New Marine Technology: The Hallmark of SMM 2000

The SMM exhibition in Hamburg has once again proven that it is the cradle of marine technology and the grand-daddy of all marine exhibitions. On display in 12 separate halls were more than 1,300 exhibitors from more than 50 countries, launching new products and discussing business with an estimated 37,000 visitors. More telling that sheer numbers, in this case, is the feeling of the exhibition and the ubiquitous marine technology theme. The quality of attendee and exhibitor is always high, but this edition of the bi-annual exhibition seemed especially charged due to the many positives currently running throughout the full spectrum of the maritime market.

Navy Lab Hosts Patent Award Ceremony

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) commander Vice Admiral Phillip M. Balisle USN was the honorary speaker at this year's patent award ceremony at NAVSEA’s Carderock Division in Bethesda. The event recognizes outstanding creativity in science and engineering accomplished by Navy civilian employees of the division. The vice admiral recognized the 1,640 patents awarded to the division since 1940 compared to other government agencies. "I am stunned at the number of patent recipients. Savi Technology and Oneseal to Develop Revolutionary Electronic Bolt Seal

Savi Technology announced at today's opening of the U.S. Maritime Security Expo in New York that they will jointly develop and market a disposable low-cost electronic bolt seal that automatically transmits alerts over radio frequencies when locking mechanisms on cargo containers are tampered with or violated. The new electronic seal will combine EchoPoint, Savi's latest, sixth-generation, active radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, with OneSeal's design and manufacturing skills for high-security locks. The partners plan to introduce a widely affordable product by early next year that will dramatically improve the security and management of cargo containers moving throughout the global supply chain by ship, rail and truck.
