmy Wilson, said, “The project will mitigate the risk of a channel blockage by ensuring the continued safe escort of vessels in and out of the Port Hedland Inner Harbour. The new Tug Harbour improves upon previous designs with the facility requiring minimal dredging and marine-based infrastructure and having less environmental and visual impact.

Essar Ports Acquires Vizag Port's Iron Ore Complex

Essar Ports Ltd. (EPL) today announced the taking over of Vishakhapatnam Port Trust’s (VPT) Iron Ore Handling Complex on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis, for a period of 30 years. Essar Vizag Terminals Ltd. (EVTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of EPL, will comprise three berths (two outer harbour berths and one inner harbour berth) with a combined capacity of 23 Million Tonnes per Annum (MTPA) which will be developed in two phases. “Enhancing the cargo handling capacity and mechanization of port facilities for efficient management is crucial for long term sustenance. We are very sure that Essar will develop the OHC facility with latest state-of art handling facilities and achieve higher loading rate thereby reducing the overall turn around by at least 50%”- M.T.

Australian Ports on Tropical Cyclone Alert

The ports of Port Hedland, Broome and Dampier have advised of precautions being taken in light of a Tropical Low which is expected to develop into a Tropical Cyclone last night. The Tropical Low is positioned just east of Derby and tracking WSW'ly towards the coast. The low is now expected to move over open water and develop into a Tropical Cyclone later tonight, before tracking parallel to the Pilbara coast during Tuesday (20 January). Port Hedland's Harbour Master advises that the port will commence anchorage evacuation this morning and inner harbour evacuations this afternoon following scheduled sailings on the morning high tide. Terminals are to liaise with PPA to identify vessels that will cease cargo and require re-berthing after all clear.

Update from Cyclone Hit Indian Ports

Two ports on the Eastern Coast of India that suffered extensive damage from the Hudhud cyclone have provided a status update. Yesterday night port declared the impact of cyclone HudHud as  ‘force majeure’. As a very preliminary assessment of the port, “Hudhud” has caused extensive damage to Port infrastructure, including conveyor system, storage sheds, and other storage areas. The extent of damage will only be assessed and estimated in due course. Further, at this preliminary stage, it is apprehended that it may take around four weeks or more for Port operations to begin in a phased manner, though port indicating they will endeavor with best efforts to resume Port operations as early as possible.

Port of Mumbai: Monsoon Season & Availability of Anchorages

The foul weather season has been declared from May 25 to August 31, in the Port of Mumbai. During this period, the anchorage area of the [Mumbai] inner harbour is restricted to a line, which is normally north of the Sunk Rock Light House position. Hence, the number of anchorages that can be utilized would be restricted due to non-availability of anchorages to the south of this line. There is a possibility that A-3 anchorage also may not be available. Mumbai Port Trust will try and accommodate as many vessels as possible but may have to deny anchorage facilities due to non-availability of anchorage berths. Kiel-Canal Closed Due to Collision

Due to a collision of two vessels at Brunsbttel on the western end of Kiel-Canal between siding Kudensee and Brunsbüttel Innerharbour, the Kiel-Canal has been closed since 3:45 a.m. local time October 28 . Salvage operation are ordered, and westbound vessels presently inside the Kiel-Canal are stopped. The period of closure is presently unknown. gac.com

Middle East Port of Aden Invites Consultancy Bids

The Ministry of Transport and Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation (Port of Aden) invites  qualified consultants companies/firms to express their interest in participation by putting forward their names with the necessary documents to confirm their competence. Aden is described as “Yemen’s Gateway to the World”. To handle the world’s largest container vessels, the Aden Container Terminal (ACT) at the North Shore of Aden’s Inner Harbour was designed and built. This facility was commissioned in March 1999 and provides the port with world-class container handling facilities. ACT’s throughput reached 500,000 TEU’s/year in 2008 and is forecast to grow significantly in future.

New Facility to Boost Trade in Falmouth

From early April ships visiting the Port of Falmouth will be able to use a brand new service to receive and recycle oil slops, thanks to a joint venture between ship-repair and conversion specialist A&P Falmouth and marine oil terminal operators, Falmouth Oil Services (FOS). The new facility is set to boost trade in the port, providing a valuable service to ships using the busy shipping lanes of the English Channel as well as facilitating faster turnaround on vessels in dry dock which require tank emptying and washout before entering the port. At the moment ships requiring similar facilities have to go to Rotterdam or Le Havre, but this new venture effectively makes Falmouth a ‘one-stop’ port for shipping.

VPT Attracts Panamax Vessels

The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), which is continuing its supremacy over other ports in cargo handling, is attracting a large number of Panamax vessels after the first phase of deepening in Outer Harbour. The VPT, which was handling vessels with 195 metres LOA (length over all) and 10.21 m draft till recently, has attained the capability to handle Panamax vessels of 230 m LOA, 32.5 m beam and 0.7 m. draft with progress in completion of Inner Harbour deepening. The port is catering to Panamax vessels with 11 m draft. It will have night navigation for Suez max tankers calling at Outer Harbour shortly, once it is widened further. The VPT has undertaken work on augmenting its capacity by deepening the channels in the second half of 2005-06.

Port of Aden Takes Delivery of New Tug

The Yemen Port Authority fleet at Aden have taken delivery of bollard pull Tug “Wadi Hassan” built by Damen Shipyard in The Netherlands. Each of the Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs has two propellers that can rotate through 360 degrees to give tremendous manoeuvring ability ahead, astern and sideways. This tug, and her sister vessel “Wadi Hateeb” due to complete trials in Holland next week, are an important addition to Aden’s towing capacity. The numbers of tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and other vessels calling at the port has more than doubled since 1995 and the total tonnage of ships calling has trebled over the same time. Towage capacity was becoming a limiting factor at the port.

Search and Rescue Boat Passes Rollover Test

MetalCraft Marine Inc. has successfully completed the key rollover test on the first of a series of new severe service search and rescue boats for the Canadian Coast Guard. The 47-ft. Motor Life Boat (MLB) construction program is a joint venture between MetalCraft of Kingston, and MIL Systems of Ottawa. The initial contract is for seven of the $1.8 million vessels. A key feature of the MLB is the fact it's self-righting, meaning it can be rolled over by extreme conditions, and resurface to continue the search and rescue mission. The test was conducted in MetalCraft's basin on Kingston's Inner Harbour. To roll the vessel over, slings from a crane were run under the boat and attached to lifting eyes on the starboard side…
