Navico Hires Elgie to Lead Americas Sales

Navico, parent company to marine electronics brands Lowrance, Simrad, B&G and C-MAP, announced today that Jamie Elgie has been appointed to the position of senior vice president and chief operating office of the Americas.In his new role, Elgie will be responsible for all sales, marketing and operations activities for the Lowrance, Simrad, B&G and C-MAP brands throughout North, Central and South America.Elgie came to Navico from Wilson Electronics, a manufacturer and marketer of cellular infrastructure equipment based in Utah, where he served as chief marketing officer.

New ‘Intelligent’ Power Converters

To operate marine electronics and communication devices, power converters such as inverters, battery chargers and power supplies are often installed to convert available DC or AC to the appropriate power outputs required. Complicating matters, both the power source (DC in varying voltages from battery banks and AC from generators or shore power) and the outputs (voltage, frequency, etc.) can vary for each piece of equipment. So much so, that finding the ideal converter can be difficult and often requires a customized solution.

OW Bunker Launches Free iPhone App

OW Bunker, a supplier and trader of marine fuel, has announced the launch of a free application for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch. This app, the first ever from a bunker supplier and the first for the marine fuel market, currently contains ISO8217-2010 fuel standards data and a fuel calculator, with more features coming soon. It can be downloaded now from Apple’s App store. The app, which complies to ISO8217-2010 standards for residual and distillate marine fuel, features a fuel calculator designed to measure Specific Energy content, the CCAI (Calculated Carbon Aromatic Index) Number, the Viscosity Index and the Volume Correction Factor (VCF). All four calculations are essential for those working with marine fuels.

STX Europe Lego Ship Competition

STX Europe is sponsoring a competition consisting of two series: Innovative and Oasis. In the Innovative series, the aim is to design a cruise ship of the future, keeping in mind the demands of tomorrow, i.e. eco-friendliness and entertainment innovations. The Oasis series challenges the competitors to build a replica of the Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise vessel in the world, currently under construction in STX Europe's shipyard in Turku, Finland. The catch is that participants are to design both of the models using an online design tool provided by LEGO.

InnerSea Discoveries Purchases Two Vessels

InnerSea Discoveries LLC, the Seattle-based parent company of high-end American Safari Cruises, announced the purchase of two vessels for its new small-ship adventure cruising brand, marketed under the same name as the parent company. Designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of young-minded, adventurous and experiential travelers, InnerSea Discoveries will operate at a lower per diem cost and will debut in Alaska’s Inside Passage in May 2011. Formerly owned by Glacier Bay Cruise Line, the 157-ft, 66-guest Wilderness Adventurer was purchased for $201,240, and the 170-ft, 80-guest Wilderness Discoverer was sold for $314,760.
