ContainerPort President and Co-Founder Russel A. Graef Passed Away

ContainerPort Group, Inc. announced today that its President and long-time company veteran, Russel A. Graef, passed away on October 26, 2017. It is with great sorrow that we share the loss of one of the intermodal industry’s founders, pioneers and collaborators. Since CPG’s founding in 1971, Graef held executive positions in all divisions of the business, including terminal operations, sales, logistics, fleet safety, trucking, depot/CY and M&R operations. Fred Hunger, CEO of World Shipping, CPG’s parent company says, “Russ was a true company man focused on ContainerPort Group’s mission: To become intermodal’s best by achieving excellence in all we do.

IANA Introduces Resource Center

The Intermodal Association of North America has created a resource center, available on its website, to provide a wide range of information for prospective intermodal users and those who are new to the industry. The Intermodal Freight Resource Center offers educational tools, industry information, research and other content. The “What is Intermodal” page overviews the industry’s scope and benefits. Additional sections include intermodal network and terminal information, data & statistics, a glossary of industry terms, studies and research and links to organizations that provide related services. “The Intermodal Freight Resource Center is a tool that showcases the viability and value of intermodal service to multiple audiences,” said Joni Casey, president and CEO of IANA.

FMC’s Doyle Addresses Intermodal Hot Topics

Speaking at the Intermodal Association of North America on May 5 in Chicago, U.S. Federal Maritime Commissioner William P. Doyle discussed several of the shipping industry’s hottest topics, including ocean carrier consolidations and alliances, container weight VGM under SOLAS, and chassis. “We’ve all heard the recent announcements related to consolidations, for instance, CGM CGM and NOL-APL; and COSCO and CSCL. “We’ve all heard the announcement that Hapag Lloyd and UASC are in discussions on a possible merger.

U.S. Intermodal Volumes Rose 4.5% in Q1/15

According to a report issued by the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), domestic intermodal volumes rose 4.5 % in the first quarter of 2015, buoyed by domestic containers, which rose 6.5 percent in a quarter-over-quarter comparison. Total intermodal shipments rose 2 percent over last year’s Q1 volumes, despite port congestion issues that impacted international container traffic. “Monthly first quarter results were uneven due to the issues on the West Coast,” said Joni Casey, president and CEO of IANA. Domestic intermodal results were particularly impressive in view of the challenges facing the import sector. A significant share of the freight carried by domestic intermodal is transloaded from 40’ containers that come through a port.

University of North Texas Wins IANA Competition

A student team fielded by the University of North Texas (UNT) won the Intermodal Association of North America’s (IANA) third annual Intermodal Challenge, earning national recognition for their university through IANA’s growing young professionals development program. The first place award was presented to UNT’s Curtis Pogue, Sarah McLaughlin and Chris Turner at the Intermodal Expo in Houston, Texas. Horizon Lines Expands Board of Directors

Board to expand to eleven from eight; seven New Board Members Join Four Existing Directors; Four Directors Retire. Horizon Lines, a domestic ocean shipping company, today announced that it will expand its Board of Directors to 11 members from eight, effective November 25, 2011. In conjunction with the expansion, seven new directors will be appointed and four of the existing eight directors will retire. • Jeffrey A. Brodsky, Kurt M. Cellar, Carol B. Hallett, James LaChance, Steven L. Rubin, Martin Tuchman and David N. Weinstein will join the board as independent directors.

Public Participation Sought in EU Study

In his address to the Intermodal Association of North America, the National Industrial Transportation League, and the Transportation Intermediaries Association during the Super Session, Economic Turmoil in a Sea of Financial Changes, at the 2009 Intermodal Expo and TransComp Exhibition, Chairman Richard A. Lidinsky, Jr. announced further details of the Commission's plans to undertake a comprehensive study of the impact on the U.S. trades as a result of the elimination of shipping conferences by the European Union (EU). Additionally, the Chairman recognized in his remarks that ports, carriers and other maritime interests are impacted by the on-going global economic downturn, and reiterated the Obama Administration's willingness to assist regulated parties in obtaining financial relief.
