Fort Ripley: Multi-Missioned & Fully Capable
On a beautiful Autumn afternoon in Charleston, SC last month, MarineNews Editor Joseph Keefe had the good fortune to attend the christening on the nation’s first dual purpose, rapid response vessel and pilot launch. As the first vessel to be designed for offshore salvage and firefighting requirements, it was also notably the first commercial application of Volvo Penta’s IPS drive propulsion. The vessel also represents an interesting twist in the Charleston Branch Pilots’ business model. The pilot game is already a pretty good paying gig, but clearly, this group is thinking outside the box.

Fort Ripley, a new offshore emergency response craft now entering service in Charleston, S.C., is reported to be the first commercial vessel in North America to be powered by triple Volvo Penta IPS drives. Designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates, built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, and owned by Southeast Ocean Response Services Inc., the USCG-certificated 64-ft. aluminum boat, was commissioned today (October 7, 2014) in a ceremony in Charleston. Paul Hankins, Vice President for Salvage Operations at Donjon Marine Co., Inc., was elected President, succeeding Tim Beaver, Global Diving & Salvage, Inc., who served as President from 2011-2013. Jim Elliott, T&T Marine Salvage, Inc., was named Secretary/Treasurer. Paul Hankins has over 30 years’ experience in the marine industry after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1981 with a Bachelors of Science in Naval Architecture and from George Washington University in 1991 with a Master’s degree in Environmental Management.
Tanker Repair Completed
A tanker carrying 500,000 barrels of gasoline, the Bear G, is expected to start a journey back to the New York Harbor November 10 after completing repairs to a leaky hold in a Canadian port, the ship's manager said Tuesday. The vessel was denied access to the New York Harbor by the U.S. Coast Guard last week due to the internal leak until permanent repairs were made. The Bahamian flagged vessel, chartered by New York-based Novarco Ltd., arrived at the Statia Terminal, Point Tupper on Cape Breton Island in Canada November 6 to begin the repairs, according to Geneva-based Acomarit, the ship's manager. The ship is expected to occupy the berth at the terminal "until Friday 10 November at which time it is anticipated that Bear G will reload her cargo and proceed to" the New York Harbor…
