Steel Cut for New Staten Island Ferry

The City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) Staten Island Ferry Division and Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. (ESG) cut steel to officially begin the construction of the first of three new 320’ Staten Island Ollis Class Ferries. The steel cutting ceremony held August 29, 2017 took place in Eastern’s steel processing and pre-fabrication building at its Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla. Attending the ceremony from Staten Island Ferry Division was John Collins, Director of Ferry Engineering and Bill Tomalonis, Vessel Construction Manager SIF Division.

For as long as there has been a need to transport cargo there has been a maritime industry. Throughout that history both owners and mariners have worked to devise ways of saving costs, making faster transits, and carrying more cargo. In 1819 the Steam Ship Savannah made maritime history by being the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, sounding eight bells for the traditional cargo carrying tall ship. Another New Ferry for NYC

Plans are in motion to procure another newly built ferry for New York City. A city-run organization in charge of running New York’s Governors Island said it is seeking bids for the design and construction of a new passenger-only ferry for its service between the island and Manhattan. Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Glosten, Inc. has provided technical requirements for the design, construction and delivery of the vessel, to be operated by The Trust for Governors Island.

One of the most notable acts of valor was the maritime evacuation of Lower Manhattan – the largest water evacuation in American history – in which 500,000 people were transported to safety by hundreds of vessels which answered a call from the U.S.

EBDG to Design New Class of Staten Island Ferries

Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG), a naval architecture and marine engineering firm with offices in Seattle, New Orleans and Ketchikan, Ala., has been selected by the New York Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to design a new class of ferries that will operate between the boroughs of Staten Island and Manhattan. The project scope consists of a complete design package, including contract drawings, specifications and other documents for vessels to replace the existing Barberi and Kennedy Class ferries. Also included in the scope are modifications to the existing Molinari Class ferries to retrofit a new propulsion system, something the city says is necessary to establish consistency between the new ferries and those that will remain in the fleet. Circle Line Orders Three

New York’s Circle Line Sightseeing has the first of three new steel mono-hulled sightseeing boats under construction at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding of Somerset, Massachusetts. The first of the 165 x 36-ft. vessels will be delivered in April 2008 with the second to follow in August and the final boat in March 2009. A pair of Cummins KTA38M1 main engines developing 1100 hp at 1800 RPM will power the first vessel. The engines will be linked to ZF W3350 gears with 4.497:1 ratios.

Manitowoc Marine Group Awarded Contracts

The Manitowoc Company, Inc., the leading provider of shipbuilding and ship-repair services for the U.S. Great Lakes maritime industry, announced today that the City of New York recently awarded its Manitowoc Marine Group contracts to build three Kennedy-class ferries. The contracts represent over $124 million of business which will extend into 2004. In addition, Manitowoc Marine Group has also received a contract from Great Lakes Dredge & Dock to build a 7,100-cubic-yard dump scow for this worldwide dredging contractor. The new Kennedy-class ferries will be 310 feet long, 70 feet wide, and are capable of transporting 4,400 passengers and 30 vehicles.

Manitowoc Awarded Contract

Manitowac was awarded a U.S. Coast Guard contract valued at more than $80 million. The Manitowoc Company, Inc. the leading provider of shipbuilding and ship-repair services for the U.S. Great Lakes maritime industry, announced that the United States Coast Guard has awarded Manitowoc Marine Group an $82.4-million contract to build a new Great Lakes ice breaker. The new vessel, which is currently unnamed, will be approximately 240 feet long, 60 feet wide, and will displace 3,500 long tons. homeport of Cheboygan, Michigan. said Terry D. Growcock, Manitowoc's president and chief executive officer. "The contract also enhances our status as the leading shipbuilder on the U.S. the ice breaker at Marinette Marine under a contract that will span more than three years.

This 310-ft. ferry is one of three to be built as part of a $120-million contract that was awarded to Manitowoc in 2001. The launch ceremony featured Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of New York, and Guy V. Molinari as the keynote speakers, with the Honorable Susan Molinari, former U.S. Congresswoman from New York and daughter of the ship's namesake, as the sponsor, who performed the traditional christening ceremony. Much of the copy on our pages is spent examining the technical and financial sides of our business — the vessels, systems and equipment, as well as the companies and individual that design, build and operate them. The human side ... the people and personalities that make the maritime industry what it is and, personally, has kept me coming back for more for the last decade, often finishes a distant third. Some events of the last few months — the death of Chris Cordeau (29) from Portland Tugboat; the collision of the Lee III and Zim Mexico III at the mouth of the Mississippi, resulting in the sinking of the OSV Lee III and the apparent death of five crew members, including the confirmed deaths of Baldemar Villarreal, Jr.

Marinette Marine Corporation, a subsidiary of The Manitowoc Company, Inc. launched the ferry Sen. John J. Marchi for New York City's Department of Transportation on Saturday, May 8. This 310-ft. ferry is the second of three Staten Island Ferries to be built as part of a $120-million contract that was awarded to Manitowoc in 2001. The launch ceremony featured Michael R. Manitowoc Tapped For $120M NYC Ferry Project

In one of the most hotly contested newbuild contracts of the year, Manitowoc Company, Inc. came out on top when it was awarded a contract by the City of New York to build three Kennedy-class ferries. The new Kennedy-class ferries will measure 310 x 70 ft., and are capable of transporting 4,400 passengers and 30 vehicles. The new ferries are scheduled replace three 1965-built ferries, and will provide year-round transportation service between Staten Island and Manhattan. The ferries will feature twin pilot houses plus state-of-the-art navigation and propulsion systems. "This contract is an excellent example of the solid growth opportunities afforded us by our strategic acquisition program in general, and more specifically, last year's acquisition of Marinette Marine," said Terry D.
