Navy Accepts Delivery of USS Zumwalt

The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of its first Zumwalt-class destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) on April 24 following Combat Systems Activation.The ship will transition to the next phase of developmental and integrated at-sea testing. This event marks a major milestone of the dual delivery approach for USS Zumwalt, which achieved Hull Mechanical & Electrical delivery from shipbuilder General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works in May 2016. Raytheon Anschütz Expands US operations

Raytheon Company announced the launch of its new subsidiary, Raytheon Anschuetz USA LLC, located in San Diego, Calif. According to the company, Raytheon Anschuetz USA LLC aims to reinforce customer care and support for Raytheon Anschütz navigation systems in the United States for commercial ship owners and shipyards as well as government entities, including the Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, Navy and Army. “In January 2012, Raytheon Anschütz returned to the U.S. navigation systems market with the establishment of a San Diego-based regional sales office. Now, we are taking the next step to becoming America’s new center of navigation excellence,” said Frank Christophersen, president of the new subsidiary.

AN/SPY-1 SSSA Completes Critical Design Review

The Critical Design Review (CDR) stage for AN/SPY-1 radar Solid-State Switch Assembly (SSSA)'s high voltage modulator completed Aug. 26, confirming that the design is expected to meet performance requirements. A CDR confirms the system is on track to achieve affordability and cost goals, and establishes the system's initial product baseline. The successful close-out of the CDR milestone means that the SSSA has achieved a high level of maturity, and is ready to start complete hardware design and system testing. SSSA is intended to replace the current vacuum tube modulator switches in the AN/SPY-1 radar transmitter with functionally similar, highly reliable solid-state switches. The AN/SPY-1 radar constitutes the primary air and surface search radar for the AEGIS Weapons System.

MHI's Revamped Showroom Opens at Shinagawa

On August 18 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) opened its newly revamped M's Square showroom located on the second floor of the Shinagawa Head Office Building in Tokyo. The showroom layout has been reorganized into separate areas each introducing the technologies and products of one of its four business domains, following the company's shift to the new domain-based structure this April. A number of new features have also been added, including a spectacular 180-inch multi-display and a "News Archive" where visitors can freely browse news topics relating to the MHI Group. Detailed explanations of MHI's technologies and products are provided in the "Technology Gallery." Here, displays of actual products, models, video presentations, etc.

Raytheon Appoint Vecchiolla Business President

Raytheon says it has appointed Thomas A. Vecchiolla as president, Raytheon International, Inc., effective immediately. In his new role, Vecchiolla will be responsible for leading Raytheon's international business team worldwide. Vecchiolla will report to John Harris, vice president, business development, Raytheon Company, and CEO, Raytheon International, Inc. and will be based in Washington, DC. Raytheon Get US$35-Million Navy LCS Sonar Contract

Raytheon Company says it is to provide the U.S. Navy with AN/AQS-20A minehunting sonar systems and equipment. The system leverages advanced sonar technologies to support the Navy's critical minehunting missions, ensuring safe access and passage for military and civilian vessels on the world's oceans and waterways. Deployed from the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) as the variable depth sonar for the AN/WLD-1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS), the AN/AQS-20A system is towed undersea to scan the water in front, below and to the sides of the vehicle for anti-shipping mines.

STEM $125,000 Scholarships Honors U.S. Navy Legend

Raytheon Company has established the Raytheon – Zumwalt Scholarship, in honor of Admiral Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt, Jr., Chief of Naval Operations (1970 – 1974), and the next-generation multimission destroyer, the DDG 1000 class, which aptly bears the Zumwalt name. Established through the Anchor Scholarship Foundation, Raytheon has funded a $125,000 endowment to support an ongoing program to provide annual scholarships to students pursuing a four-year degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related field. Raytheon to Supply Navy Unmanned Vessel Sonar

Raytheon Company awarded a sub-contract from Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) for its latest medium frequency hull-mounted sonar system. The sub-contract is part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program. According to the U.S. Navy , 43 nations operate more than 600 submarines; the steady increase in undersea vessels makes tracking a challenge. Raytheon's Modular Scalable Sonar System (MS3) will integrate into SAIC's prototype trimaran vessel as the primary search and detection sonar. The systemis designed to provide search, detection, passive-threat filtering, localization and tracking capabilities without requiring human operation.

Adapting Commercial Container Ships to Deliver Emergency Aid

Through the TEMP program, Raytheon is creating an innovative system of modular technologies – including air and sea cargo transport, cargo transfer and onboard support resources – that enable commercial container ships (cargo ships) to support humanitarian aid and other non-combat missions through the use of advanced technology such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Unlike naval ships, commercial vessels are not designed with the capabilities needed for aid missions. Through the TEMP system, alternative vessels such as container ships could be quickly readied to carry out an aid initiative with limited manpower. The system can be deployed in less than a day and is capable of maintaining mission operations for 30 days or more.

Raytheon Delivers US Fleet's First Dual Frequency Sonar

Raytheon Company completed delivery of the electronics for the AN/SQQ-90 tactical sonar suite, the complex sonar for the first ship of the U.S. Navy's DDG 1000-class multimission destroyer. The AN/SQQ-90 tactical sonar suite, the first dual-frequency hull-mounted sonar of the Navy's surface fleet, is a major advancement in undersea warfare capability and will provide broad warfighting coverage to DDG 1000. Raytheon delivered the sonar electronics completely assembled and integrated into an Electronic Modular Enclosure (EME), an innovation to 21st century shipbuilding designed into the Zumwalt-class destroyer program for affordability.

Dr. Fraser Smith of Raytheon is the President of Raytheon Sarcos, part of Raytheon’s Integrated Defense Systems business. He’s also the chief proponent of a new technology that could revolutionize how shipyards move, store and retrieve bulky, awkward and heavy materials. Raytheon is actively marketing the robotic device now and looking to find follow-on funding to make the product commercially viable. Based on their early findings and performance, they are well on their way to doing just that.

New Navy Contracts

Maersk Line, Ltd, Norfolk, Va., is being awarded an $8,630,000 firm-fixed-price contract for a nine-month time charter of tanker MT Samho Moonstone, currently a foreign-flag vessel, which will be re-named and U.S.-flagged upon delivery to the government. The ship's primary mission is to move petroleum for the Department of Defense between ports in the Far East. This contract includes one 30-day option which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $9,500,000. Work is expected to commence May 2010 and is expected to be completed within 270 calendar days or, if all options are exercised, within 300 calendar days. The contract is expected to be funded in fiscal year 2010 and funds will not expire at the end of the fiscal year.

New Navy Contracts

Raytheon Co., Integrated Defense Systems, Tewksbury, Mass., is being awarded a $27,828,683 not-to-exceed modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-05-C-5346) for common display system (CDS) hardware and software integration with the Integrated Bridge Console and Distributed Control Workstation hardware in support of shipyard hull mechanical and electrical activation. The purpose of this modification is to incorporate the CDS hardware and software integration related changes in support of DDG 1000 program ship activation activities in the 2011 timeframe. These integration efforts represent changes to the current requirements of total ship computing environment software development.

Raytheon Co., Integrated Defense Systems, Tewksbury, Mass., is being awarded a $217,000,000 cost plus fixed fee modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-05-C-5346) for the procurement of two Volume Search Radar (VSR) for the Zumwalt Class Destroyer Program and USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).  Work will be performed in Moorestown, N.J. (95 percent) and Sudbury, Mass. (5 percent), and is to be completed by March 2013.  Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C. is the contracting activity.

New Navy Contracts

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Inc., Newport News, Va., is being awarded a $6,000,000 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-08-C-2100) for the accomplishment of the fiscal year 2008 Extended Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA) of USS Enterprise (CVN 65). EDSRAs are similar to overhauls in that they restore the ship, including all subsystems that affect combat capability and safety, to established performance standards. Additionally, an EDSRA provides an opportunity to perform hull inspections, recoating and other maintenance related evolutions below the waterline that cannot be accomplished while the ship is waterborne.

Raytheon Co., Integrated Defense Systems, San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $36,253,351 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-10-C-2205) to exercise an option for life cycle engineering and support services for LPD 17 class integrated shipboard electronic systems.  Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif. (95 percent); Chula Vista, Calif. (3 percent); and Norfolk, Va. (2 percent).  Work is expected to be completed by December 2010.  Contract funds in the amount of $478,276 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

Raytheon Advances Ship Computing

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) achieved another in a series of milestones for the Zumwalt-class destroyer program with the successful Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE) Release 6 software specifications review. Zumwalt’s TSCE is an advanced, open systems architecture that provides a scalable platform for cost-efficient delivery of new mission capability while capitalizing on the reuse of millions of lines of code from existing Navy programs. The system delivers a new level of Mission Systems Integration and automation. As such, it is a primary driver for the 60 percent reduction in manning for the Zumwalt-class destroyer versus the requirement for today’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
