Ebeling and Magee to Receive USS AOTOS Award

2002 International Golden Compass Award Recipients Announced

Seafarers’ House at Port Everglades, Fla., has announced the recipients of its 2002 International Golden Compass Award. Alan Kehrer, director of cruise marketing for Port Everglades, and the late Carl Thorsen of Eller & Company, will both be honored for their joint efforts and accomplishments to develop Port Everglades as one of the world’s leading cruise ports. A gala dinner to present the awards will be held in Fort Lauderdale on April 13, 2002. Kehrer began his professional career in 1963 with American Export Lines. In 1972, he joined the Business Development staff of Port Everglades. When Port Everglades began its business diversification plan in 1976, Kehrer emerged as its Manager of Passenger Development.

Hughes to Address MMA Alumni Foundation Dinner

Newly elected International Longshoremen's Association President Richard P. Hughes, Jr., will be the guest speaker at the United States Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation dinner in New York on Wednesday, September 5. The event is honoring the Major Liner Ports of the U.S., and will benefit the Academy's Regimental Band. Hughes, whose career has been dedicated to maritime labor, will be the keynote speaker at his first public-speaking engagement since being elected ILA President by the rank-and-file at the Annual meeting. He succeeds John Bowers. Hughes was elected president of the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO in July 2007. Richardson and Veitch to Receive Awards

The United Seamen’s Service (USS) 2006 Admiral of the Ocean Sea Awards will be presented to container shipping pioneer Paul F. Richardson, President of Paul F. Richardson Associates Inc., and Colin Veitch, President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line, which has commenced new American-flag passenger ship activity. The maritime industry honor will be awarded at a gala industry dinner and dance to be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City, on November 3, 2006. John Bowers, Chairman of the USS AOTOS Committee and President of the International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO, made the announcement on Maritime Day May 22, 2006. Richardson and Veitch led the field of nominees for the award, sought by USS from over 150 maritime management, labor and government officials.

ILA Members Attend USACE Hearing

Thousands of ILA members from the Port of New York and New Jersey attended a public hearing called by the USACE in Fort Monmouth, N.J. to demonstrate support for dredging projects which they say are needed to protect their jobs and the port's future. ILA Locals throughout the port say members are outraged the USACE has reopened the public comment period on a dredging permit which has already been issued to Brooklyn Marine Terminal. They say such an action jeopardizes the Port of New York and New Jersey to continue to take clean, uncontaminated dredged material to the ocean. They further state objections to this and other dredging projects runs counter to the 1996 agreement negotiated by Vice-President Al Gore with the maritime industry, labor and environmental groups.
