Volvo Penta Unveils Its IPS Professional Platform

Volvo Penta has unveiled IPS Professional Platform, its new propulsion offering for superyachts and commercial marine vessels, slated for commercial availability from 2025.Volvo Penta said the new fully integrated helm-to-propeller solution builds on its proven Inboard Performance System (IPS) and Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) technology with enhancements for larger vessels.The flexible platform enables a vessel to have up to eight power sources, and includes matched software, services and support, all integrated via the company’s proprietary EVC technology.

First Chinese Hull Monitoring System Gains Type Approval

China Classification Society (CCS) has awarded type approval to the nation’s first domestic hull monitoring system.The approval was issued to the China Ship Scientific Research Center located in Wuxi. Hong Kong-headquartered shipping company Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) welcomed to its fleet its first 24,188 TEU mega vessel, OOCL Spain, officially named at a ceremony held Thursday at Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. China Launches Unmanned Ship Design Center

China has built its first research and development test base for autonomous ships in the southern coastal city of Zhuhai next to Macao, state-owned newspaper Economic Daily reported.The test base named Xiangshan Marine Scientific & Technological Port is located in Zhuhai, Guangdong province. ASI Marine Adds Falcon ROV

Canada-based underwater services provider ASI Marine is expanding its Falcon fleet, said a press release from Saab Seaeye, the underwater e-robotics company.Known for being the first to ingeniously exploit the Saab Seaeye Falcon’s adaptive intelligent technology by sending the 300 metre rated remotely operated underwater vehicle on a five kilometre long tunnel inspection, the company is now adding the 1000 metre rated Falcon version to their Falcon collection.The acquisition extends ASI Marine’s overall ROV fleet, providing inspection, survey and diving services for inland underwater infrastructures internationally.Bob Clarke, manager of ROV services at ASI Marine…

LR Presents CES Descriptive Notes to China Smart Ship

Great Intelligence, the first China smart ship, was presented with Lloyd's Register (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive notes. Great Intelligence was designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and built at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Co., Ltd (GWS), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Along with LR, System Engineering research Institute (SERI) and China Class Society (CCS) were also involved in this project. Great Intelligence, a 38,800 dwt modified version of the Green Dolphin fuel-efficient Bulk Carrier concept, is the pilot smart ship project within China. LR’s latest CES descriptive notes will be assigned to the project and the latest requirements are applied to this ship.

Aker Arctic & Navis Engineering Agree DP Collaboration

Aker Arctic Technology Inc and Navis Engineering Oy have signed an agreement on joint development of Dynamic Positioning systems for ice operation. The companies plan to jointly develop next-generation DP-system technology tailored for ice operation by utilizing their core know how and technologies. The development includes improved control algorithms, testing of the systems and utilising new more intelligent technology to overcome the ice challenges. The development work will take place in close co-operation with Aker Arctic Technology in Helsinki and Navis Engineering R&D Centre in St. Petersburg. The joint project aims to provide more energy efficient and capable and safe DP-systems especifically developed for ice operation.
