Inmarsat is giving its full backing to a new joint working group formed by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) to develop a coordinated position on cybercrime and its prevention. The maritime industry satellite service provider said that stakeholder unity was critical in meeting the unpredictability of the cyber security threat to shipping. IACS sees the JWG approach as key to driving pan-industry technical or policy initiatives forward where the issue identified affects not only IACS Members but other parts of the industry. Inmarsat is a founding member of the group, which is being led by George Reilly of ABS and has been charged with evaluating measures to develop standardized industry practices to oppose maritime cyber threats from any direction.

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has appointed three new members to its Management Board and one new member to the IBIA in Africa Board. The appointments were announced at the Association’s 23th annual dinner, which was held on February 8 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) noted an improvement in bunker quality from across the marine fuels supply chain thanks in part to a campaign launched by the association. Addressing an audience of more than 1,000 marine fuel buyers, suppliers and traders at the association’s annual dinner in London last night, IBIA Chairman Jens Maul Jorgensen said that the early results for 2015 show that there has been a marked improvement in bunker fuel quality with 8% of samples found to be off-spec compared with 10% in 2014. Padfield, whose last assignment for the Navy was commanding officer, Assault Craft Unit Five, began his new position on Monday. Northrop Grumman Corporation recently donated $3 million worth of training software to the U.S. Naval Academy, and also presented the Elmer A. Sperry Junior Navigator of the Year Award to Midshipman First Class Tyler Ledoux. The company donated 100 licenses of its Voyage Management System (VMS) software to the U. S. Naval Academy Foundation for midshipmen training use at the Naval Academy. The VMS software incorporates the Electronic Chart Display and Information System-Navy (ECDIS-N) which was selected by the navigator of the Navy and is now a fleet standard.

BAE Systems joined with Mid Ocean Tanker Company (MOTC), Mid Ocean Marine and Alterna Captial Partners earlier this year to commission the American Phoenix, a U.S. Flag/Jones Act-qualified product-chemical tanker. Measuring 616 x 105 ft. with a laden draft of 36 ft. and a cargo capacity of 49,000 dwt, American Phoenix is the largest vessel ever built and launched in the State of Alabama. BAE Systems was contracted to complete construction of the American Phoenix and prepare it for use. The vessel is owned by MOTC, a joint venture between Mid Ocean Marine and private equity firm Alterna Capital Partners. The vessel will conduct trade initially in the Gulf of Mexico.

U.S. Naval Academy Foundation receives plus US$1-million In voyage management software from Northrop Grumman's Maritime Systems Business Unit. Northrop Grumman is donating the newest version of its VMS, which incorporates the Electronic Chart Display Information System-Navy (ECDIS-N) technology that has been selected by the Navigator of the Navy and is now the fleet standard. This version is currently installed, or under contract and scheduled for installation, on more than 200 U.S. Navy ships and submarines. Jeff Holloway, site director of Northrop Grumman Maritime Systems in Charlottesville, as well as a retired career naval officer, former Naval Academy instructor and graduate of the class of 1977, spearheaded the gift-in-kind donation.

Huntington Ingalls Industries is to participate in Doha's International Maritime Defense Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX) highlighting the new patrol frigate derivative of the company's proven U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter. The patrol frigate could be built at the company's Ingalls Shipbuilding facility in Pascagoula, Mississippi. "The Ingalls patrol frigate design has already proven its seaworthiness in U.S. Coast Guard service," said Dan Holloway, HII's corporate vice president for customer relations. "Our analysis has shown there are foreign navies with requirements for patrol frigate capabilities and that this particular design will address naval multi-mission needs.

Sperry Junior Navigator of the Year Award to Ensign Jeffrey Iiams, USNA Class of 2010, in honor of the midshipman who demonstrated outstanding navigation skills and knowledge during the four years of professional development at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The Elmer A. Sperry Junior Navigator of the Year Award was established by the company to honor Elmer A. Sperry, founder of Sperry Marine (now part of Northrop Grumman) in 1910.

Naval Reserve Officer Training Candidate (NROTC) students at college campuses in San Diego have become the first to use an advanced navigation training package supplied by Northrop Grumman Corporation’s (NYSE: NOC) Sperry Marine business unit. The computerized learning DVDs contain 16 interactive courseware (ICW) training lessons on the use and operation of Sperry Marine’s Voyage Management System (VMS) ship navigation software. They are being used in the navigation training curriculum for NROTC students at the University of San Diego and other greater San Diego college campuses. “The eLearning courseware will give the NROTC students an opportunity to become familiar with the standard electronic navigation system used throughout the U.S. Navy surface and submarine fleets.
