Zero-Emission Adriatic Ship Project Underway

The Zero Emission Adriatic Ship (ZEAS) project has commenced, with 13 partners from various European Countries. The overall project grant from EU Horizon is over EUR 13.5 million, where over EUR 2.3 million is reserved to TECO 2030’s deliverable of 1.2MW of fuel cells for full vessel propulsion.The project focuses on a full-scale demonstration of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered system on a ship, tailored for operation in the Adriatic Sea's delicate marine ecosystem. Croatian Ferry Refit for Operations on New Route

Sometimes, a change in a vessel's operational profile requires considerable modernization or retrofitting of its propulsion system in order for the vessel to remain fit for purpose. And in some cases, newly required thruster performance features can be achieved with the help of modifications that preserve most of the existing units.Earlier this year, the Croatian ferry Krk operated by the national Jadrolinija shipping company, was retrofitted to cater for a new route with stronger winds and currents.

Study Reveals Ferry Industry’s Huge Economic Impact

A study commissioned by trade association Interferry has revealed startling statistics on the far-reaching extent of the global ferry industry’s value to the world economy.Research into the latest pre-Covid full-year figures found that, in 2019, ferries carried 4.27 billion passengers – on a par with aviation – and 373 million vehicles across a worldwide fleet of 15,400 vessels. ACO Marine Completes Work for Jadrolinija

ACO Marine said it has completed the commissioning of wastewater treatment units aboard the ropax sisters Sveti Krševan, Supertar and Cres operated by Croatian owner Jadrolinija.The three 87.6m vessels were each retrofitted with a Clarimar MF-2 biological-type sewage treatment plant at the Dalmont shipyard in Kraljevica, Croatia, the oldest continuously operating shipyard in the world, with a history dating back to 1729.Italy’s La Fornitrice, ACO Marine’s engineering partner in the region, completed the commissioning of the system aboard Cres, the final ship in the series, in May.

Interferry Names New Chairman and Board Members

Interferry, the trade association representing the worldwide ferry industry, has announced that the new chairman of its board of directors is John Steen-Mikkelsen, CEO of Danish ferry operator Danske Faerger.Steen-Mikkelsen was elected together with three new board members at the annual general meeting held last week in Cancun, Mexico, during the association’s 43rd annual conference.The Interferry board is drawn from all types of large and small ferry operations - including ro-pax, ro-ro, cruise ferries, fast ferries and passenger-only ferries - as well as industry suppliers.

Interferry: Diverse Operations Common Successes

In October the world’s ferry operators gathered in Split Croatia for the Forty Second Annual Interferry Conference. The 470 or so delegates represented 210 operators and support companies from 27 countries. A trade show included firms from around the world including shipbuilders, naval architects, equipment suppliers, training and others of the diverse group that make up the ferry industry. In a panel on Mediterranean Ferries, Philippe Holthof, of the Belgian-based Shipax explained the huge size and complexity of the fleet.

Interferry Conference Reviews Issues with Financial Impact

The challenges and opportunities posed by alternative fuels, safety management and social media dominated Interferry’s 42nd annual conference in Split, Croatia, where a record 370 delegates shared insights on ship technologies, safety issues including cyber security and the customer experience. Attendance at last week’s conference represented 210 ferry operators and suppliers from 27 countries. Mediterranean ferry operators voiced their concerns on meeting the 0.5 percent sulphur emissions cap due in 2020. Minoan Lines managing director Antonios Maniadakis complained that using low sulphur fuel would increase costs by €2 million per year.

Jadrolinija Ferries Collide in Zadar

Two Jadrolinija ferries collided last night at port of GaĹľenica but none of the passengers or crew members was injured in the collision and there was no pollution of the sea. According to a report in Index, the ships did not suffer any significant damage and that the collision was due to a technical problem that arose on 'Sis'. The ferry 'Sis' broke down and continued to move towards 'Juraj Dalmtinac' which was moored at the port. Both vessels collided and broke its outer hull. Juraj Dalmtinac has suffered minor damage in the outer hull while Sis did not suffer any structural damage. The port officials informed that Sis will remain at the port until the technical problems are resolved. Sis is a ferry with capacity of 700 passengers and 70 cars.

New Plan Pledges Ferry Safety Lead

Interferry has unveiled a strategic plan promising to put safety issues at the heart of its work as the voice of the worldwide ferry industry. The pledge came at the global trade association’s 41st annual conference in Manila – a venue chosen to spotlight the challenges of domestic ferry safety in developing nations. According to Interferry, the plan signals its overriding ambition to help lift ferry safety in all parts of the world to the very high standard already in place in North America and Europe, where casualties in recent decades have been extremely rare.

Croatia’s Jadrolinija to Buy New Passenger Ship

The Croatian ferry operator has started implementing its development strategy, and one of the main elements of the strategy is further development of the fleet. RMDC said the ship will carry 2,000 passengers and 206 cars, or 85 cars and 20 trucks. Passenger spaces located on two decks will include a restaurant, bars, buffet, childrens’ playroom and designated space for passengers on the open deck. “We and Croatian islands need such a ship”, said Klanac. A statement said: “the ferry will be equipped with one pair of foldable fin stabilisers that ensure the comfort of passengers. Transport of passengers between decks will take place using elevators and escalators. The ship will have two decks designed to carry cars.

For Ferries, Commercial Light at End of Regulatory Tunnel

A review of the ferry industry’s latest challenges and opportunities attracted a record 340 delegates to Vancouver last week for the 39th annual Interferry conference. The global trade association event exposed a string of concerns – notably over punitive safety and environmental regulations – but also highlighted the financial potential of new routes, onboard shopping incentives and the use of LNG fuel. Alongside sessions on the future of the industry, Canada-based CEO Len Roueche outlined a vision for maintaining Interferry’s influential lobbying role among politicians and regulators.

Croatia Shipyard Uljanik Launches Ferry, Tank Barges

The 100m long RoRo ferry was launched for the Croatian national shipping company Jadrolinija as the second of a series of 4 such vessels, and the two river barges for Sweden's Wisby Tankers AB. The ferries are designed for two-way direct sailing for the transportation of 600 passengers in summer months or 320 passengers in the winter period in the closed lounge. The ferries will also be able to transport 145 standard vehicles or 16 trailers of 40 tonnes each. All the vessels from the series will be 99.8 m long…
