What if Shippers Miss Weight Rule Deadline?

It seems increasingly unlikely that all shippers will be ready to meet their new verified gross mass obligation in July. What impact will this have on supply chains? Drewry has previously alerted exporters and importers of the lack of progress and the many uncertainties left before they are ready to comply with the mandatory regulation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) on container weights, which becomes effective in July 2016. Three months on, we are seeing some progress, but equally it is becoming clear that not all shippers will be ready to comply with the new IMO rule. EU-bound Jet Fuel Stays at Sea

Tankers anchored off Europe, extend voyage seeking buyers; outlook dim as imports to the region rise. A jet fuel market in Europe saturated by imports from Asia and the Middle East has forced sellers to keep their oil offshore on tankers or chose longer voyages as they seek out buyers. Jet fuel and diesel stocks in Europe have been steadily building as refineries around the world operate at near-maximum capacity to benefit from a rare run of strong profit margins driven mainly by global gasoline demand. In a sign of the growing pressure, the 90,000 tonne tanker Mindoro anchored for nearly two weeks of the southern coast of England, according to shipping brokers, traders and Reuters ship tracking.

U.S. Port Delay Boost February Air Freight

Global air freight volumes rose 11.7 percent year-on-year in February, driven by the Chinese New Year, the International Air Transport Association said on Wednesday. Freight volumes traditionally increase in the weeks leading up to the holiday, which last year occurred in January, while congestion at U.S. ports also boosted the results. Asia-Pacific carriers saw freight volumes rise 20.8 percent, while North American carriers reported an 8.7 percent rise. "There is also evidence that significant automotive exports from Japan to the US shifted from sea to air," IATA said in its monthly statement on freight volumes. IATA said the growth seen in February would not be repeated, confirming a forecast for freight volumes to rise by between 4 and 5 percent this year.
