Offshore: Seacor Raises the Bar Again

(Courtesy SEACOR Marine)

Long acknowledged as a firm to watch in U.S. crewboat and fast supply boat innovation, Seacor Marine will be attracting industry attention once again when its latest set of new boats begin delivery in 2014. While this new class of mono-hull boats have some big dimensions, the more noteworthy feature will be the size of its engines. With 10 vessels in three different classes all more than 200-feet long, this is the largest single order of fast supply boats of their size. Cummins QSK60-M engines, each delivering 2,700 hp, will power all vessels.

While this new class of mono-hull boats have some big dimensions, the more noteworthy feature will be the size of their engines. During the 2013 International Workboat Show in New Orleans, SEACOR’s Senior Project Manager Joe McCall took some time from his busy schedule to explain the boats.

Over 200 Feet, Over 10,000 HP: McCall Builds Bigger

The US and global offshore industry are in the habit of watching what SEACOR Marine is building as this will invariably predict future goals for the industry. Just as all the company’s crewboats carry the McCall name, they also carry the imprints of Joe McCall’s constant search for excellence and innovation. Son of the McCall Boat founder, Joe McCall is today the Project Manager at SEACOR Marine, a subsidiary of SEACOR Holdings. With a long history in the development of the mono-hulled aluminum crew boats, McCall has been experimenting with an exciting group of catamarans in recent years. Now, while continuing that project, the firm has announced the building of four mono-hulled fast supply boats. The boats set new standards in size as has been expected by industry observers.

SEACOR Marine Chooses MTU engines

SEACOR Marine has selected marine diesel engines from the Tognum brand MTU for its latest pair of fast supply vessels. The two vessels, SEACOR Lynx and SEACOR Leopard, will have an overall length of 190 feet and the capacity to carry up to 150 passengers. The vessels will also have the capacity to carry 150 tons of deck cargo and the ability to achieve speeds of 46 knots. Each vessel will be powered by four MTU 16V 4000 M73L engines rated at 3,860 bhp at 2,050 RPM. “The high-speed…

Gulf Firms Moving Cargo, Staff To Distant Rigs

SEACOR Cheetah,170-foot catamaran delivered by Gulf Craft in March 2008.

More than a decade ago, deepwater oil production in the Gulf of Mexico surpassed shallow water output for the first time ever. These days, rigs are found hundreds of miles offshore. Companies need to get equipment, employees, fuel and mud to those sites economically and usually on a tight schedule. Gulf marine companies are trying to meet those requirements by increasing the speed, size and energy efficiency of their vessels--though not necessarily all at once. Shane Guidry, Chief Executive Officer of Harvey Gulf International Marine…

Crewboats More Size, Weight And Power

In recent years the demand for large crew boats has continued to grow in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and has increased in some foreign markets, such as West Africa and Mexico. As their size has grown, so has the horsepower employed by these boats as customers demand greater load capacities and greater speed. "The trend in the 170-ft. (51.8 m) class of boats is to more power and faster speeds," affirms Swiftships' A.J. Blanchard, at the Morgan City yard, "These boats have gone up in power from four 1,000-hp engines to four 1,350-hp engines and bigger jets. We've had more interest from both U.S. and foreign customers in all jet boats since the increase in jet size has removed concerns over the loaded speeds," Blanchard adds.

Seacor Crewboats "Eliminators" Some Maintenance Costs

A crewboat is designed to transport supplies and personnel to offshore oil rigs. Loading the cargo must be quick and efficient. The last thing the crew wants to worry about is whether they have enough storage space for the engine lube oil filters. Furthermore, they don't need the hassle of disposing of used lube oil filters while at the docks. Seacor Smit Inc. found that Alfa Laval's Eliminator, an automatic self-cleaning filter system, helps to save time and money by eliminating the need for spin on cartridge filters, while also saving the crew the messy off-hour work. Seacor started using the Eliminator filter about four years ago on KV50 engines. Today, the company has 25 KV50 engines and five KV38 engines, all equipped with the Eliminator filter.

Ivan Rips Through Oil Patch

Hurricane Damage is Light Companies Report. With reports from AP, MMS and the Times Picayune. Packing 160 mile an hour winds, Hurricane Ivan stayed on a course that took the powerful storm through the heart of oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) before making landfall just east of Mobile, Ala. Initial reports from the Minerals Management Service, which oversees oil and gas production in the Gulf, indicate that damage is relatively light. Five mobile drilling rigs were adrift, but later found. Four fixed platforms had disappeared and presumably sunk and one was leaning. The MMS also reported three pipeline ruptures; one starting a fire that was contained.

Innovative Gear Controls for Jenny McCall

This January Gulf Craft of Patterson Louisiana will deliver the latest Seacor Marine crew boat the 180x32-foot Jenny McCall. Seacor Marine, with input from the father son team of Norman and Joe McCall, is noted for innovation in this highly competitive market segment. In keeping with this reputation the Jenny, powered by four 1800 HP Cummins KTA50 M2 main engines, will be equipped with the latest version of CSP Electronics controllable speed propulsion. The system allows the operator or the dynamic positioning system to achieve very precise shaft RPM against a constant engine RPM.

The engines on the Jenny turn into Twin Disc 6848 gears with a 2.93:1 reduction. With the engines idling at 750 rpm, this equates to the 52x53-in. props turning at about 250 rpm.

Seacor Repowers Vessels

Conrad's aluminum manager Todd Babin shows the "tweaked" props. The 300-ton travel lift at Conrad Industries Morgan City facility is a major attraction to Gulf Coast crew boat operators. Shallow waters in the area add to the heavy usage that crewboats receive contributes to a steady demand for quick haul outs and timely below waterline repairs. The yards large upland area is another attraction as it provides ample storage space for vessels undergoing major overhauls. This latter is the case with a series of six vessels recently acquired by Seacor Marine as part of their larger take-over of the Seabulk fleet. The six crewboats were each powered by four electronically controlled 1100 hp two-cycle engines turning at 2100 RPM that were getting only about 6000 hours before requiring a rebuild.
