WinGD to Deliver Ammonia Engines in 2025
Swiss marine power company WinGD is on track to deliver its first X-DF-A dual-fuel ammonia engines by the first quarter of 2025, with the first X-DF-A powered vessels in service from 2026.The confirmation follows combustion tests at WinGD research facilities in December 2022 and is backed by concrete orders. Shell Marine has introduced a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil specifically for use with engines running on 0.5% sulphur content very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) ahead of the IMO sulphur cap 2020.With a Base Number of 40, Shell Alexia 40 has been developed to optimise equipment performance and condition as ship owners and charterers prepare for the International Maritime Organizationâs (IMOâs) 0.50% global sulphur limit for marine fuels in 2020.Shell Marine expects most of the worldâs shipping fleet will aim to comply with IMO 2020 by switching to fuels with a sulphur content of 0.5% and below.âShell Marine can help ship owners and charterers be prepared as the world moves to a low emissions future.
Marine-i Supports Robotic Arm Ambition
Marine-i has made a grant award to a marine tech company Submarine Technology Ltd (STL) to focus on designing and building a futuristic robotic arm.The arm is a ship-based multi-axis robotic arm and will form an integral part of a new Autonomous Synchronised Stabilised Platform (ASSP) to enable intervention tasks to be carried from Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASV).Submarine Technology Ltd (STL) is based on the Isle of Wight but recently opened an office in Penryn to develop the device, which it hopes will transform autonomous marine operations. Marine-i is a European Regional Development Fund funded programme set up to boost marine innovation in Cornwall."Typical intervention tasks will include equipment transfer and payload management, survey and inspection, launch and recovery.

LR Presents CES Descriptive Notes to China Smart Ship
Great Intelligence, the first China smart ship, was presented with Lloyd's Register (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive notes. Great Intelligence was designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and built at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Co., Ltd (GWS), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Along with LR, System Engineering research Institute (SERI) and China Class Society (CCS) were also involved in this project. Great Intelligence, a 38,800 dwt modified version of the Green Dolphin fuel-efficient Bulk Carrier concept, is the pilot smart ship project within China. LRâs latest CES descriptive notes will be assigned to the project and the latest requirements are applied to this ship.
Shell Launches New Trunk Piston Engine Oils
Shell Marine has unveiled its next generation Shell Argina and Shell Gadinia trunk piston oils for the medium-speed engine market. As owners face pressures to shift toward cleaner fuels that address emissions regulations, Shell said demand for distillates and low-sulphur heavy fuel oil will only increase as shipping approaches a global fuel sulphur content cap of 0.5 percent, imposed by IMO from 2020. Already, dual-fuel engines are taking an increasing share of the medium speed market.
Dellner to Launch Heavy Duty SKD Disc Brakes
Dellner Brakes AB said it will introduce two new heavy-duty disc brakes to its SKD range that, through a new modular design, are set to deliver more choice and stopping power for large industrial, marine and offshore applications. The new brakes will be launched at Nor-shipping in Oslo, taking place from May 30 to June 2. Designed for stopping rotary motion and statically holding load in large marine vessels and industrial machinery, Dellnerâs new SKD 140 brake delivers braking force of up to 258 kN through two brake housings, each containing a powerful hydraulic piston.
Irving Shipbuilding Invests in Ocean Technology Programs
Irving Shipbuilding Inc. said it has made a multimillion dollar investment to support marine innovation and commercialization in Nova Scotia and across Canada. The shipbuilder is investing $4.52 million in the newly established Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE), an ocean innovation centre to be located on the waterfront in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The investment over the next five years represents the largest private sector contribution COVE has received to date. At COVE, ocean science research, start-ups, R&D-intensive companies, industry and Nova Scotia post-secondary institutions will work together to create a cluster of marine innovation and commercialization, and become global leaders.

IRClass Unveils IR-HULL Software
IRClass, the Indian classification society, today announced the release of its new technical software, IR-HULL. IR-HULL was developed by IRClass specifically to verify all aspects of ship design compliance to its established Rules and Regulations for the Construction and Classification of Steel Ships. The new IR-HULL software analyses global strength (including both longitudinal and buckling strength) and local scantling for all panels and stiffeners in a vesselâs hull section. Shell Offers Smooth Transition to ECAs
The shipping world has been settling down to new restrictions on sulphur content in fuel, introduced after January 1, 2015 in ECAs. Ships in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, and waters 200 nautical miles from the coast of U.S. and Canada now need to operate on fuels with a maximum 0.1 percent sulphur content. MPA, ClassNK Ink MoU On Ship Safety
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and ship classification society ClassNK, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance ship safety and environmental sustainability. "With the MOU, the first to be established between MPA and ClassNK, both parties will collaborate on maritime technologies research and development (R&D) project and conduct conferences and workshops," MPA Chief Executive, Andrew Tan said. In addition, there will also be a focus on marine renewable energy which will cover tidal energy generation, energy storage systems and bio-fouling studies. âWe are happy to partner ClassNK on this important initiative to jointly develop innovative solutions and tools addressing ship safety, emission control and marine renewable energy,â said Andrew.

Kongsberg Simulators for Maersk Training Center
Kongsberg Maritime is providing maritime simulators for Maersk's new State-of-the-art drilling operations and offcshore training facility. Kongsberg Maritime simulators have been selected for the forthcoming MOSAIC 2 facility (Maersk Offshore Simulation and Innovation Centre) at Maersk Training in Svendborg, Denmark. Building officially commenced on the state-of-the-art new facility on the Maersk Training campus on 29th November 2011. A frame agreement signed by Kongsberg Maritime and Maersk Training on December 12th 2011 covers delivery of a range of simulators and ongoing support that will act as the platform for high quality offshore drilling operations training at MOSAIC 2.
