Interview: Joe Angelo, MD, INTERTANKO

In shipping, there’s little that one can count on from year to year. The word “change” comes to mind immediately. Another constant is a steady hand at the helm at the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO), the voice of the world’s collective tanker market. So, when Joe Angelo replaced long time (10+ years) INTERTANKO stalwart Peter Swift as INTERTANKO Managing Director less than 4 months ago, industry watched closely for any changes in course. But INTERTANKO's new MD is anything but an unknown quantity and he clearly hit the ground running. In April, MarPro caught up with him at his Arlington, VA offices for a SITREP on the world of tankers.

Intertanko Meetings In Athens

INTERTANKO's Executive Committee and Council Autumn Meetings will take place in Athens 24-26 October 2001. In conjunction with the meetings, INTERTANKO will be hosting an Open Market Seminar on Wednesday, 24 October. Consultancy and Research Ltd. will speak on tanker investments. about oil trade developments in the Black Sea and Caspian region and the consequences of the new pipeline from Baku to Ceyhan. Martin Stopford, H. Clarkson & Co. Ltd. will concentrate on strategic issues in the tanker market against the background of recent events. Finn Engelsen jr, Lorentzen & Stemoco will present prospects for the product tanker market and Jarle Hammer, Fearnleys AS will concentrate on trade developments in the tanker market. Erik Ranheim, INTERTANKO, will introduce and moderate the seminar.

Seminar to Focus on Tanker Safety

In conjunction with the autumn meetings of the INTERTANKO Executive Committee and Council, INTERTANKO will be organising an international seminar on Tanker Safety, Pollution Prevention, Spill Response and Compensation. Jayant Abhyankar, International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and INTERTANKO MD, Dr. Peter Swift.

International Seminar To Be Held in Hong Kong

ITOPF, OCIMF and INTERTANKO will be holding a series of meetings in Hong Kong at the beginning of November 2002. These meetings will bring together senior representatives from the world's oil, tanker shipping and marine insurance industries. The three organizations are therefore taking the opportunity to organize a one-day international seminar on Tanker Safety, Pollution Prevention, Spill Response and Compensation, which will be held the same week as the autumn meetings of INTERTANKO's Executive Committee and Council. Maritrans Appoints New CEO, Announces 4Q Results

The Board of Directors of Maritrans Inc. has appointed Philip J. Doherty to chief executive officer effective April 1, 2003. Stephen A. Van Dyck, former chief executive officer, will continue to be employed by the company as chairman of Maritrans Inc. Stephen A. Van Dyck, chairman of the board of directors, commented, "I am proud to have served as the leader of Maritrans and its predecessors for over 28 years. We have achieved a strong reputation with our customers and the confidence of our investors and stakeholders. We have an innovative fleet renewal program and a safety record that has been honored repeatedly by the United States Coast Guard. It is satisfying and exciting to be passing leadership of this respected company to Phil Doherty.

Captain Kertsikoff, Venerable Member of Shipping Industry, Passes

Captain Erric B. Kertsikoff, Vice-Chairman of Intertanko since 1997 and a member of the Executive Committee since 1994, passed suddenly on February 6. Kertsikoff was also Chairman of the Hellenic Forum and an active member of the Association for more than 25 years. Kertsikoff served the Greek and International Shipping Industry for more than 50 years, with dedication and love. According to Intertanko, his personal commitment and contribution was truly outstanding; his enthusiasm and guidance was inspirational, and the leadership and statesmanship he brought had profound importance in shaping the stature and success that the Association enjoys today. Intertanko's managing director, Peter Swift said: "I, along with many colleagues in Intertanko, have personally lost a dear friend and mentor.

International Seminar Attracts a Crowd

Close to 300 delegates joined the International seminar with the theme 'Tanker Safety, Pollution Prevention, Spill Response and Compensation'. Co-hosted by ITOPF, OCIMF and INTERTANKO, the event took place in Hong Kong on 6 November and formed part of a busy week for the three organizations involved, which included the INTERTANKO Executive Committee and Council meetings. Welcoming the delegates, Jan Kopernicki, Vice President of Shell Shipping and Trading and Chairman of OCIMF, outlined the role of OCIMF and current developments in the industry. Important issues that OCIMF had recently been closely associated with were: encouraging the major Classification Societies to bring about transparent change…
