Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore Names New Chief Executive

Singapore's Ministry of Transport announced that Teo Eng Dih will take over as chief executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), succeeding Quah Ley Hoon, who will step down on September 5, 2022.Teo Eng Dih, currently Deputy Secretary (Policy) of the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF), is responsible for MINDEF’s defense policy and diplomacy, strategic and public communications, and Total Defense. He oversaw the expansion of defense cooperation with international partners and strengthening of collaborations at the ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting (ADMM) platform.

ABS Renews R&D Partnership with Singapore's MPA

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ABS to renew its partnership in maritime research, development and innovation. MPA Honors ABS

ABS has been awarded the Offshore & Marine Engineering Award by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). This award recognizes organizations that have made significant contributions toward the development of Singapore’s offshore and marine engineering sector. “ABS is honored to receive this award recognizing our leading role in Singapore’s marine and offshore industries,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. The MPA award recognizes ABS for its breakthrough work in the areas of innovation, safety, and environmental protection and is an affirmation of the organization’s efforts in developing guidance for environmental and operational performance and advancing safety in new areas, such as cyber safety and big data.

Singapore: Committee to Plan Future of International Maritime Center

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has established the International Maritime Center 2030 (IMC 2030) Advisory Committee to chart the future directions of Singapore’s IMC. Andreas Sohmen-Pao, Chairman of BW Group, has been appointed as the Chairman of this committee. As part of its work, the committee would review Singapore’s IMC development strategy and identify new growth areas to enhance Singapore’s long-term competitiveness and value proposition as an IMC. Globally, Singapore is known as one of the world’s busiest ports and a top bunkering port. Beyond her status as a premier global hub port, Singapore has been ranked by international studies to be a leading IMC.

Mersey Maritime: Small Business at Heart of Isle of Man Partnership

UK Industry trade body Mersey Maritime has announced a new trade agreement with the Isle of Man Shipping Association (IOMSA) which aims to supercharge bilateral trade, particularly among small to medium sized businesses. The agreement was announced at a special reception during the International Festival of Business in Liverpool UK and has resulted from a series of discussions facilitated by the Isle of Man Ship Registry, which is an Executive Club member of Mersey Maritime, and other IoM based companies such as software engineer PDMS, both of which are also involved with IOMSA.

AAL Canada Opens Vancouver Office

Press release - AAL has announced the opening of a new office in Vancouver, Canada. This continues the company’s global expansion strategy, which has, in the same month, seen the opening of AAL Korea. The move strengthens the company’s on-the-ground presence and customer support function in a region experiencing growth and development. AAL is also one of the first global shipping operators established in Vancouver to have benefited from the support of the newly launched Vancouver International Maritime Center (VIMC).

Esben Poulsson, New President for Singapore Shipping Association

The Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) has named Asian shipping veteran Esben Poulsson as its new president, succeeding Evergreen’s Patrick Phoon. “I am honored and humbled to be appointed president of this active and vibrant organization, consisting in excess of 470 member companies,” Poulsson said. "His boundless energy, enthusiasm and sheer passion for our industry is there for all to see and stepping into his shoes will be a huge task for me – albeit he leaves the association in good shape, and ready for the many challenges ahead. It is almost impossible to exaggerate his massive contribution to the SSA over so many years," he added.

Maritime Can Save Nigerian Economy

Nigeria can make twice as much from shipping than what it is currently making from oil, says Olisa Agbakoba, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He said that the country could generate over seven trillion naira per annum from the maritime industry. His law firm Olisa Agbakoba Legal (OAL) has estimated the untapped revenue in the maritime sector at N7trillon if focus on revenue generation from mari­time sector as alternative to oil. Dr Olisa Agbakoba stressed the need to overhaul the outdated government’s policy, institu­tional, regulatory and legal framework. “There is massive untapped revenue in our maritime sector estimated at seven trillion naira per annum,” he said.

Jeppesen Wins IHMS Contract in Singapore

Jeppesen has been awarded a contract to develop and implement an Integrated Hydrographic Management System (IHMS) for the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore, a governmental agency established to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime center, as well as to advance and safeguard Singapore’s strategic maritime interests. The contract is for two years, with an optional three-year extension. The Jeppesen IHMS will provide multiple functionalities, including bathymetric data handling, management and storage integrated with Jeppesen’s dKart Source Management system and dKart Office tools for ENC and paper chart production and maintenance.

Government, Industry Look to Singapore and Asean Shiping

The strength and robustness of shipping both in Singapore and the South East Asian region was put into sharp focus at the Singapore Shipping Association’s 28th Anniversary Gala Dinner, held in the splendour of the West & Central Compass Ballroom at the Resorts World Convention Center in Sentosa. Addressing 1,800 attendees, Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport, said that while the past year had been a challenging one for the shipping industry, the long-term fundamentals for the maritime sector in the region remained strong.

SSA Strengthens its Call for a Unified "Asian Voice"

Singapore will continue its drive to be a leading international maritime center and will work even more closely with countries and shipping associations in the region to realize its goal of creating a unified ‘Asian Voice’ in the shipping industry. Maersk to Add Vessels to Singapore Base

A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S plans to add more ships to its Singapore base after making the city-state its biggest hub after the headquarters in Denmark, Bloomberg reported, stating most of the new vessels will sail under the island-city’s flag. “Capitalizing on its strategic location, sophisticated port facilities and shipyards, Singapore has developed into a premier International Maritime Center where ships hub and essential ancillary services in shipping, commerce and logistics flourish,” according to the website of the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore. Bloomsberg.com reported that Maersk, which owns an oil unit and a port-terminal operator, also has nine drilling rigs registered in Singapore. The port’s location also brings new markets for Maersk.

SCI Goes West

As of July 1, the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) has assumed management of the International Maritime Center in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Last year, the Bay Area Seafarers’ Services (BASS) approached SCI about adding a West Coast resource to the services SCI provides to the world’s mariners. The Executive Committee of SCI’s Board of Trustees will manage the International Maritime Center as it is integrated into the framework of the Institute during this transitional year. Two new SCI employees will operate from the Center, serving all of the commercial ports in the Bay Area—a Senior Chaplain and a Community Relations Coordinator. Each brings knowledge and experience of the Port and the International Maritime Center.

MPA To Set Up MCF

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) will be establishing a Maritime Cluster Fund (MCF) with S$80 million set aside over five years to promote and strengthen the maritime sector in Singapore. The Fund will be used to help companies in the maritime cluster to acquire specialist knowledge and skills and develop their manpower. This will boost Singapore's cluster of high value-added and knowledge-based maritime activities, lower operating costs and improve efficiency of the maritime sector. The Fund will also be used to provide incentives and concessions to container shipping lines to strengthen our transhipment hub. Transport Minister, Yeo Cheow Tong, had announced the setting up of the S$80 million MCF in Parliament earlier today.

HK, U.K. Sign Double Taxation Legislation

Hong Kong signed an agreement with Britain to avoid double taxation on shipping, exempting owners of Hong Kong ships from paying tax levied on cargo taken up in Britain, and vice versa. It was signed in the territory by Hong Kong Secretary for Economic Services Sandra Lee and British Consul-General James Hodge. Lee said at the signing ceremony that the pact strengthened Hong Kong's status as the international maritime center in Asia. "Hong Kong already has double taxation agreements on shipping with our major trading partners, such as the U.S. and mainland China and has also confirmed with the tax authorities of New Zealand and Korea that conditions for reciprocal tax exemption in our laws have been met," Lee said.
