The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Beth Rooney has been named Director of the Port Department, taking over for Sam Ruda who is departing to return to the West Coast.A maritime industry veteran, Rooney will assume the role on May 2 following three years as the ports Deputy Director and more than three decades of experience. She has been with the Port Department since 1993.Together, Ruda and Rooney have led the East Coast’s busiest and largest seaport, and third in the nation behind the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach.

Danny Wan, who has been the Port of Oakland’s interim executive director since July, is now  appointed to that role on a permanent basis.The Port’s governing Board selected Wan, who was was Port Attorney for six years earlier, at a special meeting on November 14. He replaces Chris Lytle who retired in July after six years at the helm in Oakland. Hong Kong-based international transportation and logistics company Orient Overseas International (OOCL) reported an interim net profit of US$138.9 million for the first half of 2019, swinging from a loss of US$10.3 million this time last year.Overall revenue for the company rose 6 per cent to US$3.3 billion in the first half of this year from US$3.1 billion in the same period last year, said a stock exchange announcement from the the parent company of Orient Overseas Container Line.In this period, container shipping industry has been quicker in responding to ever changing demands in its response to the underlying condition of our ever-changing markets and more complicated global economic and trade situations.

As I was preparing for Thanksgiving dinner I put on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. While Indiana Jones and Doctor Elsa Schneider were being chased by the Brotherhood of the Cruciform sword through Venice and their boat was neatly shredded by the propellers of a larger vessel, it had me thinking of how much propeller technology has changed over the years. And how hopefully Indiana’s boat did not actually damage that vessel’s propeller. Recently an article passed though my news feed about the first 3D printed propeller. This is indicative of the direction the industry is taking.

Dry bulk shipper Cargill said it is partnering with four NGOs to advance sustainability initiatives and increase accountability across the ocean shipping industry. The company said it has aligned with the Global Maritime Forum, the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, the North American Environment Protection Association and the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association in an effort to spearhead industry-wide progress toward safer and more efficient international shipping. “The maritime industry must be bold, ambitious and progressive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and marine pollution,” said Jan Dieleman, president of Cargill’s ocean transportation business.

Fatigue is a well known factor as a cause numerous maritime and non-maritime accidents worldwide. In fact driving while fatigued is considered just as bad as driving while under the influence. The requirements under the new Manilla amendments call for vessels and seafarers to log their work or rest hours to meet the standards set out under STCW 2010 or the MLC 2006. Anyone who has ever gone to sea however can tell you that these measures, although a step in the right direction do not necessarily mitigate fatigue anywhere near as well as the IMO and ILO lawmakers expect.
