Maersk Steers Annual Shipping Forecast Lower

Maersk restates annual guidance after energy deal; lowers forecast for its key container business. A.P. Moller-Maersk , the world's largest container shipping group, cut the profit forecast for its core business on Tuesday after a costly cyber attack and a weaker than expected third quarter. Maersk, which agreed to sell its oil and gas business to Total in a $7.5 billion deal this year, has to prove to investors that the firm's strategy to focus on transport and logistics is the right one even with oil prices rising again. Expectations for the container shipping business had been high after Chief Executive Soren Skou said in August that fundamentals were "at their best since 2010".

Maersk: Shipping Recovery Coming

Maersk Line posts loss, but company sees improvement. A.P. Moller-Maersk beat first-quarter net profit forecasts on Thursday, boosted by the energy business it plans to spin off, but also reported signs of improvement at its long-suffering container shipping business. Maersk has been hit by the double blow of low oil prices at its energy arm and sliding prices in its shipping business due to lacklustre global trade and industry overcapacity.

Will Maersk Line acquire HMM

There are rumours among observers that the  market leader Maersk Line is planning to acquire South Korea’s shipping major Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM). Neither company has commented on the matter. Both companies were tight-lipped today on merger talk. According to a Reuters report, Maersk itself hasn't made a major acquisition for more than a decade but says it might be open to "the right opportunity", although doubters believe such deals risk accumulating ships without securing enough customers. Jakob Stausholm, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at Maersk Line, said: "If the right opportunity is there we will look into it. If you look at the history of Maersk Line, we have achieved our leadership position by combination of organic growth and acquisitions.
