Of this amount however, only a small percentage (2-4%) is dredged by dredging companies. As a sector, the dredging industry has extensive expertise in the sustainable extraction of sand…

IADC’s René Kolman: 'Primus inter pares'
The world of dredging is an ever changing and endlessly fascinating niche of the global marine industry, an indispensable activity essential to keeping world commerce flowing. For insight on recent trends we visited last month with René Kolman, Secretary General, International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC), for his take on a world of dredging challenges and opportunities. In true Dutch fashion René Kolman is refreshingly forthright. Kolman assumed the mantle of leadership at IADC more than seven years ago, coming to the post from the landscape and garden trade association business.
Dredging: Digging Deep for a 'WIIN'
In the waning days of 2016, the outlook brightened dramatically for the big U.S. dredging contractors. Just before Congress dispersed for the Holidays, then-President Obama signed a pivotal piece of legislation – the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act, S612. Authorized needed investment in America’s ports, channels, locks, dams, and other infrastructure that supports the maritime and waterways transportation system and provides flood protection. Authorized U.S.
More than Mega: Diversity Defines the Dredging Industry
The mantra of recent times has been the worldwide trend to ‘mega’. Mega container ships created the need for mega ports which required mega dredging projects. These in turn demand mega dredging vessels. All this is true but disregards another development: the consolidation of the major dredging contractors into larger companies with long-term strategies that have resulted in diversification. Today’s major dredging contractors do more than dredge. They are partners in the development of a project.

IADC Authors Award at CEDA Dredging Days
An IADC Best Paper Award for a Young Author under the age of 35 was presented to Bas Borsje at the CEDA Dredging Days in Rotterdam on November 11, 2011, for the paper “Biogeomorphological Interactions on a Nourished Tidal Flat: Lessons Learned from Building with Nature”. Tidal flats are valuable habitats for different plants and animals, but unfortunately the total area of tidal flats is decreasing worldwide owing to various problems such as sea level rise, subsidence by gas extraction and erosion initiated by artificial constructions. Nourishing tidal flats might be a promising solution.
