A general strike in Greece has been extended by another 48 hours and is affecting the routes of domestic and local ferries and commercial vessels calling at Piraeus, Aspropyrgos, Eleusis, Pachi and Megara ports for cargo discharging, announced Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS). The continuation of the strike action by the Seamen’s Union involves another 48-hour stoppage and began at 6 a.m. on January 29 (the first 48-hour strike action commenced at 6 a.m. on January 27). The Towage and Salvage Crew Union of Piraeus also staged a four-hour stoppage today from 6 to 10 a.m. and will repeat this tomorrow, January 30. During the stoppage period, vessels will not be able to berth, shift or sail from the affected ports.

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) is advising of a further 24 hour general strike in Greece on December 3 which is expected to affect vessel movements at many Greek ports and terminals. The public and private sector strike action is scheduled to start at 06:00 local time on December 3 and end at 06:00 on December 4. During the stoppage period, berthing, shifting and sailing operations may be delayed, with local ferries, tug boats, pilots and stevedores at all ports likely to be affected, as well as oil installations at Eleusis–Aspropyrgos and Thessaloniki. ISS Greece said it is working with its clients to minimize delays and will keep them updated.

An update on Greece’s port operations and local conditions was issued today by maritime services provider Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS). According to ISS, no operational delays have been reported in Piraeus container terminal operations since capital controls were enforced. The only vessel supply operation presently affected is delivery of Cash to Master for any vessel type. No Cruise issues or changes of itinerary have been reported because of capital controls. No incidents have occurred to date affecting port safety and/or security, ISS reports.

ISS Greece is advising that sailors associated with Greece’s Panhellenic Seamen's Union (PNO) are likely to strike 3rd April 2013. The strike is set to commence at 06:00 local time, 3, April and last until 06:00 on 04 April. The PNO has warned that the labour action is likely to be the first in a series of strikes in the coming weeks. Merchant shipping and international and inter-island ferry transport services are therefore likely to be affected in a number of areas. It is understood that the Piraeus towage company and their seamen (tug boats crew) will participate in the strike, which is expected to affect vessels port call operations at Piraeus, Aspropyrgos, Eleusis and Pachi during the period of the strike. ISS Greece has confirmed that the strike disruption means that there will be no assistance by tug boat crews with berthing and sailing movements for vessels calling at the ports of Piraeus, Aspropyrgos, Eleusis and Lavrion and pilots have also confirmed they will be joining the strike from 12.00 until 16.00 on 31st January. Vessel movements at Thessaloniki will not be affected as the local towage company will not be joining the strike. ISS Greece will continue to monitor developments on behalf of ship owners and operators and will keep customers updated.

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS) appointed by Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) to support a key marine seismic survey project in Greece. Under the three month research project, ISS Greece will provide marine services to the survey vessel ‘Nordic Explorer’ and two smaller support vessels as they work along the western Greek coast from Patras Port. The national project has been commissioned by the Greek government to try and seek out important new reserves of natural gas. George Andreakos (ISS Greece and Mednet Operations Manager) is leading the operational team to assist the project in close co-operation with the ISS Offshore Solutions team, headed by Dan Whysall. This is the third contract awarded by PGS to ISS Greece and follows previous surveys in Cyprus.
