The three shipping companies of the Offen Group, CPO Container, CPO Tanker and CPO Bulker, have decided to implement DNV GL’s e-learning course “Energy Efficiency on Board” across their entire fleet. The E-learning tool, developed by DNV GL’s Maritime Academy, enables users to identify potential savings in a simple way and to implement them in ship operation. "As a large modern shipping company, we are always interested in innovative concepts and are constantly working to further extend our high quality standards in all areas," says Dietmar Thiem, Technical Director at CPO Container. The fleet of the Offen Group currently comprises 67 container ships, 8 bulk carriers and 26 tankers.

It seems increasingly unlikely that all shippers will be ready to meet their new verified gross mass obligation in July. What impact will this have on supply chains? Drewry has previously alerted exporters and importers of the lack of progress and the many uncertainties left before they are ready to comply with the mandatory regulation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on container weights, which becomes effective in July 2016. Three months on, we are seeing some progress, but equally it is becoming clear that not all shippers will be ready to comply with the new IMO rule. A poll of 410 customers of booking portal Inttra in October 2015 found that 66% expected “a moderate or major disruption in the industry”.

New lightweight, low profile Triton 1000/3 LP designed specifically to fit into existing yacht tender garages. Triton Submarines (Triton) announced that it will introduce its newest model, the Triton 1000/3 LP (Low Profile) at the 2014 Monaco Yacht show September 24-27. Triton’s model line now includes eleven models configured for two to eight passengers with depth ratings from 1,000 feet (305 meters) to 5,500 feet (1,675 meters) as well as the full ocean depth rated Triton 36000/3. Yacht-based submersibles continue to gain popularity in the yachting community.

In a speech given to the Trans Middle East Conference in Qatar in May, Andrew Kemp, Regional Director EMEA of the freight transport insurance specialist TT Club, called for operators to do more to minimize the causes of incidents resulting in bodily injury, cargo and property damage. Analysis of extensive TT Club data has shown that over 80% of insurance claims related to cargo handling at ports and terminals are the result of operational shortcomings or poor equipment maintenance.

The overwhelming majority of insurance claims analysed by TT Club have showed that costly damages and loss, as well as serious bodily injury can be prevented or significantly minimised by sensible and concerted risk management efforts. American Commercial Lines Inc. (ACL) announced that its Transportation Services Division has been named as one of 42 new members of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Environmental Performance Track program. Membership is awarded to private and public facilities that have a strong record of environmental compliance, set three-year goals for continuous improvements in environmental performance beyond their legal requirements, have internal systems in place to manage their environmental impacts, engage in community outreach, and consistently report results. ACL is the first marine transportation company to obtain membership in the program.

INTTRA, the leading provider of B2B ocean freight services, announced that United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has selected INTTRA as its portal for the management of ocean-going container shipping. The national line of the Arabian Gulf states, UASC is the twelfth carrier to join INTTRA's non-exclusive network, extending INTTRA's reach beyond 40 percent of world container capacity. UASC provides direct liner services between the Arabian Gulf and main ports in Europe, U.S. East Coast, Indian sub-continent, and a full range of ports in Asia. The addition of UASC to INTTRA connects two of the portal's traditionally strongest areas - Asia and Europe - and provides customers with the capability to view both regional and global shipments from one portal.

The North of England P&I club confirmed its emergence as one the world's strongest maritime insurers today (12 September 2003) with publication of its accounts for the 2002/2003 financial year. The A- rated shipping mutual reported another 12 months of solid growth in tonnage, income and reserves. Chairman George Procopiou confirmed in the club's 2003 'Management Report' that entered tonnage at the February 2003 renewal grew by 10% to 43 million GT, with 35 million GT owned and 8 million GT chartered. Gross premium income for all insurance classes rose by 25% in 2002/3 to US$ 133.1 million and the overall free reserve increased by 14.5% to US$ 99.6 million. Most growth came from existing members but Procopiou said the North of England would continue to look for suitable new members.
