Navico Hires Elgie to Lead Americas Sales

Navico, parent company to marine electronics brands Lowrance, Simrad, B&G and C-MAP, announced today that Jamie Elgie has been appointed to the position of senior vice president and chief operating office of the Americas.In his new role, Elgie will be responsible for all sales, marketing and operations activities for the Lowrance, Simrad, B&G and C-MAP brands throughout North, Central and South America.Elgie came to Navico from Wilson Electronics, a manufacturer and marketer of cellular infrastructure equipment based in Utah, where he served as chief marketing officer.

Hedland Launch Signs with MobileOps

MobileOps, Inc. said it has signed a deal with Australia’s Hedland Launch Service Pty Ltd. The marine services and vessel operator will utilize the MobileOps Platform across its Port Hedland Harbor based fleet to bolster safety, maintenance and regulatory initiatives. The MobileOps Platform is a cloud-based subscription solution that includes both a web application and an offline-capable iPad application called Voyager. “After watching a live demo we were sold within five minutes,” said Ken McCorry, Managing Director at Hedland Launch.

Great Lakes Pilotages Go Live with Saab

The Canadian Great Lakes Pilotage Authority (GLPA) and the Great Lakes Pilotage Division of the U.S. Coast Guard have opened the 2017 shipping season using an upgraded Great Lakes Pilot Management System based on the latest version of Saab’s KleinPilot. The new system went live on schedule with the season opening. It is being used by the two organizations and the U.S. Great Lakes pilotage associations to manage the rostering and dispatch of the more than 100 marine pilots on the Great Lakes and automatically generate billing in accordance with the applicable tariffs.

Refit River Cruiser Sets Sail for Crystal

The newly renovated vessel Mozart, which began passenger service in July 2016, marks Crystal Cruises’ first venture into European river cruising. Before for the revitalized river cruiser Mozart set sail, Crystal Cruises contracted R&M Sea Level Marine to completely renovate all the vessel’s cabins, suites and the reception lobby. The refit took place from April 24 to July 6 in Linz, Austria. Designed by II BY IV Design of Toronto, renovations included completely redesigned accommodations with all new bathrooms and complete renewal of all furniture and finishes.

The increasing automation of vessels is causing some mariners to lose basic maritime skills. During dinner on June 10, 1995, the last night before the cruise ship Royal Majesty was due to arrive in Boston from its voyage to Bermuda, the master bragged to the passengers at his table that his ship could never run aground because it had all the latest electronic equipment, including a navigation system that integrated the GPS signals and other information. At 2225 that night the ship grounded on the Rose and Crown Shoal near Nantucket. It was 17 miles west of its planned trackline.

LR, UK P&I Club Launch Life-Saving Appliances Checklist

Lloyd's Register (LR) and the UK P&I Club have released a Life-Saving Appliances pocket checklist app to help ensure that ship personnel are trained in how to inspect, maintain and operate life-saving equipment, and that equipment is ready for use at all times. The app also includes a list of common deficiencies to help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and help reduce the risk of port state control detentions. The full series of six pocket checklist apps, consisting of: ILO MLC, ISM & ISPS, Marine Fire Safety, Marine Pollution Prevention Port State Inspections, and now Life-Saving Appliances, are all available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

BlueTide Releases app to Manage Wireless Networks

Access Management Portal (AMP) is now available in the Apple app store. BlueTide Communications (BlueTide) has released Access Management Portal (AMP), BlueTide’s second proprietary iOS app, on the Apple app store. AMP allows for control of wireless networks directly from an iPad device. Designed for Ubiquiti WAP management, AMP is like a fuel gauge for bandwidth. With the ability to monitor usage by network, devices in use by WAP or data use by WAP, AMP delivers a real-time snapshot of how bandwidth is used and by whom. To ensure business-critical applications have sufficient bandwidth to perform, AMP enables customers to block and reauthorize devices instantly. This feature disables wireless access to non-critical devices until business operations are completed.

Europe’s commercial marine and workboat exhibition held in a working port, Seawork International, has released its plans for demonstrations, launches and conferences. Organizers say Voith will announce a new marine propulsion system that produces more thrust, reduces noise and vibration, while cutting operating costs. The Smart Surfaces’ Duplex fouling from Tudor Streamline Surfaces will debut at Seawork, which is expected to attract considerable interest from commercial boat operators having been initially developed by the U.S.

'Valeport in Action' Contest Winners Announced

Bringing home the prize for Valeport’s first product in action competition were an image of a Weddell Seal in the Antarctica carrying a Valeport CTD sensor and a hands-on video showing the pilot deployment of a Valeport Midas directional wave recorder at the mouth of the U.K.’s Humber Estuary. U.K.-based Valeport, a designer and manufacturer instrumentation for the oceanographic, hydrographic and hydrometric communities, asked its customers to submit videos and photos of Valeport products in action for a chance to win an iPad Air 2 (video category) and iPad Mini 3 (picture category).
