New Study to Look at Irish Ports and Offshore Wind

Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG), a specialist engineering consultant, is undertaking an EU-wide study to determine potential funding models to improve Irish port infrastructure to the scale required to achieve the Government target of 7 GW of offshore wind in Irish waters by 2030. It follows GDG’s recent National Ports Study, conducted on behalf of Wind Energy Ireland, which found that only one out of 13 major ports on the island of Ireland is ready to be used for constructing offshore wind farms.

Belfast Opens New Cruise Terminal

Belfast Harbour, the maritime hub in Northern Ireland, said that it has opened the first dedicated cruise terminal on the island of Ireland to cater for Belfast’s growing popularity as a cruise destination.Christened as Cruise Belfast, it is a partnership between Belfast Harbour and Visit Belfast.Belfast Harbour has invested more than GBP500,000 on upgrading the quayside facility which now includes a Visitor Information Centre, part funded by Tourism NI and managed by Visit Belfast. Stena Line Confirms Newbuild Plans

Stena Line confirmed that the first of its new RoPax ferries currently under construction in China is planned to enter service on its Holyhead – Dublin route early 2020, with the following two vessels to be assigned to Liverpool-Belfast planned for spring of 2020 and early 2021.Last year Stena Line’s parent company, Stena, announced a newbuild contract for a new generation of RoPax ferry vessels, Stena E-Flexer, with planned deliveries during 2020 and 2021. Stena has ordered the construction of six new vessels from the AVIC Shipyard in China.

Captain Fined after Ship Grounds off Northern Ireland

The captain of a Dutch cargo ship that ran aground at Rathlin Island has been fined £1,000 ($1,300) at Armagh Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to failing to keep a proper look out. Ship’s captain Aleksandr Iakovtsov of the MV Ruyter pleaded guilty to charges brought by the U.K. Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). He was charged under the Merchant Shipping Distress Signals and Prevention of Collision Regulations 1996 and also of failing to safely navigate his ship and causing serious damage to the ship (in breach of section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995).

Twitter Buoy Informs Ocean Race Sailors

Sailing enthusiasts all over the world are being kept abreast of conditions in Galway Bay ahead of the grand finale of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) thanks to the deployment of a unique eight metre high buoy in the sea off Mutton Island reports Ireland's 'The Connacht Sentinel'. The Galway Buoy is providing up to date information on the progress of the 39,000 mile VOR ahead of the last leg into Galway as well as wind and sea conditions in the vicinity of the finishing line before the conclusion of the nine month race on July 3. Tweets will be provided from the buoy about the progress of the eight boats between the start of the final leg in Lorient on July 1 and the conclusion of the race next to an Irish naval vessel two days later.
