With the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), which implements MARPOL, United States government agencies continue to prioritize the protection of oceans and waterways from pollution.

DP World Wins Limassol Port Contract

DP World, one of the world's biggest port operators, and the Cypriot logistics and services company GAP Vassilopoulos Public have won two concessions to manage commercial activities at Limassol Port in Cyprus starting in January. P&O Maritime Cyprus, a unit of DP World, won a 15-year concession to exclusively provide port marine services at Limassol. DP World will own 75 per cent of each joint venture, with its Cypriot partner owning the rest. Three contracts on the privatisation of Limassol port services were signed today at the Presidential Palace, marking ‘a new page for Cyprus’ great port’ according to Minister of Transportation Marios Demetriades.

Cyprus Picks Consortiums to Run Limassol Port

Cyprus has announced the names of successful bidders who will undertake three sectors of operations at the eastern Mediterranean island's primary port of Limassol. The first – comprising Germany’s logistics company EuroGate International, Cyprus’s Interorient Navigation Company and East Med Holdings, based in Luxembourg – will run the port’s container terminal. Pressure on Earnings in Container Shipping Industry

The low demand on the high volume trade lanes is surely increasing the pressure on earnings which is already felt in the container shipping industry. This was one of the views that, BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst, Peter Sand shared with the participants at the Maritime Cyprus 2015 Conference as he played an active part as a panellist on the session that focused on the future of the shipping market. “Volume growth on the vital trade lane from Asia to Europe and Asia to US West Coast were down by 4.2% and 2.0% respectively. Whereas demand growth was positive on Asia to US East Coast and on Intra-Asian trade lanes”. Next year the imports into the US East Coast will be even more in the limelight, as the third set of locks in the Panama Canal opens up for business in 2016.

Interorient’s Crew Training Culture Strengthened by Seagull

The Norwegian marine training specialist Seagull is now the sole provider of onboard training systems to the Interorient fleet. Cyprus-headquartered Interorient employs over 300 shore-based employees and more than 1,200 seafarers on around 60 fully managed ships, including a number of predominantly ice class product tankers, containerships, roll-on roll-off  vessels and bulk carriers. The global provider of marine transportation services has used Seagull training modules since 2005, starting with Seagull’s Crew Evaluation System (CES), the computer-based assessment tool which is used to evaluate the knowledge of  seafarers as part of the company’s recruitment and promotion process, and to identify future training requirements.

Norden A/S Selects Veson Nautical's IMOS

Veson Nautical, a provider of maritime commercial management and trading software solutions, today announced that Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S (NASDAQ OMX Copenhagen A/S: DNORD), one of the oldest and most respected listed shipping companies in the world, has purchased Veson Nautical’s Integrated Maritime Operations System (IMOS). Veson Nautical’s IMOS software will now manage chartering, operations, and voyage accounting related functions for NORDEN’s modern fleet of 210 dry cargo and product tanker vessels. “We selected Veson Nautical because IMOS met our expectations for a flexible shipping system that fits well into our business processes,” remarked Sture Freudenreich, Director / Head of IT at NORDEN.
