MOL Ups Offshore Wind Game with New Deals

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has signed a basic contract for the marine transport of offshore wind components with JFE Engineering Corporation, while also agreeing to build a new module carrier vessel with Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering.This will be first coastal module carrier in Japan to transport components for offshore wind turbine foundation components, according to MOL. Japan's JFE to Invest $363,3M in New Offshore Wind Monopile Plants

Japan's JFE Engineering Corporation is set to build a factory for the construction of monopile foundations and transition pieces for the offshore wind industry. The company also has plans to build jacket-type foundations in the future."The monopile foundation consists of a transition piece for connecting the monopile as a support and the wind turbine tower and is an extremely thick, large-diameter, long super-heavy object, which is difficult to manufacture at existing factories in Japan.

Coast Guard Approves Another BWTS Entry

Marine Safety Center issues 13th Ballast Water Management System Type Approval certificate.The Marine Safety Center issued the 13th U.S. Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System Type Approval Certificate to JFE Engineering Corporation after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.The treatment principle of the BallastAce BWMS consists of filtration with chemical injection during uptake and neutralization during discharge.

U.S. Coast Guard Receives Two More BWMS Applications

Coast Guard Marine Safety Center (MSC) has received its 11th and 12th applications for Ballast Water Management System type approval. The 11th application was received March 29, 2018, for the BallastAce system, manufactured by JFE Engineering Corporation. The 12th application was received March 30, 2018, for the GloEn-Patrol system, manufactured by Panasia Co., Ltd. MSC will review the applications for compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations in 46 CFR 162.060. Once it has been determined that each application meets the requirements, MSC will issue each company a type approval certificate. BWMS type approval applications and approval certificates are posted on MSC’s website.

Fednav Welcomes Innovative Ballast System at Indiana Port

Fednav Limited, the largest international bulk shipowner in Canada, welcomed to the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor, the Federal Caribou, one of seven new oceangoing lakers equipped with a ballast water treatment system-a first for the Great Lakes. This vessel protects the Lakes by treating its ballast water two times: by conducting an exchange in the North Atlantic, and through filtration and a chlorine disinfection treatment on the ship. The Federal Caribou is part of a series of 16 Handysize vessels, representing an investment by Fednav of more than $400 million and designed specifically for the Great Lakes. The company is the leading international operator in the Great Lakes, has one of the most modern fleets of bulk carriers in the world, the average age being under 10 years.

Fednav Orders 12 Ballast Water Treatment Systems

Fednav Limited, a Canadian operator of international ships in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system, announced an order for 12 ballast water treatment systems to equip its ships currently under construction. According to the shipper, this makes Fednav the first shipping company in Canada and the Great Lakes to announce the installation of ballast water treatment systems, well before the regulatory requirement. MOL Installs Ballast Water Treatment System on VLCC

In front of the VLCC Libra Trader, which recently had a new ballast water treatment system installed, representatives of the vessel’s management company, MOL Tankship Management (Asia) Pte Ltd., and the shipyard pose for a commemorative shot.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced completion of work to install a ballast water treatment system on the very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Libra Trader at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. On January 10, the company announced plans to install the system on a VLCC ahead of IMO installation compulsion. MOL is the first Japanese shipping company to install such a system for existing VLCC. Keppel Shipyard has timely delivered the vessel as committed and Libra Trader has already returned to service, and the ballast water treatment system will be tested and adjusted during operation.

Keppel Shipyard undertakes Singapore’s first Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit project for a VLCC. MOL Tankship Management (Asia) Pte Ltd (MOL) has awarded Keppel Shipyard with a landmark Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) retrofit project. This is the first BWTS retrofit for an existing Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) owned by a Japanese shipowner as well as the first such installation to be undertaken in Singapore. The BWTS to be installed is the JFE Ballast Ace system, which was selected by MOL and supplied by JFE Engineering Corporation.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) plan to install a ballast water treatment system on an in-service very large crude oil carrier (VLCC). This will be the first such onboard system installed by any Japanese shipowner on an existing VLCC. The company chose the JFE Ballast Ace system developed by JFE Engineering Corporation. The installation will take place while the vessel is docked from March through April. Ballast water discharged while loading/discharging cargo carries marine organisms around the world and can have a negative impact on marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
