River Dance: Grounding Triggers Breakaway Barges

It was a beautiful mid-summer afternoon in the nation’s heartland. The skies were clear, the sun was shining and the variable southwest breeze barely caused a ripple on the muddy water of the winding river. Optimistic fishermen lined the riverbanks and a few recreational boaters were cruising close to the floating docks lining both shores.This tranquil scene on this busy waterway was about to change…and quickly.A parting of the waysAbout a half mile upriver, a 95-foot tug was proceeding southbound on a slow bell with two barges made up end-to-end along her starboard side.

Renewable Energy Insurance Suite Launched

IRCM, have launched a new product 
range aimed at the Renewable Energy Market. Available as both a wholesale and 
retail facility the product suite delivers insurance programmes to the Solar, Wind and 
Wave Sectors and is supported by a panel of Global Insurers and Lloyds underwriters. A comprehensive insurance package for the Biogas Sector is also available on a direct 
only basis. Mark Elcocks, IRCM’s Specialist Risks Manager said “Expanding into the 
Renewables Sector is a logical extension of IRCM’s specialisms. It also forms part 
of our strategy to increase the range of products available on a wholesale basis and 
facilitate market access to brokers wishing to diversify their own portfolios”.

Travelers Develops New Marine Construction Insurance Package

Whether building piers and docks, repairing bridges or retrofitting port facilities, construction contractors experienced in working along the waterfront are in demand. To help construction contractors manage both the marine and non-marine exposures that come with working in and around the water, Travelers has developed the Marine Construction program, an insurance package that combines specialized underwriting, risk mitigation solutions and claim services. “Construction contractors who work around the waterfront face a number of complex risks when managing marine, non-marine and contractual liability exposures,” said Virginia Cameron, Chief Underwriting Officer, Travelers Ocean Marine.
