The City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) cut steel to officially begin the construction of the first of three new 320’ Staten Island Ollis Class Ferries. The steel cutting ceremony held August 29, 2017 took place in Eastern’s steel processing and pre-fabrication building at its Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. Attending the ceremony from Staten Island Ferry Division was John Collins, Director of Ferry Engineering and Bill Tomalonis, Vessel Construction Manager SIF Division.

For as long as there has been a need to transport cargo there has been a maritime industry. Plans are in motion to procure another newly built ferry for New York City. A city-run organization in charge of running New York’s Governors Island said it is seeking bids for the design and construction of a new passenger-only ferry for its service between the island and Manhattan. Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten, Inc. has provided technical requirements for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel, to be operated by The Trust for Governors Island.

New York’s Circle Line Sightseeing has the first of three new steel mono-hulled sightseeing boats under construction at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding of Somerset, Massachusetts. The first of the 165 x 36-ft. vessels will be delivered in April 2008 with the second to follow in August and the final boat in March 2009. A pair of Cummins KTA38M1 main engines developing 1100 hp at 1800 RPM will power the first vessel. The engines will be linked to ZF W3350 gears with 4.497:1 ratios.

The Manitowoc Company, Inc., the leading provider of shipbuilding and ship-repair services for the U.S. Great Lakes maritime industry, announced today that the City of New York recently awarded its Manitowoc Marine Group contracts to build three Kennedy-class ferries. The contracts represent over $124 million of business which will extend into 2004. In addition, Manitowoc Marine Group has also received a contract from Great Lakes Dredge & Dock to build a 7,100-cubic-yard dump scow for this worldwide dredging contractor. The new Kennedy-class ferries will be 310 feet long, 70 feet wide, and are capable of transporting 4,400 passengers and 30 vehicles.

Manitowac was awarded a U.S. Coast Guard contract valued at more than $80 million. In one of the most hotly contested newbuild contracts of the year, Manitowoc Company, Inc. came out on top when it was awarded a contract by the City of New York to build three Kennedy-class ferries.
