The Navy awarded five (5) Conceptual Design (CD) contracts for the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)). The contracts based on these requirements will facilitate maturing multiple designs during the 16 months of the Conceptual Design phase, and will allow the Navy to better understand the cost and capability drivers across the various design options. Furthermore, this will inform the final specifications for a full and open competition with a single source award in FY20 for Detail Design and Construction (DD&C) of the FFG(X). The entrance criteria for the Conceptual Design phase is that offerors must have a parent design that has been demonstrated at sea and must already be paired with a domestic shipyard for potential production, which will reduce the necessary development timeline.

Joiner Systems, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, primarily designs, engineers and manufactures accommodation systems for commercial and government ships. USJ-IMECO is an independent provider of turnkey marine joiner, distributed systems and electro-mechanical solutions for government and commercial customers involved in new ship construction and vessel maintenance, repair and overhaul. Headquartered in Crozet, Va. and Iron Mountain, Mich., the company employs approximately 700 people across the United States. USJ and IMECO were acquired by J.F.

Affiliates of USJ-IMECO Holding Company, LLC, a portfolio company of J.F. Lehman & Company (JFLCO), announced the acquisition of Robichaux Automation and Control, Inc. (RAACI). RAACI designs, assembles and integrates electrical, control and automation systems for commercial and government vessels. The company’s core systems and product offerings include a range of proprietary ship control, alarm, monitoring, propulsion, switchboard and power management systems as well as other advanced marine technologies. DMW Marine Group hired Monty Reeder as its Inside Sales Manager and New England, Canada and mid-Atlantic direct Sales Representative. Reeder graduated from Ursinus College with a degree in Business and Economics and previously represented Iron Mountain. Mark Gregory will now be responsible for direct sales in the Southeastern US and Gulf Coast while Bo Weidner will continue to handle the West Coast of the US and Canada. Austal USA, Mobile, Ala., is being awarded a $321,725,461 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-08-C-2217) for the exercise of construction options for Joint High Speed Vessels 8 and 9. The JHSV will provide high speed, shallow draft transportation capability to support the intra-theater maneuver of personnel, supplies, and equipment for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Army. Work will be performed in Mobile, Ala. (48 percent); Pittsfield, Mass. (9 percent); Franklin, Mass. (3 percent); Philadelphia, Pa. (3 percent); Atlanta, Ga. (2 percent); Chicago, Ill. (2 percent); Gulfport, Miss. (2 percent); Slidell, La. (1 percent); Iron Mountain, Mich. (1 percent); Houston, Texas (1 percent); Dallas, Texas (1 percent); Chesapeake, Va. (1 percent); Milwaukee, Wis.

General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, is being awarded a $105,353,508 modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-2303) for long-lead time construction for DDG 1001; long-lead time material for DDG 1002; and engineering and production support services.  Work is expected to be performed in Bath, Maine (52 percent); Parsippany, N.J. (21 percent); Iron Mountain, Mich. (8 percent); York, Pa. (7 percent); Mississauga, Canada (6 percent); Vernon, Conn. (3 percent); and South Portland, Maine (3 percent).  Work is expected to be completed by February 2011.  Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.  The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

On October 18, 2001, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) announced the award of a $406.9 million competitive contract for the detailed design and construction of the lead ship of the T-AKE Auxiliary Cargo and Ammunition Class to National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) of San Diego, Calif. Major subcontractors are IMECO of Iron Mountain, Mich.; Hopeman Brothers Marine Interiors of Waynesboro, Va.; Alstom Power Conversion Inc. of Philadelphia, Pa.; B.F. Eight Power Inc. of Belle Chasse, La.; Lake Shore Inc. Performance Contracting Inc. Scarborough, Maine; and SIPCO of Willis, Texas. Additionally, NAVSEA exercised a contract option in the amount of $301.6 million for the detailed design and construction of the first follow ship.

A new development within the realm of U.S. Shipbuilding — the new Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard (KPSI) is poised to be one of the most efficiently outfitted commercial shipyards in the world. The shipbuilding company, which occupies approximately 114 acres on what used to be the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, utilizes a section of the former Naval yard, which was closed down in 1996 by the U.S. Government due to lack of funds. Further revitalizing this historical landmark, was KPSI's decision to utilize the yard's original drydocks that date back to WWII. Bath Iron Works, Inc., Bath, Maine, is being awarded a $142m cost-reimbursement modification to previously awarded contract for DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class Destroyer additional long lead material and pre-production planning to support detail design and construction. DDG 1000 will provide advanced land attack capability in support of the ground campaign and contribute Naval, Joint, or Combined battle-space dominance in littoral operations. Work will be performed in Bath, Maine (23 percent); Parsippany, N.J. (18 percent); Pittsburgh, Pa. (12 percent); Sanford, Maine (3 percent); Newtown Square, Pa. (3 percent); Brunswick, Ga. The Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus (CSC) co-chaired by Representatives Gene Taylor (D-MS) and Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), met with ship component manufacturers on the impact that low rates of naval shipbuilding have had on their companies and the challenges confronting the ship manufacturing industrial base. The ship manufacturers that met with the Caucus included: Mr. Craig Hansen of BWXT/ Babcock and Wilcox in Mount Vernon, IN; Mr. Walter Herr of Fairbanks Morse Engine in Beloit, WI; Mr. Roy Arnold of IMECO, Inc. in Iron Mountain, MI; Mr. Michael Stobbart of Lister Chain and Forge, Inc. in Blaine, WA; and Mr. Terry Sterling of Nelson Stud Welding in Elyria, OH.

Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, Pascagoula, Miss., is being awarded a $191,119,037 cost-reimbursement type modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-2304) for DDG 1000 Zumwalt Class Destroyer long lead material, production planning labor, integrated logistics support, and systems integration engineering to support detail design and construction.Work will be performed in Pascagoula, Miss. (47 percent), Pittsburgh, Pa. (30 percent), Parsippany, N.J. (12 percent), Indianapolis, Ind. (5 percent), Erie, Pa. (4 percent), and Iron Mountain, Mich.
