Texas Yard Scraps Its First EU-flagged Ship

EMR Group said its International Shipbreaking Ltd (ISL) site in Brownsville, Texas is the first to accept a EU ship to be recycled in the U.S.Using sustainable recycling processes, ISL was able to recycle 97% of the materials removed from MT Wolverine, a 158-meter-long chemical tanker with a carrying capacity of 16,000 tonnes, which prior to being decommissioned, was sailing under the flag of Norway.The project follows a $30 million investment in new equipment and processes at ISL’s Brownsville yard, to meet the requirements of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SSR).

As many maritime markets were challenged by COVID-19, Royal IHC, a Dutch maritime conglomerate and bellwether for the industry, reported its annual numbers indicated the smoke is clearing and a recovery is in sight.2020 will surely go down as a year many inside and out of the maritime industry will want to soon forget, and in releasing its annual figures Royal IHC noted that the first half of 2020 was dominated by refinancing and recapitalization, with COVID-19 having a "major impact" on order intakes throughout 2020.

DP World on Expansion Mode at Southampton

The global port operator DP World said that will invest in four more machines and completely replace its existing fleet with the most modern, fuel efficient and environmentally friendly machines on the market at its Southampton’s container terminal.Two new empty container handlers, delivered at the end of 2018, marked the start of a planned programme of investment and redevelopment at Southampton’s container terminal.The new Hyster machines, which can tandem lift two empty 40ft containers and stack higher than the terminal’s current machines, will enable DP World Southampton to create more capacity in the terminal’s empty park."The new investments will ensure DP World Southampton remains the most productive port in the UK and offer the unique qualities required to enable smarter trade…

Operations Begin at New Fujairah Port

Abu Dhabi celebrated the official commencement of operations of Fujairah Terminals in the East coast of the United Arab Emirates. The announcement came following an official event held at Novotel Fujairah, attended by Sheikh Saleh bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Chairman of the Board of Port of Fujairah, Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports, along with a delegation of Senior Managers, Key Stakeholders and Customers. Earlier this year, Abu Dhabi Ports signed a 35-year concession agreement with the Port of Fujairah, under which "Fujairah Terminals", a new operational arm wholly owned by Abu Dhabi Ports, was established with over AED 1 billion ear-marked for investment in in equipment, and infra and super structure.

Simulation Training at MSRC

In the world of maritime training, MSRC has carved a unique niche in the training of pilots. Founded in 2005, MSRC is a division of the Corporation of Lower St. Lawrence Pilots (CLSLP). The MSRC is a purpose-built simulator with a fully instrumented DNV Class “A” configured bridge with 330° visuals that exceed the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention. MSRC’s Full Mission Simulator (FMS) is one of the most advanced simulators of its type and is continually being upgraded. The Center is also equipped with three fully instrumented ship bridges, with a horizontal view of 240°.

BAE Systems Gets $1.3b for New UK Warships

The U.K. Ministry of Defense has signed a $1.3 billion contract with BAE Systems for equipment to build the next generation of warships for the British navy, Prime Minister David Cameron announced today. BAE Systems has been working on plans to provide Britain with 13 new warships since 2010, Reuters reported, adding that the new contract enables the shipbuilder to continue developing the project by investing in the equipment and facilities needed before building can begin. APM Terminals Furthers Equipment Investment

APM Terminals placed an order for 16 new advanced Rubber-Tire Gantry cranes (RTGs) as part of an ongoing program of upgrading and expanding container handling capabilities and capacities throughout the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network. Twelve of the high-performance RTGs are scheduled for delivery to APM Terminals Algeciras, in Spain, while the remaining four are destined for APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria, with delivery in one year. The new 16-wheeled RTGs, to be manufactured by Konecranes, will offer a lifting capacity of 41 tons, and the ability to maneuver containers into stacks five containers high. Parker Kittiwake Doubles Emissions Analyzer Production

Parker Kittiwake, part of the Parker Hannifin Corporation and the supplier of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) for marine applications, has doubled its manufacturing capacity in direct response to an increase in industry demand ahead of the imminent 2015 ECA deadline. As a result of the increase in orders over the last year, the company has doubled its revenue. Weak Financials Drive Container Leasing Sector - Drewry

The container leasing sector experienced another year of stellar growth in 2013 thanks to the continuing weakness of carrier financials, according to Drewry’s recently published Container Leasing report. And Drewry forecasts that this trend will continue. The leased container fleet (teu) expanded 7.3% in 2013, fast outpacing the 2% growth recorded by the fleet owned by transport operators, most of whom are shipping lines. This brought lessors’ share of global inventories to an eight-year high of 46%, which marked a 6 percentage point gain on 2009. “The leasing sector’s fleet growth has outpaced that of owner operators for each of the four years since the worldwide recession of 2009,” said Andrew Foxcroft, author of Drewry’s Container Leasing report.

EnerMech Secures Eni Norge Lifting Contract

Eni Norge AS has awarded mechanical engineering group EnerMech a three-year frame agreement to provide lifting and inspection services on the Goliat FPSO project. EnerMech views the Norwegian oil and gas sector as a key growth area for its seven business lines and in 2014 will invest up to NOK 20.4 million (£2 million) in equipment and facilities to expand its market reach. The company employs 55 staff in Norway and last year opened a second base in Bergen to complement its long established facility in Stavanger.

Fugro's New Geotechnical Drilling Vessel Begins Operation

Fugro Voyager, a purpose built DP2 geotechnical drilling vessel, is entering service with Fugro’s Offshore Geotechnical Division to expand its operations in the frontier areas of the Asia Pacific region. Specifically designed and built to address the varied demands of the region’s deepwater markets, the new vessel has several features which will enhance overall productivity, Fugro said. At 83 meters by 20 meters, with a twin tower drilling derrick over a centrally located moon pool, the vessel has automated pipe and tool handling equipment to promote safe drilling floor operations.

Cortez Subsea Net Significant Contracts

Aberdeen-based subsea services and technology products company Cortez Subsea say they have secured £1.5million of contracts across their range of pipeline installation and decommissioning services following a successful start to Q3 of 2013. The firm has completed the first phase of work on a North Sea FSPO reinforcement programme for contractor DOF Subsea. The £1million contract, for the provision of a powered reel drive system, tensioner and personnel for umbilical and flexible riser installation, includes a second phase which is due to begin later this year.
