DFDS Commits to Battery-electric Vessels on the English Channel

Making Hydrogen Work: Demo Project in San Francisco Port

Hornblower Energy LLC, in partnership with the Port of San Franciso, the U.S. Department of Energy and six corporate partners, including Air Liquide and Glosten, is leading a project to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of using hydrogen (H2) as a maritime fuel.The project is located at Pier 68 in San Francisco. DOE selected the project for funding in 2020. It’s supposed to be completed in 2025 but there are important decision dates before then. So far, project activities have concentrated on planning and modeling.

ABS, Crowley Advance Augmented Reality Technology

U.S. shipping company Crowley and classification society ABS have entered an agreement to jointly explore how to advance the use of augmented and virtual reality technologies for vessels and other marine environments.The ABS partnership agreement builds on Crowley’s new service network using augmented reality on select vessels. Nigeria to Build its First FLNG Unit

Nigerian company UTM Offshore has signed a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the development of an FLNG facility in Nigeria with JGC Corporation, Technip Energies, and KBR.This will be Nigeria's first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility. Africa currently has two FLNG units in operation, the Hili Episeyo in Cameroon, and, as of recently, the Coral Sul FLNG in Mozambique. IMO Biofouling Project Aims to Reduce Invasive Species and Emissions

A newly signed initiative is set to provide pilot projects to demonstrate technical solutions for biofouling management in developing countries, address the transfer of invasive aquatic species and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.The TEST (Transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies) Biofouling Project will run for four years (2022-2025), following an agreement signed on December 8 by International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).

Gaslog Inks Maintenance Deal with Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä’s Optimized Maintenance Agreement has been selected by Greek shipowner and operator Gaslog to cover 10 of the company’s very large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier vessels. The agreement, signed in June 2021, is designed to ensure certainty of operations with budgeted maintenance costs, Wärtsilä said.The tailored agreement covers the vessels’ twin two-stroke dual-fuel main engines, enabling them to benefit from condition monitoring and asset diagnostic services, including Wärtsilä’s Expert Insight solution and remote operational support capabilities.

Fincantieri Floats Out MSC Seashore

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri announced Thursday it has floated out the new cruise ship MSC Seashore at its shipyard in Monfalcone. The vessel has been moved to a wet dock where interior outfitting work will continue until delivery to MSC Cruises in July 2021.MSC Seashore, which will be MSC Cruises’ longest ship at 339 metres and the largest and most innovative ever built in Italy, is the third of four vessels in MSC Cruises’ Seaside class, following MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview launched in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

SGRE Powers Google in Sweden

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has secured an order to supply its turbines for a 254MW wind farm in Sweden that will power Google’s Hamina data centre in Finland.The Stavro wind farm, SGRE's largest ever onshore wind order in Sweden,  will use 62 turbines with a 4.1MW rating. It is expected online by the end of 2021.Stavro is located in the northern part of Sweden, northwest of Umeå, and divided into two sub-sites: Blodrotberget, with 40 turbines, and Blackfjället, with 22 turbines.Commissioning of the wind farm is scheduled for the end of 2021 and the project will be covered by a 30-year service agreement also delivered by SGRE.

Eni-led Group to Build Wave Power Stations

Italian oil group Eni is joining forces with shipbuilder Fincantieri, power grid group Terna and state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) to develop wave power stations.The agreement, which follows the understanding signed last 19 April, will launch the first phase of a joint project to convert the Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter (ISWEC) pilot project, an innovative system that transforms energy generated by waves into electricity, into an industrial scale power station, making its application and use immediately available.The partnership agreement will focus on two phases: during the first phase, the companies will develop a business model and define a deployment plan for Italy.

Cargill, Rainmaking, DNV GL Advance in CO2 Challenge

The CO2 Challenge was hitting its stride and moving into the second stage, the project partners Cargill, Rainmaking and DNV GL announced.The CO2 challenge looks to find and scale technologies capable of reducing vessel greenhouse gas emissions by ten per cent.The first in-person meetings with start-ups providing innovative technologies were conducted at the DNV GL stand at the SMM trade fair yesterday (September 05).“We’ve had a positive response to the CO2 challenge,” said George Wells, Global Head of Assets and Structuring at Cargill.George added: “We have the opportunity to meet some of the start-ups in person at SMM in Hamburg and we are impressed with the technologies and new ideas. The International Windship Association (IWSA) has announced the shortlist, selected by shipping industry experts, for the inaugural Wind Propulsion Innovation Awards 2016 and voting is now open to everyone to select the winners in three categories – Innovation, Technology User and Research. Singapore Offers Funding to Build LNG Vessels

The Port of Singapore, regarded as a leading bunkering hub, is poised to expand its offering of marine fuel solutions to include LNG. In line with these efforts, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has taken another step toward the planned 2017 launch of the LNG Bunkering Pilot Program (LBPP) which aims to establish Singapore as a key LNG bunkering hub in Asia. The Port of Singapore is inviting interested companies to tap on a S$12 million fund, from the MPA's "Maritime Innovation & Technology Fund" (MINT Fund), for the building of LNG-fuelled vessels.

Belfast Harbour Goes Live With KleinPort

Saab has commissioned its first Port Management Information System in the UK. As of September 1st, 2015, Belfast Harbour Commission commenced live operations with its KleinPort system. The Harbour is using KleinPort to manage and track its vessel operations and services, record cargo data, generate billing and execute data analysis and reporting. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has begun a new era, as Rear Adm. Mathias W. Winter-a decorated aviator with advanced degrees in both computer science and national resource strategy-was sworn in as the chief of naval research (CNR).
