British Columbia: Oil Spill Response shows Unprepared for More Tankers

British Columbian officials on Friday criticized the Canadian government's response to an oil spill in the waters around Vancouver, calling into question plans for new crude oil export pipelines in the Pacific Coast province. Nearly 3,000 liters of oil spilled after an anchored bulk carrier began leaking bunker fuel in English Bay, just west of Vancouver's downtown core, on Wednesday. Officials in the province said the coast guard responded but was slow to contain the slick, which spread towards beaches. They said the federal agency failed to notify the cities of Vancouver and West Vancouver until early Thursday, delaying public safety warnings by more than 12 hours. Canada’s Ferries Call for Infrastructure Investment

Industry Minister James Moore told CTV’s Question Period, yesterday, that Canadians will soon be seeing “very large-scale [infrastructure] announcements in every part of the country.”  Moore went on to say that these investments will benefit Canadians and increase productivity. Responsible for moving more than 55 million people, 19 million vehicles and millions of tons of goods annually, Canada’s ferries are a pivotal component of the nation’s infrastructure system, the Canadian Ferry Operators Association (CFOA) said, adding that further investments in ferry infrastructure would benefit productivity and Canadians. Three Sailors Rescued 350 Miles off Virginia

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said it coordinated the rescue of three people Thursday who were rescued by good Samaritans after their 41-foot sailboat, the Elusive, was beset by storms in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 350 miles east of Virginia Beach. Rescued are Larry Monesson, 60, Sean Monesoon, 40, and James Moore, 40. The father of James Moore contacted Coast Guard 5th District Command Center watchstanders at approximately 1 a.m. Thursday reporting he received a message via satellite phone from his son. The message stated the crew of the Elusive were experiencing high winds, 25-foot ocean swells and engine failure, but were attempting to repair the engine and not requesting assistance at the time.

Robert Allan Sign Tugboat Design Contracts in Netherlands

Robert Allan Ltd informs of the signing of two contracts during a recent Canadian Trade Mission to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The first signing covered the new ART 80-32, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and incorporating a hybrid propulsion system developed by Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA). The vessels are under construction at the Damen Shipyard in Poland and will enter the KOTUG fleet later this year. The second signing covered the recently awarded contract for three offshore Rotor tugs, destined for service at the Shell “Prelude” FLNG facility off the coast of Northern Western Australia.

Canadian Minister of Industry Visits KOTUG

Canadian Minister of Industry, the Honorable James Moore, visited the KOTUG’s Headquarters and sailed on board of the hybrid Rotortug RT Adriaan, the so-called E-KOTUG, in the Port of Rotterdam. The Prime Minister, Stephen Harper and the Minister of Industry, James Moore of the Government of Canada combined the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague with a working trip to the Port of Rotterdam. The visit to Rotterdam was focused on highlighting the trade and business relations between Canada and Europe.

Seaspan to Build Another 10 Noncombat Vessels

Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, joined by James Moore, Minister of Industry and Regional Minister for British Columbia, announced that Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards will build an additional 10 Noncombat vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard. The new ships, confirmed during Minister Finley’s visit to the Shipyards, increase Seaspan’s noncombat build package to 17 ships from the seven originally announced on October 19, 2011. These additional ships include five medium endurance multitasked vessels (MEMTVs) and five offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).

Canadian Government Supports Port Security R&D

The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport, on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Industry, has announced a $2-million repayable contribution for research and development activities on new maritime surveillance technology being performed by AXYS Technologies Inc. Minister Raitt made the announcement at the 55th Annual General Meeting of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities in Nanaimo, British Columbia. AXYS specializes in environmental monitoring systems for ports worldwide. This project will help the company develop applications that collect, analyze and display sensitive maritime data to enhance port and harbour security. Users will be able to monitor potential criminal threats in real time.

Seaspan Ferries to Install AMP at Swartz Bay Terminal

Seaspan Ferries Corporation's installation of shore electrical power (also known as AMP) to receive Government of Canada funding. Shore power is a highly effective way to reduce marine diesel air emissions by enabling ships to shut down their engines and connect to the local electrical grid in order to power their on-board systems while docked. "Our government is proud to invest in shore power at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal," said the Honourable James Moore, Minister Responsible for British Columbia. Once installed, shore power will decrease fuel consumption at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal by approximately 70,000 litres annually, representing a net savings of about $45,000 and an approximate 210,000 kg reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
