Abu Dhabi celebrated the official commencement of operations of Fujairah Terminals in the East coast of the United Arab Emirates. The U.K. Ministry of Defense has signed a $1.3 billion contract with BAE Systems for equipment to build the next generation of warships for the British navy, Prime Minister David Cameron announced today. BAE Systems has been working on plans to provide Britain with 13 new warships since 2010, Reuters reported, adding that the new contract enables the shipbuilder to continue developing the project by investing in the equipment and facilities needed before building can begin. APM Terminals placed an order for 16 new advanced Rubber-Tire Gantry cranes (RTGs) as part of an ongoing program of upgrading and expanding container handling capabilities and capacities throughout the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network. Twelve of the high-performance RTGs are scheduled for delivery to APM Terminals Algeciras, in Spain, while the remaining four are destined for APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria, with delivery in one year. The container leasing sector experienced another year of stellar growth in 2013 thanks to the continuing weakness of carrier financials, according to Drewry’s recently published Container Leasing report. And Drewry forecasts that this trend will continue. The leased container fleet (teu) expanded 7.3% in 2013, fast outpacing the 2% growth recorded by the fleet owned by transport operators, most of whom are shipping lines. This brought lessors’ share of global inventories to an eight-year high of 46%, which marked a 6 percentage point gain on 2009. “The leasing sector’s fleet growth has outpaced that of owner operators for each of the four years since the worldwide recession of 2009,” said Andrew Foxcroft, author of Drewry’s Container Leasing report.

Eni Norge AS has awarded mechanical engineering group EnerMech a three-year frame agreement to provide lifting and inspection services on the Goliat FPSO project. EnerMech views the Norwegian oil and gas sector as a key growth area for its seven business lines and in 2014 will invest up to NOK 20.4 million (£2 million) in equipment and facilities to expand its market reach. Fugro Voyager, a purpose built DP2 geotechnical drilling vessel, is entering service with Fugro’s Offshore Geotechnical Division to expand its operations in the frontier areas of the Asia Pacific region. Specifically designed and built to address the varied demands of the region’s deepwater markets, the new vessel has several features which will enhance overall productivity, Fugro said. Aberdeen-based subsea services and technology products company Cortez Subsea say they have secured £1.5million of contracts across their range of pipeline installation and decommissioning services following a successful start to Q3 of 2013. The firm has completed the first phase of work on a North Sea FSPO reinforcement programme for contractor DOF Subsea. The £1million contract, for the provision of a powered reel drive system, tensioner and personnel for umbilical and flexible riser installation, includes a second phase which is due to begin later this year.
