Carpenter First Woman President at SUNY Maritime

The State University of New York Board of Trustees on June 30 unanimously appointed Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter, USN, president of State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College. Admiral Carpenter is currently serving as the Commander of the Navy’s Warfare Development Command. The SUNY Board of Trustees voted on her appointment at a special meeting held on Thursday, June 30, 2011. Rear Admiral Carpenter is the first woman to serve as president of  SUNY Maritime College. Vice Admiral Ryan Assumes Presidency of SUNY Maritime College

Vice Admiral John R. Ryan assumed the presidency of the State University of New York Maritime College during a ceremony held aboard Empire State VI while it was docked in Dublin, Ireland. Formerly the Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, Vice Admiral Ryan is the College's 32nd president since its founding in 1874. The ceremony was attended by 600 Maritime Cadets aboard the ship as well as business and government leaders from Ireland. Vice Admiral Ryan flew to Dublin to greet the cadets and the Empire State VI as it sailed into port from its annual Summer Sea Term. 2005 Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner Sets Record

SUNY Maritime College hosted a record crowd of over 400 during the 2005 Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner, held in Vander Clute Hall on Friday, May 6 at Maritime’s scenic waterfront campus. A record $200,000 was also raised in support of cadet scholarships for incoming freshmen. MarAd, OSG Sign Agreement

The Maritime Administration and Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc, yesterday signed an agreement that will provide training opportunities for American maritime academy cadets on board OSG’s international vessels. The public-private partnership is the first formal agreement to make available on-board training billets in the international fleet for U.S. maritime academy cadets. Under the terms of the agreement, cadets from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and all six state maritime academies will be able to obtain work experience and training on board OSG vessels. Under international and national requirements, maritime academy cadets must serve at sea, for an average of 300 days, in order to obtain enough shipboard training for a merchant marine officer license.

House Hearing on Mariner Education, Work Force

The Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure conducted an oversight hearing on Mariner Education and Work Force. As explained in the Summary of Subject Matter, the focus of the hearing was growing shortage of mariners and the challenges facing the maritime work force. Subcommittee Chair Elijah Cummings (D-MD) expressed concern that the maritime industry is no longer attractive for new entrants. SUNY Maritime Announces Major Gifts

SUNY Maritime College announces three major gifts received as a result of two successful fundraising events – the 2006 Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner and the Class of 1956 Reunion Committee’s class gift campaign. Major gift donors are Clay Maitland, a former college foundation trustee and long time contributor; and Class of 1956 alumni, Captain Brian A. McAllister and Captain John F. Fox. With a record turnout of 550 guests on hand, the 2006 Admiral’s Scholarship Dinner capped the most successful year in Maritime’s fundraising history with over $410,000 raised through this year’s spring event.
