HMAS Glenelg Saves Sea Turtles

A quiet watch was the expectation for Leading Seaman Boatswains Mate James Cole in patrol boat HMAS Glenelg, but what he got was a lesson in ocean rescue for some entangled wildlife. “I stepped on to the bridge wing to get some fresh air and as I did, I noticed a net floating past,” he said. “As I looked closer, I saw that it was moving – there were three large sea turtles caught in the net,” Leading Seaman Cole said. A call was quickly made to Commanding Officer Lieutenant Commander Gary List, who decided to stop the boat and attempt to rescue the turtles. Glenelg launched one of her rigid hull inflatable boats with three sailors on board.

Sentinel Launches New Rudder Feedback Unit

Sentinel, a Beier Radio company, has designed and manufactured a new Rudder Feedback Unit (RFU) with many new features, including watertight components and connections that can be flooded in up to one meter of water for a 24-hour period and still provide accurate positioning for control systems, according to the manufacturer. The unit provides precise rudder position feedback via four noncontact inductive resonance encoders with IP67/IP69K degree of protection. EBDG New SNAME Fellows

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) announced that Douglas Wolff and James Cole have been named Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) Fellows. Doug Wolff joined EBDG in 1992 and serves as Vice President of Staff Operations. He has a BS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture and is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Washington, Oregon, North Carolina and Louisiana. For over 30 years, Doug has applied his engineering expertise to new vessel design, modifications and construction liaison. He is one of the firm's workboat experts, having extensive experience designing barges, ATBs, tugs, towboats and research vessels.
