Singapore Announces Maritime Scholarship Awards

At an award ceremony in Singapore this week, 60 MaritimeONE Scholarships and seven Tripartite Maritime Scholarships (TMSS) were presented, sponsored by 34 partners from industry, foundations, and unions.The number surpassed last year’s award of 54 scholarships by 27 partners. More companies have come onboard to support MaritimeONE Scholarships in recent years, reflecting the focus on talent development by Maritime Singapore. SMD on Digitalisation in the Maritime Industry

300 students from Institute of Technical Education, junior colleges, polytechnics, and universities participated in the 6th edition of the Singapore Maritime Dialogue (SMD), which featured a lively panel discussion on the theme of ‘Maritime Singapore in the Age of Digitization’.The group exchanged views on the digital revolution taking place in the maritime industry with invited panelists comprising Guest-of-Honour, Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Transport and Health; Mr John Hahn, CEO and Co-Founder of Ocean Freight Exchange; Mr Richard Koh, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Singapore; and Ms Melissa Kee, Chief Human Resources Officer of Kuok Singapore Ltd.

Singapore Scheme to Tackle Lack of Marine Engineers

Singapore has launched an initiative to attract more locals to take up a career as a marine engineer. The joint venture between unions, government and industry aims to address an acute shortage. A new S$1.2 million Tripartite Engineering Training Award (TETA) Programme was launched by Lim Swee Say, the Minister for Manpower. According to a press release, TETA is a joint initiative by Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU), Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute (e2i). SSA Showcases OSV Sector with OSV@Vivo 'Open House'

OSV@Vivo has been taken to the heart of the Singapore public with an anticipated 4,000 visitors, expected to throng the two state-of-the-art Offshore Support Vessels (OSV) “Pacific Legacy” and “VOS Prince” moored at local shopping mall Vivocity Waterfront Promenade from 21 to 23 April 2016. Local institutes of higher learning are lending their support to this inaugural event with some 600 students from the Institute of Technical Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic already registered to attend. This industry-led project, spearheaded by the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) and held in conjunction with Singapore Maritime Week, is designed to create awareness of the offshore marine sector – a key sector in the Singapore maritime industry.

16 Receive Howe Yoon Chong PSA Scholarship

16 deserving students were awarded with the Howe Yoon Chong PSA Scholarship. Mr Fock Siew Wah, Group Chairman of PSA International (PSA), presented the award certificates to the students at a ceremony held in PSA Building in Singapore today. The bond-free scholarships will pay for tuition and other compulsory fees in full, as well as book and living allowances. The 16 Howe Yoon Chong PSA scholars will be pursuing academic studies at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Polytechnics and local Universities. Since its inception in 2009, the Howe Yoon Chong PSA Scholarship program has made a difference to the lives of over 110 young Singaporeans.

SSA Sponsors Maritime Scholarships

The Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) said it has underlined its commitment to investing in the future of the Singapore and global shipping industry by sponsoring S$50,000 through three scholarships during the 2014/2015 academic year. The scholarships will come under the the MaritimeONE Scholarship Program administered by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and will be offered to students attending the Singapore Management University (SMU) and Singapore Maritime Academy at the Singapore Polytechnic. Applications for MaritimeONE scholarships will be from April 1-May 31, 2014.

Transas Engine Room Simulator for Institute of Technical Education

Transas Marine has installed a Full Mission Engine Room Simulator at Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore. With installation of this simulator, ITE will be able to train students to operate machinery of MAN B&W 60MC Tanker LCC. A broad range of skills, acquired during the course, enables trainees to minimize adaptation time on board and reduce training time at sea.
