A new documentary produced by a consortium of public broadcasters in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway has revealed what appears to be a profound threat to maritime and undersea energy and data infrastructure in the North Sea and the Baltic region. The Shadow War includes footage of a Russian research vessel called Admiral Vladimirsky allegedly collecting data on windfarms, gas pipelines, power and internet cables.The film, which has been widely reported in the UK press this week, asserts that Russia is systematically mapping the vulnerabilities of maritime infrastructure in the North Sea.

BIMCO's longtime chief shipping analyst Peter Sand is departing the trade organization to take up the chief analyst role at ocean and air freight rate benchmarking, market analytics platform and container shipping index Xeneta, the Olso-based company announced on Wednesday.Sand joins Xeneta after over a decade at BIMCO, where he was responsible for analyzing commercial markets based on the global economic situation and its influence on trade. Prior to BIMCO, he worked with Danish shipping company D/S NORDEN as a senior analyst.

The stranding of the MV Wakashio is one of the biggest environmental disasters in the history of the western Indian Ocean. While the full scale of the disaster is not yet known, the 1,000 tons of oil and diesel that leaked close to one of the greatest marine treasures of Mauritius threatens to destroy this precious habitat. At the time of writing at least 100 people have lost their lives and a further 4,000 have been wounded following an explosion in the Port of Beirut. While the actual cause remains uncertain, the tragedy calls to attention the tremendous consequences of a lack of port security.The explosion, on August 4, at around 6 p.m. local time, appears to have been fueled by 2,750 tons of the highly reactive chemical ammonium nitrate. On 1 January 2019, Jens Valdemar Krenchel will take up the position as Head of EU Representation for Danish Shipping at the  the EU office in Brussels, where Danish Shipping has been represented since 1989.At the same time, he will join the management team of Danish Shipping as Head of the organisation's EU Representation, which employs a team of four. Semi-submersible accommodation vessels owner and operator Prosafe has made several changes to its management team. Jesper Kragh Andresen was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Stig H. Christiansen as Deputy CEO and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Prosafe Management AS. Georgina Georgiou will continue as General Manager of the parent company Prosafe SE. From 2012 and until recently, Andresen was CEO in Axis Offshore. Prior to this he was President of Lauritzen Offshore and Managing Director of J. Lauritzen Singapore.

A paper published this week in Environmental Research Letters by NOC scientist Dr. Svetlana Jevrejeva provides new information about the probability of a sea-level rise reaching of 180cm by 2100. In this study Dr. Jevrejeva and colleagues explore the range of possible sea level rise by 2100 and add new data to the estimates currently available. Previously an upper limit, or ‘worst case scenario’, has not been possible to calculate, but this new study now looks beyond the previous data available to provide a more complete picture.

For 150 million people living in coastal areas around the world, rising sea level will become a genuine threat, according to a new international study which found evidence the sea level has been rising over the past 200 years – and continues to rise. Of particular interest, say the organisers, was the official premiere of the new StowMan[s] software which the believe opens up a new dimension in stowage planning, by significantly speeding the process up and efficiently optimizing it at the same time.

Efficiency and safety were the key topics at the third MACS3 User Conference. Taking part were 35 representatives of 25 companies, from nine different countries. Of particular interest to them was a highlight: the official premiere of the new StowMan software. StowMan opens up a new dimension in stowage planning, by significantly speeding it up and efficiently optimizing it at the same time. It was developed in cooperation with Professor Rune Møller Jensen of the IT University of Copenhagen. The second highlight was the opening of the Fleet Operation Center (FOC), which serves to increase efficiency and prevent accidents. Furthermore, INTERSCHALT offered participants a look at brand-new features of the MACS3 loading computer, such as the improved TROP software module for trim optimization.
